OVERVIEW

An affordable dreadnought with an A+ solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and versatile electronics.

Artist dreadnoughts are powerful and rewarding. Great for strumming, flat-picking and lead work. This acoustic-electric version is fitted with the fantastic L.R. Baggs Element pickup and StagePro EQ for optimal live performance.

After 50 years of making guitars, continual improvement through the use of emerging technologies, processes, and materials is still at the heart of Alvarez's culture. Alvarez guitars are constructed correctly in every sense, from raw material preparation to construction and manufacturing processes. Their tonewoods are carefully cured; components such as neck blocks and wood joints are carefully designed. The painting, sanding and polishing techniques used are continually researched and developed, and the tone is impeccably crafted and married to a stable, consistent and lively sound box.

This caring approach to development comes from one simple goal: To deliver the best guitars in the market at every price point, instruments that are truly amazing value and offer a fantastic player experience. Alvarez believes the multi-award-winning Artist Series is one of the finest solid top guitar lines in the world today and demonstrates their commitment to design.

Artist Series
The term “solid top” refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to optimize the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce balance, lively projection and great response. These components include Alvarez's FST2 bracing system, bi-level rosewood bridge, real bone nut and saddle, great quality tonewoods and thin finish.

FST2 is a forward-shifted X brace design which means the axis of the X is closer to the sound hole to create a larger soundboard area allowing for more energy and vibration to be harnessed. Both the X braces and asymmetric tone bars are carefully scalloped. The scalloping design was the result of years of continual development in their Yairi workshops. The Artist Series sound and personality is open and powerful. FST2 also creates very good balance so both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other.

Artist Series feel right and are exciting to play; no matter if you are strumming hard or picking lightly, the guitar will do what you ask of it. For a more focused sound with fewer overtones, choose a mahogany top. For power, go for Sitka. For warmth and response to a lighter touch, choose a cedar top. All of Alvarez's tops are selected by their team and graded independently of their suppliers. If it isn't deemed worthy, they won’t use it. Top quality improves as you move up the Artist Series models but all are stiff and finely grained.

Along with a more angled headstock, the Alvarez bi-level bridge increases string tension by making the break angle of the strings from the saddle to the top more acute. Improved string tension adds to the sound, feel and response, which are also heightened by the use of real bone nuts and saddles.

Artist Series also demonstrates their great finishing capabilities; the gloss models have a clear deep shine from a finish that is applied as thinly as possible, again to help optimize tone.

Superb quality on this piece! The solid Sitka top is quartersawn, okay maybe it's the hype, but this guitar is SUPER dynamic. I mean it sounds great from very soft to very loud. Touch really matters on this guy. The two way pickup is awesome! Piezo side sounds like any other piezo, the other side seems to be not so loud but with a really sharp, almost ice-picky quality on the attack of each note. As with all pieces of gear, if you just LISTEN and make small adjustments and LISTEN again you can dial up a good sound in a couple of minutes for any type of gig, from a solo fingerstyle session at your local fern bar to violent strumming with your indie post-emo thrash band.

The neck is (I assume, there's nothing on the website or packaging!!!) mahogany, and the body is laminated mahog. Neck is on the big chunky side, which I love. Frets and neck binding very good. I really like the classy understated cosmetics, with the headstock overlay, cool burst finish, abalone rosette. Looks like a much more expensive axe for sure.

In short, a great guitar and a great buy. This is an axe you can play unplugged and it will sound great. Plugging in is a real delight, and even if you don't amplify, the tuner is just an added plus. There is a spot on mine where the neck/body joint is not cosmetically perfect, but at this price, this guitar has EXACTLY what I look for in an acoustic guitar: Good sound at a reasonable price. For some reason these things sometime take a beating...

The electronics are versatile and sound very good with the two pickups in it. The on-board tuner works well. The action up around the 14th-15th fret on the lower E string has buzzing, even though I have adjusted the truss rod, trying several times to get it to go away. The cutaway is nice for playing acoustic leads, but without those particular notes, it is difficult.

I've been waiting for the perfect, mid-level guitar purchase for years now and this did not disappoint. A wider fretboard, with a lower action makes for an extraordinarily playable guitar that is adaptable to all kinds of different styles. The electronics are top notch, and I can't wait to start gigging with it!

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD60CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for 45 years (38 professionally) and have owned many electric, acoustic and electric/acoustic guitars over the years.I really love Alvarez guitars. I purchased my first one over 30 years ago and it is still one of my favorite acoustics.

I saw this AD60CE for sale as a used guitar and it was rated as a quality 2, with that definition from MF being similar to what one would find as a demo in a music store.

I purchased the guitar (which comes with no manufactures warranty) and when it arrived, I would have not described the condition as that of a demo guitar. The top was very nice, but the back of the guitar had many light scratches and rub marks on it.

And the strings were old, fraying and really unplayable. I think that on even used guitars, the folks at MF could throw on a new set of strings, especially given that there is no manufacturer warranty on the guitar. It would be a nice gesture.

Don't get me wrong. I love the guitar. It sounds great and once I put new strings on it, it played fantastic. The B-Band pickups, on board electronics and built in tuner are very nice.

MF did offer their 30 day return policy, but I'll be keeping the guitar and working on getting the light surface scratches removed. These is no way affect the playability or sound of the guitar. I just think the guitar should have been graded a bit lower.

I've been a MF customer for many years and have always been happy with the service and normally the quality and condition of items I purchase.

Got this on stupid sale day! Great Price

      By Jimi

      from Lawson, MO.

      Verified Buyer

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD60CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was looking for an acoustic/electric with a bright sound and built in tuner with an equalizer and this even has two transducer pickups for balancing the sound how you want it. Was looking at expensive name brands thinking that was the only way I could get a nice bright acoustic sound. (I like to feel comfortable playing and for the money I saved I'm not worried about scraching it or bumping it) It feels much more relaxing than playing a very expensive guitar. First Alvarez I've ever played and never thought it would sound this good. Slips out of tune a little after everytime I pick it up but with the built in tuner its no biggy. Frequent tuning is a given anyway. Very pleased for the money.

      Great Intermediate Guitar!

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD60CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This unit was great right out of the box. The action was a little high but I plan to get that adjusted and does not take away from the guitar one bit. I have been playing it every day for the last 2 weeks and it seems to play with better quality each and every time. Just like a car, you have to wear it in a bit. I am an intermediate player who was looking for a nice mid-level guitar. I am not at the playing skill to justify a Martin, Taylor, Guild etc... so this was a perfect fit and suits my needs perfectly! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quality medium level guitar as you grow in your skill level.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD60CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Well, I'm finally learning to play the guitar after 20+ years as a semi-professional pianist. I was told this was a great first guitar, without sacrificing tone or playablility. I believe they were right. I've heard a lot of guitars, from cheap to expensive, and this one is certainly not on the cheap-sounding side. The balance of the tone is actually quite stunning...not too dull, not too bright. It has an enjoyable tone that makes learning guitar fun (even for an older guy). Maybe after a few years with it, I'll be able to actually play it worthy of others hearing me!
