Overall, my rating is a 10 because I think the Ukulele Starter Pack is a fantastic value for what it is. Everybody should buy one and try it out! There might be less stress in the world lol. Ukulele strings don't make a beginner's fingers as sore as say a guitar will and that leads to more willingness to practice.

So... if you don't know whether the ukulele is right for you, this cheap starter pack should be your pick. You're not wasting any money and this little ukulele could be your gateway drug . Have fun!
The tuning pegs don't have as a tight a grip on the string as my other isntruments. If you can accept the fact, that you'll need to tune it just about every time you play it, you'll do fine. And if you're a beginner, you could use the practice anyway. It's only 4 strings. When you see Jake Shimabakuro play (he's famous), you'll note that he tunes his ukulele by ear before every song. If he can do it, you can do it .

Other reviewers have said new strings have improved the tension on the strings. I haven't tried this, but I will. It's not unreasonable.

Note: I gave the features a 7, but only because of the tuners.
I didn't find any big, noticeable flaws. There's a small scratch or imperfection in the body that the finish was applied over, but for the money, it's not worth complaining about. The body of the ukulele is not shiny, but a pretty matte brown. It looks elegant for what it is. It seems put together well and neatly. It's nice looking!

The gig bag is the cheapest one out of all the gig bags I have for various instruments. There's no pocket and it's made out of weird vinyl. There is no shoulder strap. But the handle is strong and the bag is padded, so it does protect the ukulele more than adequately.

I gave the quality an 7 because of the tuners and the gig bag quality, but don't let any of this stop you from buying the ukulele pack. Buy it! It's totally worth the money and for a starter instrument, it's totally fine. Why spend more if you don't know whether you'll love playing the ukulele yet?
The bottom line is that I got to try ukulele and decide whether I liked playing for a mere $$. With all my instruments, I promise myself that if I enjoy playing and pursue it actively, then I will buy myself an upgrade and gift my starter instrument to someone who might enjoy playing it as much as I do. I've had so much fun with this thing (you can get free lessons at ukeschool.com) that I'm definitely going to upgrade some time this year!

If something happened to this little baby before I was ready to upgrade, I would definitely buy it again. Similarly, after owning one myself, I'd also buy it for other people as a gift. It's a starter instrument that may meet your needs forever or maybe you'll do like I do .

I gave the value a 10 because it's a great value for the money. How many times in life can you pick up a new hobby for cheap - particularly a new musical hobby?

I bought this as my first ukulele because I'm interested in playing, but I wanted to be sure that I'm going to stick with it before sinking a good chunk of money into a more expensive ukulele.
The strings are cheap and hard to tune, but I had been told to expect that in a cheaper ukulele and I have some Aquila's coming in the mail.
I would recommend this as a starter uke or something to travel with if you don't want to bang up a nicer instrument, but probably not to an experienced player.

Perfect for Camping and Beginners

Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack review.
Rogue Ukulele Soprano RU12

This uke is great for beginners and is quite possibly the perfect campfire instrument. Sound is great for the money. Fit and finish was a bit lacking, but a quick once over with a metal file fixed that. The pitch pipe included is less than useless; I recommend googling "online ukulele tuner" instead. Keeps a tune just fine once the pegs have been tightened with a Phillips screwdriver.

If you're new to uke and looking to try one out or looking for a beater to throw in the back of the car, then I would highly recommend this ukulele.
A bargain uke and a bag to put it in. The pitch pipe included in the package is for guitar, not ukulele.
Sharp edges on frets required filing. Other minor cosmetic flaws do not detract from playability.
Fantastic value for the money. This is a real ukulele, not a toy.

Rogue Standard/Sorprano Ukulele: A Review

By Jahn Burns

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

Remember, kid-Os...as with ANY stringed instruments, it's always a good practice to make sure your tuners are good and tightened. Likewise, new strings need to be stretched often for optimum sound quality.
This little gem is not at all a complicated instrument. The features are, well...pretty straight foreword. Acrylic tuning pegs, beautiful rosewood fretboard, solid bridge, decent stock strings, and overall sturdy construction.
This ukulele delivers the outstanding quality I have come to expect from Rogue. It really is well made, and I totally recommend this ukulele.
What can I say? Rogue offers a wide range of amazing intruments at an unbeatable price! I'm merely a hobbiest player, and Rogue really hits the spot.

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

OK seriously compare other student ukuleles at this price point. This Rogue is made of mahogany wood, has a real fingerboard with inlaid marker dots, real bridge, real bone saddle and nut. Most importantly the bridge and frets are accurately placed for good intonation - a problem for OTHER cheaply made, short scale stringed instruments that I have tried. Planning to use these instruments to start a ukulele instruction program for kids.

