An affordable guitar with a hand-selected solid spruce top, Acacia koa back and sides, and warm tone.

The Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar is at the top end of the Artist Series offering. It has all the same wonderful appointments as all Artist Series models such as the advanced scalloped bracing and solid A grade tops. But the ’90 is made with Acacia Koa back and sides, which adds that something special to its tone. Warm, rounded and alive, it’s hard to put it into words but this guitar sounds incredible.

The term “solid top” of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid ‘A’ grade Sitka spruce tops are hand selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

New Artist Series guitars look stunning and all of their components are made of natural materials such as mother of pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

This is an update to my previous review (see below). Now that it is set up properly, I am loving this guitar. The strings were lowered at the nut, some frets had come loose due to humidity changes and it needed a bit of bridge work. All is good now!

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

Starting with the good - this Alvarez AD-90 is a beautiful guitar. I love the grain of the Koa and everything is well finished. I'm also very impressed with the sound. Good sustain and the mid range notes are clear and disitnct.

My complaint relates to playability. This is only my 2nd guitar and maybe I was spoiled on my first but I'm a little dissapointed in this one. I realise now that my Fender CD280S was really well set-up out of the box. In comparison, this Alvarez is very high at the nut. My fingers are killing me after only 1/2 hour. As well, there is a fair amount of buzz from about fret 10-14 on all strings. You can see a noticable deflection in the fretboard where the neck attaches to the body. I'm going to take it in to a luthier next week and if its an easy fix I'll update my review.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

You will get more than you pay for. I feel comfortable starting with that... This is a beautiful instrument (beyond what the picture shows), and its playability certainly matches its good looks.

Some adjustment was required in my case, but it arrived to me in very playable condition out of the box. In my case, the action was a bit low for my taste and buzzed at times of intense strumming, and picking higher up the fretboard.

I am happy to say that adjusting the truss rod with a hex key is a simple fix when finding your preferred action. The sound is more impressive than what I expected, and at a pleasing (not too loud/vibrant // not too soft/dull) level that allows me to comfortably experiment with all types of playing (please note that I have also not yet changed from the stock strings). It stays in tune like a dream so far, and has not given me any major trouble whatsoever. I believe I would be comfortable performing with it live as well.

In closing, I suppose I would recommended investing in a nice hardshell case (I enjoy the "Musician's Gear Deluxe Dreadnought Case [Tweed]" *perfect fit by the way*) and various other supplies to keep this beauty as pampered as she deserves.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

A Very Beautiful guitar . wondered why no one else had ever reviewed it . .It'll hang with the best of em' .
Got this one sight unseen ( something I usually do not do ,as have had a couple BAD Guitars arrive from other dealers in the past ) But I know alvarez Quality, and this is no exception . Very happy with the quality Tone, playability right out the box , Perfect set up , altho recently discovering the DR Rare Phospore Bronze 11-50s, I'll likely change to those strings, they have a super easty play and chime like no other string i've ever heard . Was on Sale over holiday is reason i picked it up saving almost $100 .I Also have AD411 which is very nice . The Alvarez fingerboard has a very nice curved radius, something I Found some Yamahas 700 series do not making them more difficult for me to play . I've been playing over 40 years all acoustics and have owned over 60 guitars. What I find is the guitars they are making these days for $400 rival American made guitars I've had in the past costing a thousand or more and seem better made , and sound alaot better. May be better string quality today also , much more choices now.
                Great Quality
Extremely good value . I never use inboard electronics, always Markley hummbucker in the sound hole with an external eq and sounds great . I Never cared for piezos ever.
