I have been searching for a pick I could use for both picking and strumming and finally found it! For strumming my favorite pick was the original size Tortex .50 in pitch black but I found this pick slow for alternate picking so I went on a quest to find a faster pick. I purchased so many picks including the red jazz III and different sizes of V-Picks. Both the original jazz III and V-Picks were awesome for picking and played super fast but when it came to strumming and rhythm they weren't playing nice so I found myself going back to the original Tortex picks. While searching for different types of jazz III picks I stumbled upon this product by chance and it was a blessing. Since I loved the attack, sound, and flexibility for strumming of the original thin Tortex and the sharp tip of the original red jazz III for picking I figured this pick was worth a shot and boy am I glad I tried it out! I purchased this pick in the .50 size and it allows me to both strum and pick fast while giving me the best of both worlds. If all you do is strum and play rhythm then I recommend a thinner larger pick and if you simply shred then I recommend the original red jazz III or the V-Picks small pointed which glided over the strings but if you want a pick with attack which can do it all then the jazz III Tortex is my recommendation. Good luck in your search but my search has ended...

Guitar picks are unique in that you can regularly experiment with different types and styles to determine what works best for you without spending too much money. You might be looking for a certain sound, a particular feel or, in some cases I suppose, a particular look. In the end, we all end up finding something that works for us, and in my case I've settled on the Tortex Pitch Black jazz picks. I've tried nearly every jazz pick on the market," and I keep coming back to the Pitch Black in 1.14 mm. ""Feel"" is difficult to describe"," but these little dynamos are extremely comfortable to play; they almost feel ""warm"" in your fingers", and maintaining a proper grip isn't an issue - even under the most trying of circumstances. Best of all, they provide a smooth and even string release without that annoying click that you get with some of the hard plastic jazz picks. Try some for yourself and see what you think!

Comments about Dunlop Tortex Pitch Black Jazz Guitar Picks 1 Dozen:

For the longest time, I used nothing but the black "Stiffo" nylon Jazz IIIs. I liked the small size and sharp tip, but I especially liked the minimal pick attack it added to the sound (I always preferred a clearer tone, even though I mostly play metal). I get curious about other Jazz III picks though, so over time I've tried the Ultex (sounds way too clicky/chirpy), JD JazzTone 205 (great sound/feel but low durability), PrimeTone (not as nice as JazzTone and still low durability). Again, these are my thoughts on these picks for playing with distortion - for cleaner stuff, it obviously changes.

These Pitch Black Tortex Jazz picks have taken over as my usual pick for metal now. Compared to the black stiffo, this one seems to strike strings with more authority, likely because it is a tad stiffer (i'm using the 1mm). The pick attack is more aggressive - it tends to have a scratchier sound due to the material, but with a little practice in picking angles this can be controlled, and it sounds great for metal. There is a tiny bit of that chirpiness that turned me away from the Ultex Jazz IIIs, but in this case it's character-adding rather than an earsore. The playing feel takes a bit of getting used to if you're coming from the nylon ones, as the release isn't quite as instantaneous (because the material doesn't glide off the strings as easily, I think), but it isn't too different. Durability seems to be on par with the black nylons.

Highly recommended if you're a fan of the nylon Jazz IIIs and like to play aggressive stuff.

Comments about Dunlop Tortex Pitch Black Jazz Guitar Picks 1 Dozen:

This pick has a good sharp point for speed and accuracy. They are quite small in size but somehow they work well that way. Suppose we would have to ask Dunlop why that is. But I haven't dropped this pick once while playing with them, and I have large hands and fingers. I think it is a fairly specific pick though, like it might not work for hard core styles of music. Then again who am I to tell you what works for you.

Comments about Dunlop Tortex Pitch Black Jazz Guitar Picks 1 Dozen:

I've been on a (slow) quest to find a great pick while improving my picking technique -- after 23 years of playing (recording, live, bands, sessions, and some teaching). IMO, this pick will work very well for people playing 10s who want good speed and accuracy. I was using the Jazz Ultex picks before this. A great pick, though I eventually found them too round at the edges. I'm finding this thickness slightly too flexible for the guitars I have with higher tension. Overall, I consider Pitch Black picks' size and material very good for complex and detailed picking.

Feels great but I should have bought .88 rather than .73. Nonetheless, they still feel good and play well. Will probably buy the .88 at a later date.

Everyday the plectrums are in my hand because after wards of playing for 12,000 hours anyone can be a genius musician such as Tyler Swift who also loves cats.

Comments about Dunlop Tortex Pitch Black Jazz Guitar Picks 1 Dozen:

I've tried several picks over the years in an attempt to find one that's best suited to my playing style. The Tortex Pitch Black Jazz has now become my favorite. I like to play everything from jazz, to Santana lead, to funk.

I was always told to use a thicker pick to improve my soloing speed and accuracy, etc. Several of the V-Picks (medium pointed, etc.) worked great for that purpose. However, when switching to play rhythm, etc., those picks seemed a bit ungainly and stiff.

I then experimented with several of the Jazz III type picks, ultimately settling on the Eric Johnson signature pick. I liked the embossed lettering which allowed me to hold it with more confidence, and also liked the control it gave me. Still I wanted a pick that was a bit more versatile.

I finally began to experiment with the Tortex Pitch Black series. Ironically, I found the thinnest of these (.50 mm) gave me the best results. Its perfect for quick strums (funk, etc.), but also allows me to accurately pick fast licks -as I have a natural tendency to angle this pick somewhat (i.e., not quite parallel to the strings). This technique essentially mimics the attributes of a thicker pick.

Also, most other thin picks tend to develop a permanent bend or curve. The thin Pitch Black picks, although very elastic, have a great material-memory. I believe this memory is the pick's best attribute.

I bought these just to try a different pick, as I've been using the same style of pick forever (the regular Tortex Fender style). I really like them for playing fast licks. They are not for strumming!
