Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have played guitar for about 35 years and enjoy playing bluegrass. I couldn't decide on a mandolin or a banjo for a new instrument to learn. When I found the Rouge mandolin for the price it was a no brainier. I've never played so I have nothing to compare it to so I've compared it as if it were a guitar, it's what I know.
This is a great beginner mandolin. Or maybe your advanced and want something to keep in the vehicle In case a hoe-down kicks off! It has a decent sound, a bit of sustain, loud....very loud, tuning keys stick and is hard to tune but to my surprise once tuned it stays there. I've played it and hour a day since I bought it about a week ago. Sometimes it'll fall flat just a bit but not complaining on a cheap instrument. I don't know of any cheapo guitar I ever had staying in tune like this thing does. As a matter of fact I don't tune it anymore than I tune my Taylor guitar in the same playing time. But I would add it may have to do with the strings. As I said Ive played guitar for a while and I know that you always keep strings on hand so I bought a set of Elixir strings w it. Glad I did. The strings that came on this thing were so rusty flecks of rust would chip as I ran my fingers down them. I didn't even try to tune them. I tossed em, tightened up all the screws on it since some were loose including the tuning keys and put the new strings on. Set the bridge and intonation, tuned it up and greased the tuning keys. Found some chords online and was playing rhythm on three songs within an hours time....all total. Now I imagine playing solos w this thing will require more time. So to sum it up. If you're a beginner or you child wants to learn to play but not sure. You can't go wrong with this one. If your thinking of buying it...go ahead. Oh, go ahead and grab a capo, you'll be glad you did.

Wanted to try playing the mandolin but didn't want to make any real investment until I was sure. The Rogue mandolin provided the perfect solution. I did some research and went through the reviews and based on that, I purchased mandolin strings and picks with my order. I would advise also purchasing a mandolin strap at the same time.
The mandolin arrived in good condition. It had to be tuned but it was ready to go out of the box. No action or bridge issues. It sounds great and is quite handsome . Very happy with my purchase and very grateful that such an instrument is available.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Excellent mandolin for the money. You need to immediately throw away the stock strings. Used my nut file to open up the nut and saddle slots. Glued cork shelf liner material to the underside of tailpiece cover and to the string bearing tailpiece affixed to the top. The cork kills all the ringy el-cheapo mandolin sounds (overtones) and install some light gauge mandolin strings. I greased nut and saddle slots and greased the funky stock tuners. If the builder would spend another X per unit, and raise the price accordingly, for higher quality strange and tuners, this would be a world beater. I feel after my 2 hours of screwing with it and investment in strings and greases, it could compete with lower end Kentuckys, for example. In other words, mandolins that cost about four times as much. Plays easy too.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I've been playing all manner of guitar/piano over 20 yrs and this is my first mandolin. Has decent tone and is plenty loud. Fretting notes is no problem. The fit and burst finish on this instrument are fantastic for the price; I've bought a few other Rogue items over the years and all have been really nice and playable for the price. Only two issues here, which I expected: the tuners are not great (I'll replace 'em eventually) and the fret board is sweating out the ebonized-type finish (probably since it's new). Great buy regardless!

I bought my Rogue mandolin a year and a half ago, and love the tone. I feel like I should step up a notch or two product-wise, and I will - when I find a product whose tone matches the price better than my Rogue. Still lookin'!

Okay, not the best mandolin but for the money you can't go wrong. When I ordered it I didn't know what to expect at that price point. When I opened up the package I was pleasantly surprised. The sunburst finish was absolutely flawless. Strings sounded a little tinny, the intonation was off, and the action was not set. Once I changed strings, moved and raised the bridge it was fine. If your interested in mandolin but not sure this is the mandolin for you.
