Comments about Lanikai SOT-8 8 String Tenor Ukulele:

fit and finish good and much better than the last Lanekai 8 string I returned a couple years ago. Sound from my six string tenor Lanekai actually better. Neck is thicker probably to accommodate 8 string pressure. Not sure I would buy it again. Lanekai needs to evaluate the quality of the Chinese made instruments. For the price not bad though-got it through stupid deal of the day. Interesting resonance patter with friend who plays mandolin-very nice.

Comments about Lanikai SOT-8 8 String Tenor Ukulele:

Why this instrument needs reviewing seems odd, as I believe it is a discontinued model. The action is quite high, much like a 1960s Stella guitar, so be prepared with files, sandpaper, and a lot of time and patience. That said, once adjusted, it is a beautiful instrument, lovely tone, full and rich. Consider it a kit and learning experience, perhaps better appreciated than if it had come with proper string height from the factory. Maybe the thought is that it is easier to lower the action, than to raise it. I had same experience with the Lanikai banjolele, it as well a gorgeous instrument.

Comments about Lanikai SOT-8 8 String Tenor Ukulele:

This is a delightful, beautiful uke!!! And LOUD!! (That was my first impression- smile!). Received it as a birthday gift and then my man (who has 50 years of guitar experience) bought a second one for himself!!! This is a bit harder on your finger pads which would be expected with twice as many strings as a standard uke. I have 6 other ukes but this one is my fave!!!

Comments about Lanikai SOT-8 8 String Tenor Ukulele:

First one was BAD! It had 4 major flaws...poor construction/workmanship and anyone of them would justify returning, not to mention the minor stuff, rough edges, glue residue, etc. The second one was better, I would even say "not bad for the price" especially since MF is blowing these out two bills cheaper than other online retailers, but ultimately, I returned it too. There was this sort of "honk" in mid range and some typical ukulele chord shapes sound kind of weird. That low G messes with the implied tonality of some chords, because it changes the root note, so when you're playing familiar tunes, they "just don't sound right".

That being said, I bought an A/E Lanikai and I'm playing it like you'd play a mandolin.
This uke is tuned Gg, cC, ee, aa, whereas a mandolin is typically tuned GG, DD, EE, AA. So, if you already know how to play mandolin, you know how to change strings and tune an instrument, this is a pretty cool tonal option.
