Although the Oscar Schmidt name no longer means old world European craftsmanship, this little ukulele is a very well-made, product of Indonesia. The all-mahogony construction provides a nice, rich tone. It plays well at all positions up and down the fretboard. Its ability to project is somewhat limited, however, the on-board electronics will allow you to play on stage with other amplified instruments. The provided strings should be changed and this does enhance the tonal quality of the instrument. When comparing sound quality you will find that the OU2E is a vast improvement over the cheap, lower-end junk that is so prolific. It isn't a vintage Martin and it doesn't sound like one. It is an excellent "next" ukulele for those who've decided to take the instrument one step closer to actually playing music. It isn't made of Koa wood, and it doesn't sound like it. It is a very nice ukulele that you will not be ashamed of in any setting. The geared tuners are a nice touch and they do stay in tune. It is quite plain in appearance. It is without binding, has dot fret markers, and the most minimal of soundhole adornments. The wood is quite pretty and the instrument will make you smile. The on-board electronics work very well and are a plus in this price range. If you're reading this, I know you're interested. I strongly recommend that you give this little gem a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Well. I had a uke a few years ago that literally exploded, and have wanted another since. Finally decided to take the plunge with one of these. Money was an issue, so it seemed like the best plan to get one of these and be able to plug in with my band...thought it'd be fun. I was wrong. This uke doesn't really succeed as an acoustic instrument, nor as an electric one. For starters, this is NOT a "soprano" uke. The scale length is approximately that of a "concert" uke. Sure, they're tuned the same, but they don't sound the same. The scale length is also about 3/16" too short for proper intonation. MOving the bridge is not something I want to pay a luthier to do, but I may have to. Accurate intonation is IMPOSSIBLE. I refuse to listen to people who say that asking for accurate intonation on a uke is a fool's errand. I owned a cheapo uke that was in tune with itself up to the 12th fret, and this one, at approximately 3 times the cost of that one, is acceptably in tune with itself MAYBE up to the 5th fret. Next, the "pickup" is, shall we say, "rough." It must be some sort of unit that attaches to the underside of the soundboard, since there is nothing under the saddle. The electronics take up MOST of the interior of the instrument, and severely impede the acoustic sound. The neck is nicely bound, I'll say that.Otherwise, you get pretty much what you pay for. I guess I shouldn't have expected more.

Great for the price

By Scott Bierko

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

Get it. You won't be sorry!
I purchased one of these after enjoying the Oscar Schmidt Soprano. I needed something with a built-in pickup for a live show and this one peaked my interest due to the good reviews and, of course, the price. I am not disappointed. The uke sounds fine plugged-in, much better than the Applause uke that recently stopped working and is probably not worth fixing. It's a bigger sound than the Soprano. I really like that the battery is easy to load. My only two criticisms (and they're minor) is the sound of the GHS strings. I will definitely change these. Second, the 1/4" input is very snug. It actually takes a bit of pressure to get the cord locked in place. The good thing is that it won't come out easily during a gig!
I have never played really expensive ukes, so I have nothing to compare it with. But why tempt myself? The quality on this works for my purposes.
There is no comparison to anyting else that I've found in this price range.

Nice sound w Pickup

By Carlos Reoyo

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

I got mine about 2 years ago. It is and was my 1st uke. It seems that the battery changing problem was in older models. Now is very easy to replace the batteries. I used mine w a Line 6 amp and a Roland JC90 and sounds great. Having a pickup really make a difference.

Its almost perfect

By Grant

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

First off I got a lankai peice of junk so I sent that back and got this. This ukulele I think is great for any beginner who wants to learn how to play. It came to me in perfect condition. It is really fun to learn on, the only problem is that its a real war to replace the battery. That is the only problem for me. Solution for that is to not play on an amp all the time unless you need to. Other than that I would recomend this instrument to any beginner who is looking to step up in ukuleles.

Set-up hard; Plays well.

By Grrlie

from Northern Virginia

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

This was my first ukulele and for the price I was expecting it to be kind of poor quality.Actually the quality is great! I've had no problems with it, (except the battery, which I'll get to later)It came well-packaged and although I had to replace the factory strings with Martins (a good choice anyway, the sound was MUCH improved) I found the intonation to be pretty good. It sounds great both acoustically and electrically. This uke is a lot of fun.My only problem was getting the battery in the ukulele. I installed it with all the strings off and still had trouble accessing the inside of the ukulele. It took me about half an hour to get it in, but then I think the sound that results is worth the trouble.Excellent beginner uke!

It falls apart

By Honest Store Owner

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

I bought two for my music store. Out of the I found serious problem with a glued joint coming apart. The bridge fell off two days later. Find another brand that does not fall apart unless you LIKE to glue things back together.

Good sound, annoying to setup.

By Sepp

from Park Ridge, IL

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

When I first got it, it was "broken" like a lot of people are saying in their reviews. By "broken," I'm pretty sure most people mean that the battery casing was flopping around inside the uke. That's not broken, it's just dissasembled, but I'll get to that later. The OU2E Soprano Ukulele has a really nice sound, both plugged and unplugged. In my experience on my weak crate practice amp, this thing is LOUD. I have to turn down the settings that I use with my guitar. Adding pedals to the mix makes this uke a lot of fun to play with.It stays in tune for extended periods of time, unlike most ukes that I play. I've only actively played up the 14th fret, but even then there is -no- fret buzz. I get compliments on the sound anytime I play around musicians. The downside of the instrument is the aforementioned battery casing. In order to replace the battery, you have to unscrew the sliders and pull it out. Then, you have to put the battery on the casing and put it back in. THEN, you have to attach the casing to the sliders...FROM THE INSIDE. It's very difficult and it takes the loosening of atleast 1 strong. I don't know what they were thinking with that one.Thankfully, that is the only downside to the instrument I've found. It plays great, sounds great, and looks great. Rock on, Oscar Schmidt.

Surprise

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

I bought this uke as a blem at the KC retail center. I had originally gone in to get an OU5 that a friend told me he saw there. The sound is incredible... it beats the OU5 in sound and tone, but lacks in appearance. The tuners aren't as nice as the OU5, but work fine. This is a superb instrument, and I would venture to say, probably the best value as far as sound.

Extremely poor quality control

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU2E Concert Ukulele with Active Pickup System:

I received this new ukelele with its limited lifetime waranty from MF and when I took it out of the box the electronic control pad was hanging off the side. The screws were still through the plastic but would not even match up to the holes they were suppose to go in. It looked like something I had tried to add myself after being blindfolded. Also, the battery holder and battery were just floppng around inside where they had come detached. Ironically, behind the headstock was the quality control sticker with the person's alias handwritten on it. Also, it is apparent that MF does not even inspect what it sends out to its customers. This was a real disappointment!
