      OVERVIEW

A pick that mimics the extraordinary sound of authentic tortoiseshell.

The Clayton NuTone Standard Protein Guitar Pick was created to mimic the extraordinary sound of authentic tortoiseshell. Its unique composition produces a punchy bass with clear treble tones, making it a perfect pick for acoustic play. Its natural lubrication releases off your strings quickly and gives you the ability to produce articulate tones. Made from polymerizing, an animal protein, it is much the same as the famed, but endangered, Hawksbill Sea Turtle's shell. NuTone Protein Picks replicate the sound and feel of the Hawksbill's shell with its natural protein components, but no animals are harmed in any way by its production.

yes, i have used them all. red bear, wegen, papa's, blue chip, john pearse, and everything mass produced. i have played real tortoise shell. all claim to be, but none of the above are really like tortoise shell. some might be similar in tone, but NONE really release like the real deal. steve clayton has knocked it out of the park. smooth clear release that brings out the true tone of your guitar and strings. these my friends are the real deal! my great thanks to those folks at clayton for finally developing something that really is like tortoise shell in TONE and FEEL.

Guitarist looking for tone, these are the holy grail picks that you have been searching.Brings out tones in the instrument which no other pick available can.Release from strings is smooth.Les Paul Standard and Cutaway Les Paul are creating sounds they never had.Dweezil Zappa uses a Red Bear protein pick for playing, but for the price per pick you can buy six of these.Size is standard Gypsie Jazz.Pick does not get sweaty and hot and has very secure grip in fingers.Only the slightest effort in picking generates vibrant notes.Stongly recommended for all stinged instruments.I have medium and heavy, med feels great, but have not opened the heavy which is slightly thicker and true to size. You will notice a complete difference in sound, feel, speed.

Comments about Clayton NuTone Standard Protein Guitar Pick:

My review is for the Extra Heavy - which according to my caliper clocks in at 1.5mm (don't know why they can't just list that).

Like some other players/reviewers I have used many different picks in my lifetime: all major brands, V-Picks, Gravity, Timbertones, DuGain, Wegen, and many other regular, unique and specialty picks in all varieties of materials. I have not used a few other boutique picks like Blue Chip or Red Bear, but I know of them. And I've never played real tortoise shell. With that qualifier:

I have been using V-Picks for many years and after placing an order for some new picks decided I need to try to detox off of expensive picks. After all, most of the best and most famous guitar players in the world use regular, ordinary picks - nothing fancy - so I should be able to as well. So I bought a variety of inexpensive picks and threw one of these in the cart, just because I wanted to check it out.

Of all the picks I've ever owned, I cannot say I've been inspired by a pick before. This pick inspires me. There is an incredible, almost personal connection to the instrument. I get how crazy that sounds.

Perhaps most importantly, more than any other pick I've ever used, it is the most versatile pick across all my stringed instruments. I play electric guitar (styles ranging from jazz, pop and hip hop to extreme metal and shred), steel string acoustic, nylon flamenco, nylon classical, gypsy jazz acoustic, arch-top jazz box and bass. Normally I reach for different picks for different instruments and different applications (or fingers with the nylons guitars and bass). With few exception, that is no longer the case. This pick works incredibly well with all the above instruments. It is amazing for gypsy jazz - tons of output and bark, with enough crisp detail and clarity to makes the notes and chord speak. I would even consider using this pick on the nylon guitars as it sounds more like my fingernails than anything else I've tried (including bone/horn picks). It also has an incredible range of tone, from mellow to crisp depending on how hard to pluck - something I don't normally find or even look for in a pick. So I can play jazz notes real soft and the tone is warm and round, or I can dig in for metal riffs with great toothy effect.

Durability: the thing that drives me nuts about expensive picks is that they wear out just like inexpensive picks, even if at a slower rate - they're not indestructible. After playing this pick extensively it still looks effectively brand new. In trying to detox I used a cheaper pick for a show recently and by the end of the show the tip was completely gone, significantly worn. If this pick can outlast 12 of those then maybe the cost is ultimately equal. The only thing is I have noticed a ever so slight curve forming in the pick (barely noticeable). I've seen others write about that. I find it hard to believe that would happen to a 1.5mm pick. If it continues to happen and ends up really bent and unusable, then all my raving reviews will be for naught. But that remains to be seen.

Please pardon the long review - but for a pick at this price point, you might want to research a bit more feedback than you normally would (I know I did).

                  Cheers.

I've gone through quite a few picks in my time. These are some of the best quality that I've come across. They are a little smaller than what I'd call standard - which I prefer. Not sure if anybody cares too much, but the medium's are green.