Comment on tuners and tuning (follow-up)

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

This has been mentioned in earlier reviews, but probably needs repeating every couple of pages: these tuners need to be tightened first thing, or they WILL be useless, and make the uke unplayable. To do this, simply tighten the screw at the end of the tuning peg - carefully - just enough to tighten the tuner so that it doesn't slip after tightening. Also,I notice that uke strings take a long time to stretch out to the point they stay in tune. You can help the process by carefully stretching the strings away from the fingerboard while sliding along the length of the string. Repeat this several times until they hold a tuning (you have to do the same with new guitar strings, except they seem to stabilize sooner than uke strings).

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

First of I'm in a christian metal band, very experienced musician but I have an acoustic project going on so I thought I'd add a ukulele to it. My first ukulele.. Very very disappointed with it. I only bought it because the reviews looked promising, worst 30 bucks I've ever invested. Tuning pegs are crap, the nut doesn't even have the strings spaced out the same, fret board had glue around the fret bars. The overall look of the instrument is just pathetic. Cheaply made, I'd suggest you to buy a better quality ukulele if you're a beginner. First time buying an instrument without playing it first, ha. Never again..

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

Found that it wouldnt hold tune but after reading the reviews I tightened the tuning screws and now its ok (don't over tighten the screws you will strip them). This is a cheap uke and I would not have got a gig bag in my local shop for what this deal cost. Never tried a uke before but after a few days I'm impressed. This is a cheap uke good for the price and if I improve I'll get something better. Not sorry I bought it.

    Okay.

    By Vivian Wu

    from Chicago

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

I like the sound and feel while holding it, but my nails seem to scratch the right half of the uke's body(lower half) when I play.
The company that made this ukulele also put the wrong label in the body of the ukulele. It had baritone labeled instead of soprano.
The strings that came with it were not the best I've had.
I like that it's light weight and came with a gig bag.
Little specks of pieces of the wood are coming off of the ukulele, and I've only had it for 1 day.
I guess the features are okay, I just had to tighten the tunners.
It was fine for it's price, but in general not so well. The bridge broke off a little when I had tightened the 4th string too much, but only a little, like a nail clipped size. The wood is not the best, not polished well.
Do I need to elaborate even more?

    Fun Starter Instrument

    By Lysa Elric

    from WA

Comments about Rogue Ukulele Starter Pack:

This is a very fun starter instrument. I just got it in the mail today, and I've been playing it all day. I honestly don't care about the quality, because this is just a starter instrument. It functions well, I can learn to play the ukulele on this, and it's tons of fun! That's all I care about!
The Case: 10/10 This is pretty much the reason I bought this starter ukulele over others. It comes with a nice padded case that serves its purpose.

The Pitch Pipe: 4/10 I laughed when I saw a guitar pitch pipe in the box. It's pretty useless. Some of the notes aren't even in the same octave as they're supposed to be. My little brother liked to play it as a pseudo-harmonia, though, so that's a plus. Use internet resources for tuning instead.

The Starter Guide: 5/10 The guide is cute, but honestly, you can find all of this information and way more online. Some of the stuff in the guide is also elusive. Something I noticed immediately was, "The Ukulele tuning is commonly remembered by the tune "My Dog Has Fleas."" What?
Craftsmanship: 7/10 It's alright, for being made in China. Pretty much what you'd expect for a cheap starter instrument. The grain of the wood in the body does not look as deep and rich as the picture shown, but it's not that bad. There are minor places where the quality could be improved, but it really doesn't matter, as most people are probably buying this as a cheap starter instrument anyways. Overall, the quality is much better than a toy instrument, but definitely not professional grade.

Tuning: 10/10 As far as my experience goes, all wooden instruments slide out of tune for a while. It's the nature of wooden instruments, so don't freak out when it goes out of tune an hour after you've just tuned it. Tighten the pegs with a screwdriver first, and go from there.

If you have musical experience, tuning should be a breeze. For those of you having trouble, just know that tuning any instrument is hard at first; it's not supposed to come easily. Keep practicing, and develop your ear before complaining about how broken the instrument is.
The case and ukulele are pretty much what you're paying for. I don't know how nice the carrying bag is for the ukulele they're selling without the "starter kit," but I'd say that's a much better deal. Seriously, people. By buying this over the other ukulele listed on the site will be a waste of your money. Go for the ukulele without the starter pack. It's a better deal than this. All the starter pack will get you is the same ukulele, maybe the same carrying case, a useless pitch pipe, and a sheet of paper.
