A larger ukulele with a solid mahogany body and Grover tuners.

Gretsch is famous for guitars and drums, but were also known as one of the best manufacturers of ukuleles. The Gretsch G9120-SM Tenor Deluxe Ukulele marks the return of ukuleles to the Gretsch family. It features a solid mahogany, tenor-sized body and 2-pc mahogany neck for excellent tone. The tenor has a larger body than a concert ukulele, having more volume and deeper bass tone. The easy-to-play Rosewood fingerboard has 19 frets with deluxe inlays and Grover Sta-Tite pegs to keep notes in tune. The G9120-SM comes complete with a padded gig bag.

Gretsch is proud to take players on a musical journey through nearly a century of great Gretsch history by introducing its Roots Collection of acoustic instruments. This exciting family of banjos, mandolins, resonator guitars, ukuleles and Rancher acoustic guitars feature classically authentic Gretsch designs that transport players to a bygone era well before the company made its acclaimed 1950s entry into the electric guitar world.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9120-SM Tenor Deluxe Ukulele:

I've owned the Gretsch G9120-SM for at least six months and hesitated to write a review until now. My initial impressions of the instrument were highly favorable but I was not certain I should trust first impressions and wanted to try at least two different string brands on the instrument. Initially, the Gretsch came strung with Aquila strings and produced a very punchy, compact, sound with great note separation and considerable volume. To some degree it reminded me of my Pono mahogany soprano as I've always liked the punchiness and up front sound of the Pono. Like the Pono the Gretsch has a thick neck. If that is a problem you won't like the Gretsch. I changed the strings to Galli brand and they made a significant change in the sound providing more ringing and sustain while giving me more appreciation of the mahogany "bark" of the Gretsch. As well the Gretsch is an attractive instrument. In particular I like the warm, reddish brown treatment of the mahogany wood. The ukulele was not properly set up when received but I do that work myself. Nice intonation up and down the neck and a solid player with a decent carrying bag. Nicely finished fret edges along the fretboard that needed no touch up.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Root Series G9120-SM Tenor Deluxe Ukulele:

Due to the recent popularity of ukuleles there have been many new models released recently. Bought this ukulele a few months ago after comparing price/features of many instruments. It is an excellent instrument for the price. There were setup issues to start with, however. I did not care much for the strings that came on the ukulele so I changed them for more standard strings. With either set of strings the action was too low causing significant buzzing. I took the saddle out and placed some folded paper in the slot. This and, probably, some settling of the neck, has made the action just right. The sound is loud and clear for either strumming or fingerpicking with quick decay and good tone.
