Comments about The Loar LM-500 F-Model Mandolin:

First and foremost, this is my first mandolin, though I've been playing guitar for 15 years. Therefore this review is NOT from an experienced mandolin player or from someone who has played a variety of models.

The mando looks great out of the box. Though it is foreign made, it looks like someone put some time into it, especially for the price point. The headstock inlays are gorgeous and the bindings set the instrument off just right. The finish, however, was not applied to the same standard. Though you have to look for it, the lacquer gets really sloppy and uneven in the crevices formed by the swirl on the body and the finer cuts in the headstock. I would not have expected this issue on a mid-level mando. You really have to look to notice it though, and I haven't found any blemishes on the body or any other noticeable place.

Regarding the playability, this also seems about mid range. I completely agree with the other posts that stated that the instrument really opens up after a couple of months. The one problem I keep running into is that it doesn't seem to want to fret as well as I'd hoped. I expected this to be quite tougher than on the guitar, but for some reason it seems harder to find the perfect finger placement and pressure to hit the note. This has also seemed to lessen the more I play it, so it's possible this is just my inexperience.

I am impressed by the sound and tone. Though I can't really compare to any other brands, this is one point that I don't have any issues with.

Overall, I would think it's a great buy for economy minded people who want to make a hobby of it rather than a career. I bought this more or less as a test to see whether or not I could learn the instrument and want to keep playing it. If I was buying an instrument to keep the rest of my life I would probably spring for a more expensive, American made instrument.

On a separate note, I also purchased the Musicians Friend hardshell case, which was just a hair too big for this model. Found a TKL that is just about perfect.

Great Mandolin!!!

By Martin fan

from New England

Comments about The Loar LM-500 F-Model Mandolin:

I own several Martin guitars and wanted to buy a quality mandolin for recordings, jams & gigs. This sounds and looks great. It's a bargain at this price. It took a while to get used to the thinness of the neck, but now I absolutely love it. It's hanging in my wall next to my HD28. I consider both instruments works of art and a joy to play!!!

Amazing

Comments about The Loar LM-500 F-Model Mandolin:

An incredible instrument! I love everything about it. It is beautiful,it sounds just as good as Chris Thile's dudenbostel. It plays better than any Weber I have ever played. I live near a Weber dealer so I have played quite a few. If you want a great Mandolin. Buy this one. It lives up to its name.

More bang for your buck

By Shandygaff550

from Cleveland, Georgia

Comments about The Loar LM-500 F-Model Mandolin:

Have had the Loar 500 for over a year, and with the proper set up, it can keep up with any of the Pac Rim mandolins--and quite a few domestics! Easy to play, solid woods take a little while to open up, but after a few months of regular playing this mandolin will do anything you ask. Small diameter neck, though, so big hands take a while to get used to it. Take the pick guard off, scoop the fret board and this is a winner.
