OVERVIEW

The sounds of the South rediscovered in this Recording King Madison banjo.

The Recording King RK-R25 Madison Tube-and-Plate 5-String Banjo offers players an unparalleled combination of quality, versatility and value. With a hand-finished satin maple resonator, a maple neck with adjustable truss rod and a true steam-bent 3-ply maple rim, the Madison banjo's construction is a great foundation for a serious banjo. Add professional appointments like dual coordinator rods, planetary tuners, nickel-plated hardware and a Remo head, and you have an affordable, highly satisfying banjo. If you are all hung up on high priced, American made banjos because of the name on the peghead, take another look. I sold my heavy Gibson ESS that needed constant tweaking and replaced it with a couple of Recording Kings, one low end and the other a high end. I have less than half invested in both and have two distinct sounds to switch between. The fit and finish on both is excellent, the balance and feel are comparable to high end American banjos. I figure if Greg Rich could put Gibson on the map, he could do the same for Recording King, he did and then some. It comes down to not what you play but how you play it.

I already own an RK 25 but could not pass up the chance to buy another at the recent price drop. The promotion models are not what the previous models were, the flange was thinner and tinnier with different style soundholes, the fit and finish were sub Recording King quality, noticed chrome peeling already right out of the box, probably a decent banjo for the money but not what I am use to from Recording King.

Comments about Recording King RK-R25 Madison 5-String Banjo:

I'm a long-time guitar player and bassist, but a banjo dabbler. I've had a couple of banjos, and this is head and shoulders above. Great, pure, bell-like chime with lots of body. It does not have atone ring; the head is stretched right over the rock maple rim. The dual coordinating rods make it simple to set the neck angle without losing tone by sanding down the bridge. It was totally playable out of the box, but it was a snap to tweak the set-up to my taste.

My main complaints with the banjos I have owned in the past is with the necks, this one is solid, and stays in tune.

Comments about Recording King RK-R25 Madison 5-String Banjo:

This banjo has most of the features you look for : dual coordinating rods, truss rod neck. It does NT have a tone ring. The head stretches directly over the rock maple rim. This means it will not have that sharp, knife-edge tone you might be looking for for Scruggs-style bluegrass leads. Instead it has a warm, meaty tone with plenty of good banjo twang. I play more Mumford & Sons, Lumeneers kind of back up and country blues, so it's perfect for me.

The warksmanship is top notch. The frets are well dressed, and all fitting are neat and trim. The only thing it lacks inter looks department is a bound fretboard.

Love these banjos (I got 3). They have great sound, hold their tune, are easy to play, hold their tune, are an incredible deal, and did I mention that they hold their tune,. So why buy just one. I did take the flange off one to make it an open back. I am sure someday, I will add one or two of the 10K custom built banjos to my collection, but I could not be more pleased with my R25's. Plus, just in case they don't have the crack I want, I have a couple R36's to fall back on. Thanks www.musiciansfriends.com and RK keep up the great work.

This is an absolutely great banjo. I have a more expensive Recording King model with a tone ring and this banjo nearly equals it in tone. The construction is flawless. Playability is excellent. I got it on sale and frankly feel like I stole it.

I can't understand why it was discontinued. Great bargain, and great for older players who want light weight instruments (no tone ring) and a slightly more mellow and fuller sound with plenty of volume. Used ones would be good for this as well

I was looking for a lighter weight banjo. My others typically weigh 12-13 lbs. This one is lighter because it doesn't have a tone ring. But, it still has plenty of volume and a surprisingly bright tone up and down the neck. Good mix of sustain and decay. I'll use it for practice, as a backup instrument at jams or gigs, or just take it along for parking lot picking at festivals.

If you are considering an entry level/ intermediate banjo, do not pass this up. There is no better banjo on earth for the price they are currently asking. I don't even know if I was looking for another banjo. I saw the sale and figured I couldn't lose. When it arrived, it surpassed all of my expectations. The construction is rock solid throughout. The tone is beyond excellent without having been set up yet. (It will need to be set up by a professional if you cannot do it yourself. It'll be close right out of the box, but it was flawless once I got it dialed in for my tastes.) I actually like the tube & flange set up on this as well. Remove the resonator and use it as an open back too. It hangs with any other banjo in my collection. For it's range, there is no comparison at the sale price. The only other sub-$1k banjos that I would consider over this might be a goodtime 2(slimmer, faster neck.) or the goodtime special (Slimmer, faster neck, tone ring) I wasn't really expecting a beater, but I didn't expect the keeper I got either.

The tone and construction of this banjo can't be beat at this price. While I purchased it to play bluegrass, it sound great on clawhammer old times music. Bottom line, this is a great musical instrument.

Great bargain for a quality instrument. Well made, good design ideas, plays and sounds good. Would have no issue playing on gigs and intend to do so after I set it up to my preferences. Wish inexpensive instruments would have been this good when I started picking in 70s.

For the sale price, this banjo is a steal. It sounds great, and though it needs some setup, as every stringed instrument does when new, it is certainly playable right out of the box. I'm mainly a guitarist, decent mandolinist, and wanted to learn banjo- this banjo is several steps above most beginner level instruments.

I played around with a learner fender banjo for a few years, but this banjo is a revelation. So solid, such great tone for the price, and plays like a dream. For me, the banjo is a whole new game, and my playing has increased rapidly in the few weeks I have owned it.

                                                Couldn't recommend it enough.
