The dulcimer was no where near the quality I expected for the price. Even a guitar of this price range has a better finish and I'm sure that there is no where near the work involved in making a mountain dulcimer as there is in constructing a guitar. I purchased as a Christmas gift for my wife and unless she perceives it to be wonderful sounding and easy to play I will be returning it. If we do keep it, I will have to do an overall finish sanding and apply another coat of varnish since the finish as received was very rough to the touch. The tuners look to be rather low quality also, but my knowledge of typical dulcimer tuners is limited ... in respect to a guitar, I think I've seen better in a $100 instrument. An email to Morrell concerning quality has gone unanswered.
Final fit and finish of Dulcimer was not what I expected. Needed finish sanding and the action was quite high making fingering difficult. I called Morrell and they did send me a piece of the material (plastic) that they construct the nut and saddle from so that I could experiment and lower action without damaging the original unit. My wife plays the dulcimer and both she and the members of her dulcimer group like the mellow and moderately loud sound of it. The cherry finish looks better day by day.
The Morrell MTMD-6 Tennessee Mountain Dulcimer has a very sweet sound. It is just how I imagined it. And it is very easy to play. However, the finish is less than average. The finish is rough and has popped bubbles all over the surface from the (assumed polyurethane) sprayed-on finish. I will have to refinish at least the top surface with either an antique oil or tung oil. I did not want an instrument with a glossy finish, but I did not expect it to have such a rough surface, either.
I am returning this product for a refund. The workmanship and quality was not what I expected for the price. Imprecise intonation makes the dulcimer impossible to tune correctly.
