OVERVIEW

An affordable guitar with a hand-selected solid spruce top, Acacia koa back and sides, and warm tone.

The Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar is at the top end of the Artist Series offering. It has all the same wonderful appointments as all Artist Series models, such as the advanced scalloped bracing and solid A grade tops. But the AD90 is made with acacia koa back and sides, which adds that something special to its tone, making it warm, rounded and alive.

This Artist Series AD90 is considered a "solid top" which refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each Artist Series AD90 is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid 'A' grade Sitka spruce tops are hand-selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and it's no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

These Artist Series guitars look stunning and all of their components are made of natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

I can't believe how incredible this guitar is! Alvarez, your quality continues to baffle me. This guitar has such a beautiful tone and the intonation is infallible. The acacia koa back and sides adds a gorgeous touch to the aesthetics of the guitar, and it sounds better than it looks. If you want to hear a sample of the sound I have a video up on youtube just search for 'Alvarez AD90 Sound Test' and you'll see. Unbelievable value!!

Starting with the good - this Alvarez AD-90 is a beautiful guitar. I love the grain of the Koa and everything is well finished. I'm also very impressed with the sound. Good sustain and the mid range notes are clear and disitnct.

My complaint relates to playability. This is only my 2nd guitar and maybe I was spoiled on my first but I'm a little dissapointed in this one. I realise now that my Fender CD280S was really well set-up out of the box. In comparison, this Alvarez is very high at the nut. My fingers are killing me after only 1/2 hour. As well, there is a fair amount of buzz from about fret 10-14 on all strings. You can see a noticable deflection in the fretboard where the neck attaches to the body. I'm going to take it in to a luthier next week and if its an easy fix I'll update my review.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

This is my second Alvarez. The first one was a Regent series with a laminated top. Not a bad guitar, but the AD90 is definitely a big step up. The finish on the one I received is flawless and the woods used are beautiful. The sound from the solid spruce top is much richer with a longer sustain. The neck is slightly wider and the action is a little lower, making it more comfortable to play. I grabbed this one on sale from Musician's Friend for two seventy using their sale price and a 10% off coupon. I consider it a steal compared to other brands I could buy new for this price.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

Just felt time to upgrade and found this little jewel. It was being promoted for the holidays so I got a nice discount on top of the dicounted price so I feel like I got a steal. The minute I took it out of the box, I could feel this was a well constructed, quality instrument. Immediately went and tuned and only needs minor adjustments . Experienced just a little buzz but made adjustment and now good to go. Looking forward to many years of enjoyment with this guitar.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

First off this guitar was well made and eye candy. few flaws and the tuning and intonation was good.
But this is clearly not a Taylor although it is midrangy in sound. It lacks the artificial highs of the Taylor. The Wood is similar to maple in tone more flat and uncolored in sound. This is not a Martin either. It sounds good but lack the warm overtones of a Martin. But it is not a bad guitar and clearly a nice first guitar

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

Bought this as a temporary replacement for my roadworn '75 Yairi DY57 Signature which needs a bridge reattachment (after 40 years and still covered under warranty). The build on this new Alvarez is impeccable. Aesthetics are subtly understated with no dot inlays on the fretbaord. On the one I received the sides and back were a dark rosewood color and not as pictured. It feels like an old friend after playing the Yairi for 40 years. Same telemetry as the Yairi -- I prefer its wider nut and slightly curved radius -- and even hand sculpted bracing for tone balance. This is actually the first acoustic I've had out of several dozen in all price ranges that the intonation was dead on all the way up the neck, the action felt good, and the frets were well polished, level, and consistent. No rework or adjustment needed whatsoever. Tone and projection is somewhat subdued but well-balanced. If you are looking for a loud bright jumbo-like sound, you should definitely look elsewhere. Hard to believe this is MIC. Like most Asian guitars, the woods feel young and tight -- though carefully selected and flawlessly beautiful -- and I expect it will take a few years for it to really reach its full voice. I'll put this up against any Martin or Taylor as far as build quality and playability goes. Smartest STOD I've done.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

Having read an article where this was a top 5 guitar without having to spend an arm and a leg, I researched the other four and compared reviews and was sold on the AD90. While I am pleased with my Ibanez AEL20, I desired an acoustic guitar with a richer and fuller sound, and the AD90 did not disappoint. It did require a set-up, as some buzzing occurred at the second fret.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

This guitar is very well constructed, sturdy, and even set up very well, maybe a little too well. It's the first guitar I've ever had that I had to back off truss rod. Truss was not very tight, but action was very close with stock strings which I think are lights. I replaced them with mediums, still had to relax the neck and it plays wonderfully all the way around. I actually am a Martin person and wanted to try Koa without a huge investment. I actually prefer this over a D16 martin I have but will be selling because of the plactis bridge and fingerboard. This alvarez is a sweet smooth playing guitar. My only complaint is the guitar I received and the one pictured appear different. There is only a glimps of the sides which leads you to believe that its a medium to light coffee colored wood which it is not. It may be originally but my guitar has a stain which I'm not crazy about which makes it look like fake mahogany. It is all wood and a super guitar, the stain is cosmetic but it's kind of like making it almost to the finish line then laying down. The guitar was well designed, built with care and then a sloppy stain on the rear and sides. It's very dark and obviously not the color of the real wood underneath. I expect it to last a lifetime or two, maybe as the finish wears off in 30 years it will look better. That's it. I will keep the guitar.

This guitar is heavy duty and built for medium strings.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

Pretty new at this guitar business...but trying hard. Have couple of other really good guitars, a Seagull and a Teton. Love them both, but....this Alvarez is gorgeous and the tone is incredible. I really am in awe of it and just love holding it and admiring the craftsmanship. Design of the guitar says "understated elegance" to me and sound is a joy to my ears. Get this guitar if you are looking for a really fine and beautiful instrument and can't shell out a couple of grand for a Martin, Taylor or Gibson. Won't be disappointed. Someday I plan to own one of those fine guitars as well.

This guitar has immediately become my favorite to play. I like the look of it, it looks better even than the pictures. The contrast of woods is beautiful and the hardware is solid. Its sound really fills the room. I think it will be suitable for recording and playing live after I find a pick-up for it. My experience with Alvarez has always been positive, and this is no exception. I consider this a professional level guitar at an extremely fair price!

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90 Dreadnought Guitar:

For what I paid I got exactly what I expected. The amazing thing is after playing on it for several hours I noticed that it started to really open up the sound. I've had it plugged into a tonerite machine (that causes the tonewoods to vibrate and open up) and now it sounds so much better. Playing this instrument blindfolded I would've paid three times the amount.

It has characteristics of a maple back and sides guitar. You're not going to get a lot of depth and richness out of the low-end but it is crystal clear focused and has a nice tone.
