For the fella wanting to go to the koa Concert, I bought one it came with Vinci strings, not only pretty but plays and sounds great, this thing too is a great instrument, I recommened this brand, in any size, they also have a lifetime warrentee so if you get a bad one, one of the few that may come off the lien bad, send it back you'll be happy in the long run. I love all of my ukes and have switched from a Samick Concert to the Oscar Schmidt, I only switched to go Koa, I bought the baritone to get another spruce top, the newest 2008 OU53S Deluxe has a solid spruce top and sounds so good it's like it's singing to or with ya... I highly recommend... not to mention by buying here you have double protection, they'll make sure you are happy.

After six months my opinion hasn't changed much. It is still the prettiest instrument I own, and still the most difficult to play. (In addition to the Oscar Schmitt,I have a classical full size guitar, as well as a strat type electric, and an inexpensive baritone uke.) I have concluded the reason it is hard to get clear chords on this instrument is that the frets are extremely low. They are half as tall or less compared to my other baritone. This means you have to fret every single string either really hard or absolutely perfectly to get a good clear tone without fret buzz. Possibly not a problem for a good profession musician, but tough for ordinary humans. I can play it, but my left hand tires quickly from the force required to hold the strings down. (I can play my other instruments for hours without this problem so it's not just me.) But, if you can play it properly and you like a really "bright" tone, this might be just what you want. I still don't think you could find a uke that is prettier to look at than this one.

After 4 years I still love it

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele:

I've had my OU53S for over 4 years now, and I've never had a single complaint about it. It stays in tune, the intonation is great, it's good-looking, and the tone is beautiful. Maybe I just got lucky with mine, but I'd like to suggest that if you get a new instrument from any maker and isn't right, send it back! Odds are, you just got a bad one. It happens, but that doesn't mean everything the company makes is going to be bad. I've had two Washburn acoustic guitars, too -- a classical cutaway and a dreadnought, and they were both fine instruments.

I've had my Uke now for about 4 weeks and I just love it. I've never been good on regular guitar, but this is a dream come true. The finish and the hardware are outstanding.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele:

I am impressed with how beautiful this instrument is. And the quality of construction is good. The setup out of the box was also pretty decent. I would describe the tone as "bright". However, I was somewhat disappointed in how very quiet this instrument is. I suspect that the heavy (and very pretty) gloss finish may be why. It seems to require a very light touch or the tone distorts. I have tried various types of strings and none of them will produce any volume. You are unlikely to disturb any neighbors when you practice with this one. If you are just going to play chords and sing along, then it would be fine for entertaining friends in your living room. If you are playin single notes then your friends better have good hearing. I am checking the "no, I would not recommend this to a friend" because of the lack of volume and because of what seems to me to be the excessively delicate touch that is required to get clear notes out of it. But I do love how it looks. And it sounds good if your touch is exactly right. I suspect it would be a somewhat difficult to play instrument if you were a beginner.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele:

This is my first uke, so I can't really judge the tone too well. It sounds good to me. However, there is a recurring cosmetic flaw in the wood on front. I had to send the first ukulele back because the wood had a 2" long flaw with a hairline crack in it. The second one I received had a 1/4 inch flaw in the wood but no crack, at least not yet, so I kept it. I am disappointed at the lack of quality control.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele:

Great little uke, lots of rich tone. Very easy transition for guitar players. it's got a really unique tone that works great with traditional hawian songs, folk, bluegrass, and with the suprising bottom of the baritone size even works great playing the blues.

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele:

received my oscar schmidt baritone uke last week and its a real beauty. however after one day of strumming, i noticed the binding on one of the strings started to unravel from contact with the fret. the second day the string broke making it necessary to purchase a new set of martin strings..

Comments about Oscar Schmidt OU53S Baritone Ukulele:

This uke is well made and sounds great. I got this because my hands are a little big for any other size uke. I do however like GCEA tuning and was able to find baritone strings with that tuning. I mostly play acoustic guitar, but enjoy side trips with other instruments and the uke is great for that.
The quality of this uke is great and I am sure any professional musican would love it.

played well out of the box, of course I managed to break a string with the first round of tuning.
intonation is good and the sound is nice.
I would recommend this little guy. shop for best price 'cause musicians friend will match it.
