Alvarez

An affordable nylon string with a hand-selected solid cedar top, mahogany back and sides, and B-BAND electronics.

Artist Series classical guitars are beautifully made using a traditional Spanish heel construction. Their thoughtful bracing helps deliver sustain, balance and volume. This acoustic-electric version of the AC65 is fitted with the wonderful SYS650 blend system EQ, designed by B-BAND.

The Alvarez Artist Series AC65CE Classical Acoustic-Electric Guitar is a member of the Alvarez Artist ’60 Series. Alvarez was careful to get the construction just right to allow this series to sing, and deliver a player experience that's exceptional for a mid price instrument.

The term “solid top” of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it doesn't necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid ‘A’ grade cedar tops are hand selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

All of the components are made of natural materials such as mother of pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

SYS650 dual pickup
The Alvarez SYS650 was designed by B-BAND and is a dual pickup system incorporating one under saddle pickup and a transducer pickup placed under the soundboard. Either pickup can be selected or one can blend between the two to fine tune the response for lead, finger-picking or rhythm work. The system also has a fully chromatic, precision tuner with backlit LCD screen, 3-bands of rotary EQ, and a notch control that can be used to attenuate feedback or to shape the sound.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65CE Classical Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been using a Taylor nylon string guitar (NS72CE) since it first came out. I also play an Alvarez Yairi 12 string and an Alvarez Denver Bell banjo. I love all these instruments, But I needed a less expensive backup guitar.

I traveled miles to see an Alvarez AC65CE and was so happy to be able to test play it, I willingly paid more than Musicians Friend wants for one. No complaints.

If you are a classical guitar player, and you want the flat, wide (52mm) fret board of a true classical, one that goes only twelve frets to the body, this is your guitar.

But if you prefer a more narrow (48mm) fretboard with 14 frets to the body and a slight radius, then get the Alvarez AC65HCE instead. (My Taylor has these features.)

Classical style playing is better done on the wider, flatter, shorter board for my style of playing.

Also, the Alvarez has a real rosette. I like that.

My only negative is that the on board tuner is slow to recover. You have to silence the guitar and wait for it to reset between adjustments. I prefer to use an external tuner with a mic, then tune by ear anyway.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65CE Classical Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've played for 40+ years but just now I decided to focus on classical guitar arrangements of popular music (reading tabs). I first bought at Christmas a Washburn Solid Wood series classical guitar and I love it despite the fact the bridge failed (popped off) after two months (I did a proper reset and glue up) that guitar is light and very resonant, plays and sounds great with very decent tone woods and my own set up. Same price point as the Alvarez but no electronics no cutaway. So that is my comparison point. The Alveres is a laminate back and sides which I believe is responsible for it feeling a bit heavier. The soundboad top is decent quality red cedar. The dual transducer pickup gives a more natural sound IMO. It does have a truss rod which I didn't see in the specs. That is a plus for me because I like to tweek my action and I think it makes for a more stable reliable neck. It also has a strap button so you will not need to modify the guitar if you play standing. The sound is not as good as the Washburn but its OK though played acoustically but I'm speculating that the undersaddle transducer and the under bridge transducer detract from the acoustics when played as an acoustic instrument. That design which results in not having the bone saddle in direct contact with the wood base of the bridge is what I think influences the sound but I bought this to play live plugged in so I care more about its plugged in sound which I will say is good. You can't go wrong at this price point with this purchase so in an all balanced overview I give it 5 stars. The finish and fit is very clean and nice appointments. Set up out of the box was acceptable but I will work on the saddle and maybe replace it with a compensated classical saddle and maybe a slight tweek to the nut. The on board tuner I do not find works as well as my clip on but it is acceptable (I usually relay on my ear for the final tweek anyway)

Bought a restock item with broken tuner. Turns out that one of the pickups was broken also. Called Musicians Friend and they sent me a new one at no charge. Amazing, thank you Musicians Friend. Very empathetic and friendly staff!!! A+++++++

I have been playing an Alvarez model #AC60SC for several years. I was very pleased with the playability (after lowering the action) but never was really happy with the sound. The under-saddle piezo caused a bright or "tin" sound when I played through certain amps or house systems.

I heard about the Alvarez Artist series which uses both a UST (under saddle transducer) and an AST (acoustic soundboard transducer) as pickups. The guitar is able to blend parts of both units to produce a more mellow sound that leaves out the harsh brite tones that I had previously lived with. The sound is not as good as when you listen "unplugged". But still, it produces the best sound that I have found to date.

The price was great and the workmanship is always good with Alvarez guitars. I did change from the Savarez strings to a Thomastik-Infeld CF128 to avoid the finger squeaks and get a silky smooth sound from the bass strings. Also, I lowered the action on the guitar to suit my personal preferences.

                                Couldn't be happier.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65CE Classical Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been looking to upgrade from my Ibanez GA6 classical electric to a mid –priced classical electric with a solid top but I wasn't too happy with what I was finding in the big chain music stores. The Cordoba C5 and C7 are nice but have thinner necks than the traditional classical sized neck I prefer. The Takamine EG128EC is also nice and has a traditional sized neck but the jack input is located in the bottom of the lower bout (it doubles as a strap pin) which I find annoying as it hits my right thigh when sitting in the traditional classical position with a foot stool. I became interested in the Alvarez AC65EC when I read the specs on Musicians Friend's website. As no local stores seem to carry it, I took a leap of faith and ordered it with hope that I wasn't making a mistake. I couldn't be happier. The workmanship, playability, aesthetics, sound quality and electronics are all superb. If you are primarily a classical player and are looking for an electric classical, this guitar is for you. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. The same goes for Musicians Friend for offering this guitar and for their service and pricing.
