It's cheap. It works.I'd recommend a better uke for a beginner unless you have someone to set it up for you. Learning on a clunker can be frustrating. However it is a solid mini guitar that will take all sorts of abuse and peform well if you play around with it.
I have quality soprano, concert and tenor ukes as well as a few guitars and banjos. Actually I'm better at fixing them than playing them.
Order new light strings with the uke and replace the originals immeadately! It's still much cheaper than the next one up.
If yours looses tune after a couple of weeks of breaking in the strings; tighten the big phillips screw in the open tuners just a smidge. They are inexpensive, but they do work.
So out of the box mine held tune forever and sounded a little soft, but not bad for 30 bucks. It was playable. Intonation was close enough down the fret board to learn on and play in a group.
Tuned properly at the nut it was immeadately sharp on all frets with less problem as you work down the neck. Hard on the fingers too. Solution, replace the strings and sand about 16th of an inch off of the bottom of the nut. Better but still a little sharp on the bass strings and the bridge needs work. It is too tall and the cheap plastic is leaning toward the nut. Ok steal the dog's bone and make a new bridge. If I charged by the hour for this you would be better off buying a higher grade uke. Just lowering the plastic bridge, a few minutes work, makes a vast improvement. Bone is overkill for the uke strings, but I had plans. My first string seventh fret was a little low but epoxy and patience took care of that.
I do not know about the one bridge that came off in the reviews. That could be a problem, and if it is not glued in the right place it willl never sound right. I think if my bridge came off I'd put a tenor banjo tail piece on it and have a floating bridge. some of you understand.
So mine is bult like a tank, has a low sweet action and is currently sporting Erine ball nickle wire which brightens it up considerably visually and acoustically. This after considerable tinkering and probably outside of the scope of most beginners.
A mini folk guitar for less than $50, and a lot of fun. You can't find a tenor guitar that comes close.
Do not forget to have fun.

It is plywood and cheap. Built strong like bull. Not a delicate or bright instrument. NIce for old blues and folk music.

It is an awesome price and has nice geared tuning knobs. The overall quality of the uke is very sloppy! I was not impressed by all of the visible glue on the product, as well as all of the nicks, and dents in the neck and fret board. the sound isn't terrible but after you change the srings it doesnt sound half bad. Overall, a cheap but an ok beginner uke.

great price for any instrument, just isn't the best quality.

Our church bought 10 of these for our Vacation Bible School. Price was great for us, and the quality is surprisingly good for the price. Geared tuning is nice. So far, so good. Now lets see what 50 grade school kids can do to them.

This baritone ukulele seems to be built solid, but the strings are terrible. It also has a poor finish, but I can live with it for the price. The tone and projection are not very good, but with good strings it is a good practice uke. It is also an inexpensive way to find out if you like the baritone uke. Did I mention? It also comes with a pleather gig bag. I put CF Martin baritone strings on it and it sounds and plays alot better. The only other thing I noticed was it has a really wide string spacing, which may take getting used to. If you want an inexpensive instrument to practice or learn, this uke's for you

Bought one of these to mess around with. received it from MF in 2 days after placing my order (awesome shipping time!) i also ordered a set of strings for it as i knew from reading other reviews that the strings that come on it were no good (and they most certainly arent). the action was quite high on the one i got so i sanded the saddle to lower it at the bridge and filed the nut to lower the strings at that end and now its perfect. now it is so much fun to play!
im not a guitar tech or anything i just looked online to figure out how to adjust the action so if i can do it so can you.
the ukulele itself while in good shape is pretty cheaply made but theres no defects that i can find that would cause it to be unplayable. i think for the price its a great little uke to play around with

I saw the price on this and checked it out on youtube. Found a review that played and was surprised at the tone, so I took a shot and ordered it along with some Gallistrings fluorocarbon strings.
Arrived Tuesday after being ordered Saturday. Great job, Musicians Friend!
Original strings were nothing short of horrible. Go ahead and buy new strings when you order or you will be frustrated. I wrote a review on the Gallistrings, and would probably choose something other next time.
If you are looking for a well-made example of musical craftsmanship that your friends will stand in the living room say "ahh!" over as if it were a piece of fine furniture, this isn't it. If this was furniture, it would be the outdoor picnic table made of 2x6s.
The finish is some kind of orange stain, no idea the kind of wood. Strings are set so wide that the almost fall off the edge of the fretboard. Black stain is used to dress edges and a few spots show up at random on the body. Meanwhile a few spots are missed on the trim. A few scuffs, a few unsanded saw burrs. The bridge was a little high, so I had to sand that down a bit.
But - with the improved strings, I gotta admit really like the tone. Projection isn't great, but not awful either, and since I am playing for myself, I am good with the projection. If I start playing professionally (LOL) I will get a replacement instrument that costs at least as much as a good gig bag. I guess you would amp it as well.
I was really pleased with how well the instrument maintained pitch up and down the fretboard. I really expected any problems to show up there, but when you play up to the 12th fret, the tuner says you are really close to a perfect octave above the open string.
The sound is softer, less punchy than my other, smaller ukes (soprano, concert, tenor), but I can work on my finger picking if I want something crisper.
On balance, I think for the money, you won't find anything more fun. It is playable, has a nice warm tone, and gives you a chance to see (at a price close to that of a decent harmonica) if you want to expand your uke experience, back into the uke from a guitar, or just learn how to play some easy chords for your own amusement. I spend more than this taking the kids to Wendys for lunch.

I was plesantly surprised to see what I got. You cannot complain about the setup and features of this inexpensive uke. Unfortunately mine had a buzzing cross brace...I sent it back. A word of caution for those moving up from smaller ukes: Baritone's have wide string spacing and you might not like that.
The finish was unusual. The "burnt orange" stain was, well....just odd.

After reading some reviews, I thought I'd get one and see/hear for myself. Everyone said to expect some setup issues and cheap strings. And they were right, but a set of good strings and some sandpaper to the bridge saddle and I had a fun uke to play. I found that mine was well constructed. I also filed the inside of the nut a bit and oiled the tuners and set their tension. I gave it a four because it is an entry level instrument... but for value... it is really a five plus if you set it up.
