The accordion met all of my expectations. The 26 keys required a bit of adjustment from my 41 key acoustic accordion - but the trade off was no big deal. The light weight is a major plus. The accordion and orchestra sounds very realistic. Looking forward to buying the flagship model when finances permit.

Sturdy but light weight
Professional accordions are not cheap. Price for features provided is a very good value.

This is my Christmas present and I couldn't wait until Dec 25 to get started. I really like the bellows action. On a similar size acoustic accordion I can play at most four measures before running out of air, and playing with sustained basses is very challenging. On the FR-1, I can easily play eight measures with room to spare, and there is no difference when playing sustained basses. Suddenly the accordion became much easier to play. This is the best accordion investment I have made so far. I highly recommend the FR-1.
This instrument is easy to use. Separate buttons are provided for various style accordion, orchestral sounds, organ sounds, and percussions. Just push and play.
Keyboard, bass buttons, and bellows are high quality and very responsive. The sound either on headphones or when connected to my HiFi system is very impressive. I love the clarinet sound. This instrument is not just for beginning students.
Considering the price of Roland's flagship FR-7X, the FR-1 is a steal.

This is a fantastic instrument. We have two in the family. I own the chromatic button version and my wife owns the piano version. Like any electronic instrument, it must be connected to a proper audio amplifier/speaker system, and of course the volume and sound quality that you get depends on the characteristics of that system. My FR-1 will blow you out of the house on either my home HiFi system or my Roland KC-550 stage amplifier/speaker system. If you connect your FR-1 to a cheap monitor system, you will get cheap monitor sound. I am always amazed by the people who do this. What is it about the word "monitor" that they don't understand? By their very name, monitor speakers, regardless of what you paid for them, are not performance speakers. Anyway, the sampled sound quality from the FR-1 is very impressive. The various accordion sounds are truly authentic. The orchestral clarinet and sax are award winning. The organ sounds are absolutely beautiful. Indeed, these sampled sounds are of the same quality as Roland's higher models. I know this to be true because I have made side-by-side comparisons of my FR-1 with the FR-3 and FR-7. The "Alpine" accordion sound on the FR-1 is indistinguishable from the "Alpine" accordion sound of both the FR-3 and FR-7. That is true of all the sounds in the FR-1. Of course the FR-3 and FR-7 have many more sounds that the FR-1 does not have. That's to be expected. As a beginner level, amateur musician, I especially like the ease of use of the FR-1. Granted, it does not include the fancy display screen and more intuitive menu system of the FR-7. But all the features of the FR-1 are straightforward and easy to use. Besides, the default conditions are appropriate for all of my playing. A simple search on YouTube will reveal plenty of competent people at all performance levels, from world class virtuoso, like Ludovic Beier (channel: LeiloJo - check out his Tico Tico on his FR-1B), to average beginners like me, (channel: MyAccordionHistory) getting phenomenal performance out of this instrument. I have recently posted all the beginning practice pieces of the Palmer-Hughes accordion course using both my FR-1B and my wife's FR-1. I especially like the bellows action and dynamic capabilities of the FR-1. The small size and light weight are a real advantage. I am more in control and my playing is more expessive on the FR-1 than on larger instruments that I have owned in the past. There are of course the usual group who use "monitor" audio systems and who upload inferior recordings to YouTube. If you are one of them, then I recommend that you stick to acoustic instruments of the last century. But if you are of the modern world and possess average skills on today's electronic products (Personal PC, iPod, HDTV, GPS, etc), then you will find the FR-1 to be well within your capabilities and a very economical opportunity to experience the world of electronic accordions.

This is a good idea that's nowhere near fully realized. Decent sounding sampled accordions, yes; but not nearly enough output to play with an average volume band. I bought one, plugged it into a QSC8- which is a good little monitor- both at full volume, it's not loud enough for small gigs. Roland customer service pretty much said, "Yeah, we know. It's within correct dB levels, yada yada, too bad, go ahead and return it". Um... okay! The organs aren't too bad, the orchestral stuff is way cheesy, the percussion a sad wedding band joke. All that aside, tweaking this box's parameters is a long frustrating process. Overall, it's too complex for the beginners and students it's supposedly designed for (beginners with $1499.00 to toss?). Worse, its features are way too unprofessional for the average gigging musician. What a shame. It'd be so easy to get this right. Let's hope Roland decides to do so eventually. In the meantime, sadly, I'm returning mine, going back to the trusty old Hohner with a mic on it. Best of luck and success to all who read this.
