I'm a longtime guitar player, got the itch to try the mandolin. Figured to start as inexpensively as possible, bought this Rogue package. I've had more fun for the price than I ever would have thought possible! And I have learned a lot, too. I've always been afraid to mess with my own guitars, but after a well-known luthier screwed up the setup of a pretty expensive classical guitar of mine I thought I'd use this to build my own setup abilities.
First off, the bad: the nut was way too high to be decently playable; the bridge was so high that at its lowest setting it was still off the scale over the 12th fret; I have read some reviewers complain the strings are bad, but they seemed all right to me during setup, but nothing I'd leave on.
Setup: I took everything but the tuners off, polished and waxed her. Lubed the tuners (you can use pencil lead, which is mostly graphite, or a small dab of vaseline, oiled the fretboard (I have a Dunlop guitar care kit, used the fretboard oil in the kit). Used a Dremel to shave the bridge down close, and then finish-sanded it on the body for a good fit.
I made my own nut saws and took two iterations to get the bridge and nut heights where I wanted them. Currently at 12th fret I'm 1.5 mm over with no buzzing, I may try lower action to see how it plays; intonation is dead-on, measured with an electronic tuner; the floating bridge is wood, easy to set, looks cheap but works very well. I lubed the nut before putting on the strings.
Reassembled and changed the strings to D'Addarios (the same ones Ricky Skaggs uses!) and started playing her tonight.
The good: Action is very nice; no fret buzzing on the entire length of the fretboard; sound is nicer than I expected, kind of woody, not tinny; the finish is better than I expected (not perfect, but darned good); the binding is much better than it has the right to be (for the price). All in all, for a campfire or starter mando this is a crazy bargain. I researched a couple-dozen luthier websites and read a few books to figure out how to set her up right - I've gained the confidence to mess with my harem of guitars now! Best money I've spent in a loooooong time.
Oh, and the books are both useful, and the gig bag is padded and well-constructed. It's such a good value I want to buy another one! When you order it buy a couple of sets of replacement strings and some picks!

Great little instrument. Don't be afraid to jump on this deal.
As usual, I'm not disappointed by Rogue. I've bought 2 Rogue guitars and this mandolin and they all sound, play and feel great.
Fit and finish looks much more expensive.
You can't beat the price on this one.

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
My first mandolin; very good deal, I thought and just what I was looking for as a beginner. I am having a great time learning on this instrument. I would recommend it and actually have sent someone to Musician's Friend website who was looking for a guitar and possibly the same mandolin that I purchased.

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
I've been looking for a mandolin that could play all style of music. Folk to Psychedelic Rock. I also wanted a mandolin that would replace the idea of having to buy a mandolin just for a specific type of music. I've been looking at all the Rogue mandolin models for a few weeks and I really wanted a mandolin that came with a beginner guitar book.

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
I bought this product for my daughter. she is beginner to play Mandolin. (she is all state player of flute. and she is good piano player).
she told me after she tuning mandolin, the tone won't last long. it might because of the instrument is still new (?). I had a thought if the packages could also include a few picks will help the beginners. I have to buy picks for her from other resource.
overall good product and service

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
I bought one of these from amazon awhile back, I thought it was pretty, good sound but I never played it because i listen to mainly rock and didnt know any songs to play for it so I sold it. I started listening to folk music lately, started missing it, and wanted one again. So I ordered this one, decided to get the pack. Mainly for the case. I'm solo happy MF was helpful when I called them, this thing is gorgeous. Sounds great! And the case it comes with is very nice!! I play bass, guitar, ukulele and have for a few years, im not a professional but I know what a good instrument looks and sounds like. This is a great instrument. Yes there are obviously going to be better mandolins. But for the price, it is great!

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
nice quality for the price. Only 2 problems I've seen so far (after 3 weeks of an hour a day practice). The screw hole on one of the tuners is stripped out, and the D strings don't have very good tone. It did require a little setup work, so far I've only lowered the bridge to make it a little easier for my inexperienced fingers to play.

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
Purchased this to give to my son for Christmas, so at this point I cannot speak to the quality of instrument. All I can say at this point is that it looks like a mandolin that cost much more than I paid. I also purchased a mandolin strap as it was not included in the package.
Pros
- Great Tone
- Quality Instrument
Cons
- Alittle Hard To Fret

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:
I'm the former lead singer of the Trails End Band and this instrument exceeds all my expectations. Would definetly recommend this mandolin.
