Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

after observing a very straight neck, decided to see what I could do with this mandolin. sanded bridge curvature for perfect fit to mandolin, lowered strings at nut, installed new strings and the results were nothing short of amazing. In my opinion I took a 50$ mandolin and now have one that soulds and feels like a 250$ mandolin. very, very pleased with outcome. I just ordered another one to see if I can achieve the same results for a friend.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Have I ever played a mandolin? Nope. Have I ever thought about playing one? Nope. Did I fully realize what I was getting myself into? Nope. But, I bought this mandolin on a whim, figuring I couldn't go wrong (especially for the price), wanting to learn a new instrument for a bit of distraction and stress relief, and I couldn't be happier!

Learning on it and LOVE it. Could probably use some minor adjustments, but nothing crazy. Sounds great. Great fun. So glad to have it and have tried to convince everyone to get one...!

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have been playing for 30 years and when I saw this mandolin I was skeptical. I had to buy one because it was so cheap. All I can say is wow.. I am amazed that this mandolin is so cheap and very well made.

Mine came missing the screw on the pick guard but that is no big deal. I was shocked that when it arrived I did not need to do much set up on it. I made some adjustments on the bridge height but other than that I was surprised.

This mandolin does not have a truss rod in the neck so you would need to make sure you don't take it in extreme temperature changes.

If you are wondering if it is worth buying this mandolin, all I can say is you better grab one while you can. Its well worth it and I cant put the thing down.

Don't wait another second, buy one now, while you can.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I have been playing guitar and bass since the age of 8 yrs. old. I was interested in the mandolin for a while since playing with bands that included fiddle and mandolin.
Got my Rogue in the mail 2 days ago and was surprised at the quality and beauty for such a small price. It was set-up fairly well with only a tweak of the bridge. It frets easy and the strings sound ok. I got an extra set from MF along with the purchase. I've already mastered the major, minor, and 7th chords. Working on my bar chords, and playing a few lead solo's. MF has always mailed my orders quickly and have never had anything broken. If you are interested in learning a mandolin, try this little Rogue, I think you'll be surprised!

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Bought this mandolin at as a beginner instrument to learn the basics. At the price I paid, I had VERY low expectations. I had toyed around with other entry level mandolins at local music stores at 4 times the cost of this one and was not impressed.

Much to my surprise, this mandolin far exceeded my expectations. After tuning it up and checking the intonation, the bridge placement from the factory seemed to be pretty good with no additional setup needed to get started. The fret dressings on the edges are much better than the other beginner mandos that I tried (including Ibanez and Rover). Tone, playability, and finish are good considering it's price. There is a bit of fret buzz if you chop on it too hard, but raising the bridge should take care of this. There were no dead spots on the neck of my instrument.

The mando is not perfect though. The tuners leave A LOT to be desired. It takes a long time to dial in the right tension and goes out of tune after one or two songs. The tail piece cover is a pressed fit and pops off (hitting the floor) if you bump it. The side of the neck does not have fret dots, but this can be easily fixed using a black marker on the binding.

Considering what I paid for the instrument, I got much more than I expected and would purchase it again.

This mandolin is easy to play and fun - the strings were new and not inferior as another review stated.
We bought it to learn to play and have been very pleased with it. It is a nice looking instrument and met all of our expectations.
                You can't beat the price.
