The guitar is a platform for development. You can use it for anything you desire. Many of the reviewers do not understand a resonator guitar. The nature of the guitar is such you must learn how to take care of a resonator.Any resonator can and will have buzzes and other sounds that you will need to know how to fix.The Rouge is a fine guitar that you can upgrade and turn it into a tip top guitar that has tone and sustain like the very best.Mine has a bone nut, ebony maple saddle and a Quarterman cone. The guitar sounds fantastic and plays and stays in tune.I did all the work myself and you can learn how to also.Get a DVD on resonator setup and you will become a happier learner.I have been playing since the 70s and have owned at least twenty different resonators and all needed a little tweaking at times. The Rouge is a fine guitar if the string buzzes learn to take care of it.You should know how to set the cone to the desired tone and volume you are looking for also. The resonator is very different type of guitar that can bring you great pleasure. The problem with your Rouge may be you.Go learn how to take care of your guitar.

Poorest quality instrument I've ever owned but cheaper than any starter dobro

So after about a year of learning to play the resonator on this instrument I think I'm ready to give it a review.

The Good: It looks great (on the outside) and sounds decent. In fact for the price it sounds awesome.

The Bad: From day one the thing has had this really terrible buzzing that would come and go. You can tell that the spider bridge is ridiculously poor quality. I tried muffling things, readjusting them and even put a piece of fleece under the tail. It didn't work but the buzzing did randomly go away for about 6 months.

The Ugly: The buzzing noise eventually came back and with vengeance. Today I totally disassembled the dobro only to uncover that this is the worst constructed instrument I've ever laid eyes on. There are jagged pieces of plywood, holes that look like they were cut out by a 5 year-old, and all manor of wood chips floating around inside that nobody cleaned out. Once I cleaned out the inside (as best I could) I gently reassembled all the pieces. While screwing the coverplate back on, I then discovered that at least 3 of the 12 screw holes were stripped.

You get what you pay for.
Typical low-end instrument
Pretty on the outside, monstrousity of broken plywood and glue on the inside.
Can't beat the price but you get what you pay for.

Great little rez at a great price! Fun around the house

Comments about Classic Spider Resonator:

This little resonator completely surprised me. I was expecting junk and just figured I'd slap in a high nut, ditch the tuners and use as a dobro if all else failed. The unit comes slack so you need to google how to set up a resonator to get going. It's not playable out of the box but setup is a breeze and good learning experience for newbie rez owners (moi). After setup and break in this thing has been totally stable. I've played 3 finger delta blues style for 40 years both with and without slide, std and open tunings. Once the strings settled down (not bad for orientation time frame), the bridge got fully seated and the rez cone and spider found their sweet spot this thing has been a blast to play. Only potential issue is the width of the neck at the nut. It's a bit narrow (I'm used to a Martin D-28). It's a tight finger fit through 5th fret which takes a bit of adjustment (I have 4 other secondary guitars that also require some mental readjustment when I pick them up too lighter strings might help in this area...). And, I don't have big hands or fingers just kind of average. The action is fine and the neck is straight with no high or low spots. No fret buzz while playing and slide works fine without fret hang up or chatter. I got it on sale so for what I payed for it, it's been great! I leave it out in the living room unlike my other instruments for any spontaneous inspiration! At this price I'm not worried about any nicks, dings or crashes in leaving it lie around. Great little house addition for jamming with friends.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

I got this guitar a couple weeks ago for playing slide - I like it! It isn't the best resonator I've ever played, but for what it is, the price is great! I play mostly delta blues, so I would have preferred a metal guitar, but this one sounds good as well. It takes a glass slide well. It's definitely sturdy, you can feel that when you pick it up. I recommend this guitar for sure.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

I was surprised with the build quality coming from the Rouge factory. I used to own a acoustic guitar back in the day when they first entered our marked and I must say it is great instrument for 3rd of the cost. I could not find any quality issues at all. Sound is good too. I would not hesitate to buy it again for a single bit.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

I just received this resonator--got the sunburst round neck* version. It looks beautiful and sounds very good to my ears. I was looking for an instrument with an authentic tone, and did not want to break the bank, as this will be used mainly for occasional recordings. It was on my wish list, and when the price got below two hundred, I jumped on it--no reason not to, really. Previous reviewers mentioned having to make minor adjustments with a screwdriver, but I seemed to have lucked out--mine came set up very well with no buzzing. Snap one up!
      * apparently, round neck is best for playing like a regular guitar; flat neck is for laptop playing

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

Bought this because i wanted a cheap resonator to play a little slide on. For me,this is.perfect. I got it,tuned it up,not really expecting much, but this thing actually plays pretty darn good! Alot better than i would have thought. The action frets good, and still plays slide very well. A great deal more guitar than I thought I could get at this price. Flat fretboard, which is great for slide work. And very good volume with picks. Not much with bare fingers though. But ive never played a resonator that was great for that. Ive actually had trouble putting it down. A little weak on the sixth string, but thats not a deal breaker. Plan on switching out the tuning keys though. I have a couple that slip, but I was expecting that from the start. I'll slap some Grovers on it. Thats the only issue i have with this guitar. I'm actually pretty surprised. No,its not a 1930's style O National. But if you find one of those for this price, please call me and consider it sold!

Had actually ordered black but received a sunburst, however, the finish is so surprisingly beautiful I am more than content with this style. What really has cinched my favor with this instrument is the gorgeous tone. I did not expect this caliber of sound for this, relatively, paltry price tag! Impressive!

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

This resonator guitar sounds great! The one I received also had many rattles at first. At first, I was bothered and was about to send it back. But, I found it was very easy to fix. With a Phillips screwdriver, I gently tightened the screw that is just underneath the bridge. If you look at the picture of this dobro, look at the center of the spider and you'll see a tiny hole. This is where the adjustment screw is located. It didn't take much at all and this rattling sounding "thing" turned into a beautiful sounding, smooth, musical dobro.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

This (the sunburst model) is an attractive and great sounding instrument (even with the strings it comes with). Everyone I've shown the guitar to says, "Wow!" For those new to the resonator guitar, note that square neck is for the lap playing method. Round neck is typically played like a standard guitar. Rogue makes both models. I chose the square neck and bought a dobro type steel bar. I tuned to the guitar to the common GBDGBD and it sounds quite good. There are plenty of videos out there to help you get started. This guitar looks like many others that cost a great deal more... I've not had an opportunity to make a hands-on comparison of this guitar to others, but I do know I am very please with the Rogue Spider Classic Resonator. In closing, this instrument is fun to play. At the price I got it at, it is quite a deal.
