I have been playing Tortex for a number of years, and I thought they were the best there was. Those celluloid picks were so glossy they just slipped right out of your fingers. Tortex had a nice sort of porous texture, so it gripped your fingers. However, after an hour or so, your fingers and hands get clammy, and BAM, bye-bye Tortex pick. So I began a quest to find higher grip picks. I tried the Jazz Max Grip picks, and while those do work, they grip so bad, they're hard to position in the first place. And the small shape makes it harder to play, IMO. I had tried the typical nylon .46, but it's just too flimsy for my playing style (heavily palm muted on 12's). So when I saw these on sale, I thought I'd give them a whirl. Picks really are an inexpensive way to play around with your tone. So my first impression was WOW! They really grip your fingers! Better than Tortex. And they offer very little resistance over the strings (thus the name Ice). However they make so much clicking as they strike the strings. I went back and read the product description and realized it was right there, but I had missed that. I hate that clicking sound. Otherwise, a really comfortable pick. The heavy (1.1) gauge is pretty much the same. I honestly don't see much difference between the two.

These picks are top quality picks made by Planet Waves. The material seems to be the same as Dunlop's Tortex and similar in shape and size as the Dunlop Jazz III nylon but a bit bigger than the Jazz III. It's inbetween the Jazz III and the Jazz III XL Series. However, the similarity ends there. This pick sounds way too dark for my tone preference. That's not a bad thing at all, Jazz players will love the tone of these picks as it produces the warm, dark tones of Jazz guitar music. In my experience, it is even darker sounding than the Dunlop Tortex. The thickness I chose might've had a bit of contributing factor in the dark tone but when I compared it to an even thicker pick such as the Dunlop Ultex 2.0 mm, the Dunlop still sounded way brighter than the Black Ice pick. Jazz players take note, this is your pick! Try some and you'll love it!

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves 10 Small Guitar Picks:

For about forty years I have used a black medium teardrop Gibson pick to play rock guitar. It was perfect for my style. In fact, my style was shaped in some ways by the pick. Gibson stopped making the pick about ten years ago, right after I bought a gross of the pickups. Most of those are gone now, so I needed to find a new source for picks. After several years, I found the Black Ice and it has become a good replacement for the old Gibson picks. The medium gauge Black ice is a close match. I enjoy using heavy picks and the Black Ice Heavy and Extra Heavy picks excel in this area. The Duralin material has a slightly rubbery feel that makes it easy to grip. Also, the Duralin material is very strong and rigid. The picks last a very long time with minimal signs of wear. In my opinion, they keep their "brand new pick" feeling much longer than many competitors' products.

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves 10 Small Guitar Picks:

These picks are the best for me. The size is comparable to a Jazz III, but made of easy to grip Duralin material that I feel sounds better than the thick plastic picks. I never drop them due to loss of grip, but I also make sure that my picking hand doesn't get too sweaty during practice or shows. Overall, I prefer these to Dunlop's tortex picks, and would recommend them to a friend. I only wish I get a couple more per pack! 10/10

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves 10 Small Guitar Picks:

I purchased this product because I initially thought the "over-sized" jazz pick concept seemed interesting. Well, unfortunately the pick has hardly any support for fingers to effectively attack. In the end, its still a jazz pick. I guess I should've expected that to be the case.

I have been a Tortex user for eons and still am. Always loved Tortex Yellows. I tried a Black Ice medium a couple years ago or so and really loved the way they feel and the smaller size and continue to use them regularly. I bought the heavys this time and really love the attack and tone from them as well as the velvety feel. I will continue to use these pics, great stuff and I like the jazz shape. Thanks again MF!

Picks should be .05mm thicker, and they would be perfect. Good size, non-slip material absorbs some moisture. Picks have a tendancy to warp due to how thin they are. I buy them at 30-50 at a time. They will last about 6 months.

I've been using Jazz 3 picks for 20 + years and my bass player gave me one of these Black Ice picks to try, I loved it from the 1st time it hit the strings. It gave me a very warm smooth sound and felt every bit as good as my jazz 3 picks.
