Actually got one of these mandolins with the guitar package but im going to review it seperately here. First off i received the mando in 2 days from MF, awesome shipping time! When i first got it the action was super high and both G strings were "dead" they didnt sound right at all. i thought maybe i had gotten a lemon but i went ahead and changed strings (which i had planned on doing anyways) and the g strings sounded much better. not sure what was wrong with the factory string but if you get this mando the first thing you need to do is toss them in the trash (or save them for emergency spares)

now the action was so high when you would tune the mando open and then fret the first fret it would pull the note way sharp. cant have that so i filed the nut slots to lower the action as well as sanded the saddle and lowered it at the bridge end as well. i had some buzzing so i leveled the frets and recrowned and finished them. now all is perfect. my father in law is a mando player and he says it has the lowest action hes ever seen and it has absolutely no buzzing or dead frets! im not a luthier or guitar tech, i just did some research online to learn how to do the things it needed. lastly i replaced the pick guard with a custom curly maple wooden piece i made. i think it looks pretty cool and sets the mando apart

anyways if you get this mando be prepared to adjust some things before its really playable but at this price point i think its worth it, especially if you can do it yoursself (YOU CAN!). ive seen this same exact mandolin sold under a different name brand for over twice as much money

This entry level mandolin succeeds in providing a basic and serviceable instrument for very little money. I purchased this as a way to explore adding mandolin chops to my repertoire. Two issues come to mind while playing and working with this mandolin. However, I think they are to be expected when playing a relatively inexpensive instrument.

1. Tuning: The tuning machines look nice with the exposed gear, though they are not as precise as I like. Having played many other instruments of various qualities, it seems that the better instruments will spend more money on tuning machines with higher gear ratios that allow for more precise tuning. It takes time to get used to how much "play" is in each tuning machine.

2. Intonation: I have adjusted the position of the bridge on the body as well as the height to get the mandolin to play more in tune as I ascend the neck. It will take more adjustments to get it even more dialed in, though my intention is to practice more than I actually play this out at gigs. I found that my A string has an issue around the 14th fret where I cannot cleanly fret the note without it sounding like the note at the 15th fret. Upon closer inspection, I can see that the fret wire is not completely straight across the neck and has a slight warp to it.

To sum up, you get what you pay for. As an entry-level instrument, I am happy with this purchase. I can practice with an instrument that will allow me to explore the basic concepts of playing a mandolin. If I decide to make an investment in a better mandolin, I will know that this Rogue mandolin will have played its part in helping me improve my chops and feel like I earned the upgraded instrument.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

Been playing guitar for about 5 years now and decided to give mando a go. Found this one and thought I couldn't go wrong for the price. The instrument looks good and sounds good with a good set of strings. One downside is that it didn't arrive set up, but it did come with a set of instructions on how to do it yourself, with a lot of time and effort, one could get it playing easier on their own. I couldn't quite get the action the way I liked it myself, so right now the strings are sitting pretty high. Overall this little gem gets four stars for value combined with quality.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I bought two mandolins with the intent of playing one while teaching grandsons with the other.

            Both are sunburst.

For the price, they seem to be a very good deal. They both are without cosmetic flaws. They both required a bit of setup. I've only set up one so far, and it took about 30 minutes. I slacked the strings and "spread" them so that they were off of the nut, but still on the bridge. At this point I tightened the eight phillips screws on the back of the tuners. Next, using a needle file, I filed down inside of the nut slots to set the strings slightly lower. Next I put the strings back over the nut and into the proper slots. Next, I turned the thumb screws to lower the bridge a turn or two. Next I adjusted the bridge position for the G-strings, and then for the E-strings using an electronic tuner (cheap Snark tuner in this case).

The result is good tonation, and good string action. I tuned it up. I played it for 30 minutes, set it aside for an hour, came back and checked the tuning. It was ok, but not exact. I checked the tonation too. It was good.

The next tuning was very slight, and held through an hour of playing. That's good enough for me.

I've played guitar for 50+ years, and do all of my own setup work.

This is my first mandolin. It will probably suit me just fine without needing to upgrade later. If I played out professionally, I'd go with a pro instrument, but not needed in my case. This seems like a good starter instrument.

Out of the box, it was ok, but if you like it to sound it's best, set it up.

My band was looking for Mandolin sounds on a couple songs for our new album. We didn't want to break the bank on anything fancy, so we tried out the RM-100A. It definitely does the job. It's a nice sounding Mandolin that holds tune well with good intonation--perfect for beginners or musicians like me who want something low cost and descent that will receive casual use.

Comments about Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin:

I bought this mandolin simply because it was the cheapest available, and others had said it was good enough to see if I would enjoy the mandolin or not (I play guitar and other stringed instruments). I was pleasantly surprised. This is a good value for the money--basically the cost of the family going to the movies one time, or less. The finish, other than one glaring spot where the fretboard meets the body, was good. The nut seemed cut well. The instrument was even intonated well, although I removed the bridge to lower the action and intonated it again myself. The frets are good. The tuners are a little quirky but work and hold pitch once you stretch the strings in. The sound is very good--it doesn't quack or sound like a tuba--it's a mandolin and produces mandolin noises suitable to convince the beginner that he or she is indeed playing a mandolin! I do have an occasional slight buzz coming from the tailpiece, but again, for the money, I can't complain. If you're looking to try the mandolin or want to give a gift to someone who's young or new to the instrument, you could do much worse.
