There's just nothing bad to say about the OU5 koa wood ukulele. A lot of the criticisms you'll hear are based on much more expensive instruments or said by inexperienced players. For instance, that it doesn't stay in tune. Nonsense! Ukuleles use Nylon strings and they take a week or more to 'settle in'. This is normal and happens with every ukulele from the cheapest to the finest professional instruments.

After five years of constant use my OU5 looks like new and has taken on a warmth and character the way all the best wooden instruments do. I can't help but wonder what it will sound like in 100 years and I fully expect it to be around then. This is not some silly toy that will fall apart in a few months; this is a top-rate musical instrument.

For those just starting out, this is about the best first ukulele you could own. It doesn't have any of the problems with intonation (bad notes) that you find in cheap instruments. It is perfectly in tune all the way up the fretboard and all the chords sound just as they should. It's easy to hold and play, and is built to last.

Thanks and kudos to Musician's Friend for supplying such a high quality instrument at such competitive prices, and for keeping it available for so long.
Materials and workmanship are superb for a ukulele in this price range. The woods are first rate, the tuners are remarkable for the money, and the attention to detail is exquisite.
There is nothing to complain about with this quality. It has held up perfectly to daily use for five years and still looks and plays perfectly. It even sounds better!
A lot of players have been disappointed with ukes in this price range, but the OU5 has to be one of the best values in the ukulele world. I'm constantly amazed that this instrument can still be sold at a bargain price even five years later.

I've played guitar for years and decided to get each of my kids a Ukulele for Christmas. Since one is a little older and a little more serious about music, I decided to spend a bit more on hers than on her younger brothers. The difference was night and day. The OU5 lacked the volume and rich tone that the Kala I bought for my daughter. In all fairness I did spend about fifty bucks more on the solid spruce top Kala, but the difference is night and day. So the Schmidt is going back. It was (is) a beautiful little instrument though. Hope this helps.

Great for beginners and experienced musicians. Beautiful in appearance, stayed in tune well after the strings finished stretching. Nice tone.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Koa Ukulele:

I recently started playing Ukulele after playing electric and acoustic guitar and bass for 30 years. I stumbled upon "Ukulele Mike" online by accident and was hooked. I started with a Lanikai LU-21C which is pretty good but wanted something better to play also. I tried an eNueNue Lani II and it had dead spots, and poor tone so I sent it back for the OU5. The OU5 is very, very nice. It has a wonderful tone, plays very easily with no dead spots and the intonation is dead on like it should be. Not crazy about the high glossy finish on a Uke, but, it is an awesome Ukulele in looks, sound, playability, and construction. On a side note, it is perfectly normal to have to tune Ukulele's a lot with new strings because the strings are nylon and they stretch a lot, just like classical guitars with nylon strings, after that, they stay in tune. Just be patient at first, don't give up. Buy the OU5, I love mine.

        This Ukulele sucks

        By

        from NYC

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Koa Ukulele:

Although it seems like it's made of quality, the G string feels like it's tuned way too high for the gauge of string and the A string will stay in tune for about two light strokes of a chord. If feels and sounds great for the price and I know ukuleles don't stay in tune for very long but I'm very disappointed at the tightness of the G string and the A string going out of tune almost immediately after playing a chord or two. 3 out of 10 is a generous rating from an experienced ukulele player that has purchased ukulele's for half the price that played much better. Purchase at your own risk or look it up on Amazon for half the price.

        What a deal!

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Koa Ukulele:

In my opinion, the BEST lower ukulele for a serious student of music. It'd even make a great touring ukulele
Concert ukuleles give you great facets of both tenors and soprano ukuleles, and this one is remarkable.
High quality for this price range. Wood and finish are superb, intonation is solid, and durable make.
This much quality will make you feel like you're getting your money's worth. Easily the best valued musical instrument purchase I've made (and I've made a lot believe me)!

The sound and action of this instrument is great for the price. I have other ukuleles and now I am sold on the OU5 model. I have the baritone OU5, too. This instrument has such a nice and warm tone to it. Well worth the additional money. I am not kidding....you will NOT be disappointed with this instrument.

        Oscar Shmidt OU5 Concert Koa

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Koa Ukulele:

This was my first uke that I bought. It is a great starter uke! I would definitely recommend this one if you are seriously wanting to learn how to play but don't want to spend the money. The sound you get is not like any of the cheap ukes out there once you change to new strings. I used Aquila's which made it sound much brighter/fuller. It's worth every penny! If it doesn't sound good, you won't want to play.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Koa Ukulele:

This is my first Uke and I love it. I tried it out along with 1 or 2 others at a local store but they were sold out when we went to buy. I joined a uke club and play it almost every night. It sounds great. Takes a few weeks for strings to start holding a tune for longer then an hour but I'm told that's normal by other uke players. I like the size and the sound really carries. It doesn't cramp my fingers but it's totally portable. I play all sorts of Hawaiian tunes on it from Iz to Makaha Sons and they sound amazing. The inlay on the front adds a nice touch.
