The guitar is a platform for development. You can use it for anything you desire. Many of the reviewers do not understand a resonator guitar. The nature of the guitar is such you must learn how to take care of a resonator.Any resonator can and will have buzzes and other sounds that you will need to know how to fix.The Rouge is a fine guitar that you can upgrade and turn it into a tip top guitar that has tone and sustain like the very best.Mine has a bone nut, ebony maple saddle and a Quarterman cone. The guitar sounds fantastic and plays and stays in tune.I did all the work myself and you can learn how to also.Get a DVD on resonator setup and you will become a happier learner.I have been playing since the 70s and have owned at least twenty different resonators and all needed a little tweaking at times. The Rouge is a fine guitar if the string buzzes learn to take care of it.You should know how to set the cone to the desired tone and volume you are looking for also. The resonator is very different type of guitar that can bring you great pleasure. The problem with your Rouge may be you.Go learn how to take care of your guitar.

So after about a year of learning to play the resonator on this instrument I think I'm ready to give it a review.

The Good: It looks great (on the outside) and sounds decent. In fact for the price it sounds awesome.

The Bad: From day one the thing has had this really terrible buzzing that would come and go. You can tell that the spider bridge is ridiculously poor quality. I tried muffling things, readjusting them and even put a piece of fleece under the tail. It didn't work but the buzzing did randomly go away for about 6 months.

The Ugly: The buzzing noise eventually came back and with vengeance. Today I totally disassembled the dobro only to uncover that this is the worst constructed instrument I've ever laid eyes on. There are jagged pieces of plywood, holes that look like they were cut out by a 5 year-old, and all manor of wood chips floating around inside that nobody cleaned out. Once I cleaned out the inside (as best I could) I gently reassembled all the pieces. While screwing the coverplate back on, I then discovered that at least 3 of the 12 screw holes were stripped.

You get what you pay for.
Typical low-end instrument
Pretty on the outside, monstrousity of broken plywood and glue on the inside.
Can't beat the price but you get what you pay for.

THESE RESONATORS ARE BEAUTIFUL. I HAVE THREE SQUARE NECK. THE FIRST ONE, A SUNBURST, I PURCHASED SEVERAL YEARS AGO DID HAVE SOME PROBLEMS, A TUNING PEG BROKE AND THE NUT BROKE. NOW I USE THIS ONE CAMPING. I DECIDED I NEEDED A BACKUP. SO I GOT A BLACK ONE AND ADDED A PICKUP FOR PLAYING OUT AND A HEADSET MIC. IT'S BEEN PERFECT. WHEN THEY WENT ON SALE LAST CHRISTMAS I GOT ANOTHER SUNBURST SO I WOULD HAVE ONE AT ANOTHER LOCATION. THEY ALL SOUND AWESOME.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

I bought this square neck resonator about 8 years ago. I started to practice with it, then it sat and collected dust for a while. Picked it up again a couple years later and started playing with it and "TWANG!", the nut cracked and broke off on one end. Probably only had 2 hours total with this thing. Long story short, I haven't been able to find another nut that fits, it seems the cheap plastic nut is a bit wider than most dobro nuts, which are 3/16". Musicians Friend does not sell this part and was no help, which frankly I found a little disconcerting and would probably make me hesitate from buying anything with a Rogue label in the future. I'm sure there's a way to fix it, but I'll have to find a luthier since I know nothing about repairs.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

I don't know how this compares to a professional grade instrument and I have no aspirations to play like Jerry Douglas but if I can learn a few old timey Brother Oswald licks I'll be a happy camper. This instrument sounds like a dobro to my ears so I am very happy with this purchase. The string height is a tad low so I'll be planning a nut and saddle upgrade down the road but for now I am just waiting for my order of the "green book" to arrive so I can get started learning to play this hound dog.

Bought this as a gift for my banjo playing wife who wants to learn another instrument for our bluegrass endeavors. It appears to be very well made and other than tuning ready to go out of the box. A great deal from Musicians Friend.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

Bought this guitar on sale here at MF. Its my first resonator although I have played a Gretsch version locally. Its no Gretsch, but at half the price it can't be beat. What's the difference? The Gretsch feels more playable for fingered chords and of course, the Gretsch has nicer details... the headstock in particular. But I'm not here to praise Gretsch, I'm good with this Rogue. It's selling points were all the great reviews here at MF and its mahogany and spruce construction. I bought the Rogue primarily for bottleneck play and occasional fingerpicking. It excels at bottleneck but for me the action is a little too high for Barr chording. Could it be adjusted? Not sure, it looks complicated under all that chrome. But I'm liking it for what it is... a good bottleneck beast with tone. Now, one thing for you Stones fans... your bottleneck won't reach much above the 12th fret. That makes playing No Expectations kinda bland when you can't hit that high A in open E standard. Otherwise, its a good choice for a beginner if you can live without having a cutaway or on-board electronics.

Comments about Rogue Classic Spider Resonator:

I had a great run with my first Rogue round neck lasting about three years. I sold in during a time of rampant desire to lighten up. I do believe in the value of lightening up materially, and rarely do I miss what I let go of. Well, the Rogue resonator is a big exception to the rule for me. I love using it for finger picking, and for creating slide guitar parts for recording. It adds so much to many of my arrangements. I checked out several more expensive brands when I decided to put a resonator back in my life. None compared to the Rogue. So, I came home to the one that is the easiest transition from my Taylor and is exactly like my first resonator. The one difference is that my first Rogue had a pesky little intermittent buzz coming from the cone, the new one does not. Honestly, I couldn't ask for more at any price. Miraculously, this instrument can be had on the extreme cheap!
