OVERVIEW

An affordable guitar with a hand-selected solid spruce top, Acacia koa back and sides, and warm tone.

The Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar is at the top end of the Artist Series offering. It has all the same wonderful appointments as all Artist Series models such as the advanced scalloped bracing and solid A grade solid tops. But the AD90CE is made with acacia koa back and sides, which adds that something special to its tone. Warm, rounded and alive, it' hard to put it into words but this guitar sounds incredible. This acoustic-electric model is fitted with the outstanding SYS550 blend system EQ with chromatic tuner.

The term œsolid top of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it does not necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid ˜A™ grade Sitka spruce tops are hand selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

New Artist Series guitars look stunning and all of their components are made of natural materials such as mother of pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

SYS550 Pickup
The SYS550 designed by B-BAND is a pro-level EQ and pickup that reproduces the sound of the guitar very closely with great clarity. B-BAND uses a patented under saddle electret film pickup which eliminates synthetic or processed sounds often heard with Piezo or other styles of pickup. The result is a very true, acoustic sound. SYS550 also has an accurate, backlit chromatic digital tuner..

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been waiting for this guitar to come down in price for years. I own a Yairi and a regent single cutaway electric and a Alvarez masterworks acoustic which is fantastic sounding and brilliant to play, among other wonderful axes.
This is a good guitar but not solid wood. It sounds good but not exceptional and that is not what i would expect. It is a good guitar for jamming or gigs but not your collector guitar. The Masterworks Series is great but this artist series is good and less money for a goods instrument. I do recommend this but it is no Martin nor Guild. It did sound better than my tak, seagull, Ibanez, and epi in the same price range. So I sold them. Personally I like the masterworks series but this is a good instrument.

It's Growing On Me

Pros

  • Good sound

Cons

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this on sale in June 2015 to become my new travel guitar. I play weekly, but have a nice Takamine that I use for that. This is to be my travel guitar.

Upon delivery, and my first chance to examine it, I noticed that everything looked okay, with one exception. The neck has a satin finish and the body has a gloss finish. On the cutaway side, where the gloss finish ends and the satin finish begins, there seems to be a noticeable edge, meaning the first time I felt it I thought it was a crack in the joint. I held it up to the light and determined that it was simply the edge of the gloss. I decided it was something I could live with because I liked the sound and it didn't affect playability.

Initially I was very impressed with it's unplugged projection. Then, I decided to give it a shot in a live setting. Granted, I am accustomed to playing a guitar that's worth twice as much, but it was not a good experience. The sound from the guitar seemed to die immediately, making me reconsider it's ability to naturally project. Add to the experience that the channel was set for my other guitar, and we had to make significant volume increases to get back to a working volume coming through the sound system. I have replaced the battery that came with the guitar and will try it again to see how it works.

Just a few notes to keep in mind: at the date of this writing, the picture and description on the MF website are both off a little. The picture is of a different guitar, not the AD90CE. The description says the guitar has a B-Band SYS650, which it does not have. It has the step below, the SYS550. If you're looking into buying this guitar, go to the Alvarez site to see the specs.

Also, this guitar does not fit in the Silver Creek Dreadnaught case. It's hard to explain.

Ultimately, I'm not giving up on this guitar. It's gorgeous. It has the features I'm looking for. The price was right. But I don't see it becoming a guitar I cannot live without.

    Alvarez AD90CE Very Comparable

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased AD90CE on sale after buying the AD90 and realizing the build and material quality. I own 1940 Gibson J35, Gibson J-15, Martin D-15, Martin HD-28, and the two Alvarez mentioned. These guitars are comparable with Gibson and Martin guitars $1500 and up. They actually exceed because the others cost $2000+ to get bone nut and saddle which these are factory equipped. If you can't afford the USA brands and don't mind the name, these are great quality and build.

I did however change to a wood pick guard.

    Very good for the price

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I own a nice Larrivee guitar. I wanted a guitar with electronics that was less expensive that I wouldn't mind getting beat up at a gig. This guitar fits the bill. The all-wood construction makes for a really good sound. There are some finish imperfections on mine--especially some sloppy glue application inside the guitar, an obvious application of filler on a small spot on the neck's thumb side, and a bit of a weird bump pretty high up the neck on the thumb side. These issues would make me reject a more expensive guitar but not a guitar at this price point. I have to admit that these issues don't really affect playability.

One thing I really don't like is that, while there are fret markers on the sides, the only fret marker on the fingerboard is at the 12th fret. This makes it a bit harder to play with people.

Overall, this is a very good guitar for the price. I ordered this and a more expensive guitar through Musicians Friend in the same week; this one was the keeper on all levels.

    Alvarez AD90CE

    Ask me a question

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar as I had owned an Alvarez before. To make this short I'm going to cut to the chase. The first and then the second guitar both had the same problem and both were returned. The bridge pickup would not pick up the 1 and 2 strings. A letter to Alvarez went unanswered to date.

You Can't Go Wrong With Alvarez!

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AD90CE Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have owned a lot of guitars in my life. I have owned:
    Gibson Les Paul Custom
    Alvarez 12 String
    Alvarez Curly Maple 6 string
    Epiphone Dot
    Guild Classical
    Vintage Fender Telecaster
    Handmade Lagejans Walnut W-6
    Yamaha RGZ Electric
    Ibanez 6 string acoustic electric
    and many others.

So, I know a great guitar when I play one. This is my 3rd Alvarez and I am thrilled with it! Not only is it gorgeous, the tone is full and the harmonics ring loudly. When I was shopping for this guitar purchase, I tried a lot of guitars like Taylors, Breedloves, Seagulls and Takamines. I have to say that the sound quality from this guitar at the 600 price range blows the 900 Taylors away and it looks 10 times better!

The electronic tuner is great too. It has the analog needle style display instead of those stupid LEDs. You can get the instrument tuned right on the money easily although the harmonic intonation is so good that you don't need it.

In my opinion, no guitar comes from the factory with the proper setup but after I did a setup on this guitar it plays so beautifully and easily that I was blown away. New strings and the tone was so amazing that I just couldn't put it down.

I have not seen a guitar on the market at this price that plays and sounds near as good. I really think you would have to spend well over a thousand to get an equivalent instrument. Yes, I am a fan of Alvarez guitars but how could I not be? I had a 12 string for about 8 years and never had to adjust the neck. That is almost unheard of.

While my handmade Langejans will always be my favorite, my Alvarez AD90CE is a firm second in my acoustic guitar collection!
