Solid mahogany back and sides of the MF80C work with the Englemann spruce top to generate a very round, warm sound. Master-quality cosmetics include maple body binding and an abalone rosette. I was looking for an acoustic guitar that would sound great unplugged, but with built-in electronics, that would be comfortable to play. Based entirely on my past experience with an Alvarez guitar, I bought the MF80C. The Alvarez hype says that the Masterworks series is built not just to be played but to inspire performance and I have to say, this guitar delivers. It not only feels good to play, the notes sing like I've never heard on a guitar. I've played Martin's, Taylors, Gibsons and while they all have something going for them, this little Alvarez inspires me to play more than any guitar I've touched in a long time. Not a lot of bass (or mud for that matter) and not hugely loud but you can lean into it or play with a light touch and it sounds great. Fast, matte finished neck and warm, even tone. This would be a great guitar for a singer/songwriter who plays in and out of a mix. Probably not great for a soloist who needs all the dynamic range a dreadnought could produce. The built-in tuner works just okay but the electronics sound good and blend nicely with the acoustic tone. Came with Elixir's on it, which was nice.
I've personally tried many different Martins and Taylors (consider myself more of a Martin person), and I was looking into buying myself a professional quality guitar as I'm going that way. For the money, this guitar definitely competes with a 3 series or 1500 dollar martin. I personally am falling more and more in love with the sound each day, and see this as being my weekly guitar for many years to come. Some minor things need to be adjusted, but I consider that half the fun of owning an acoustic.
This Alvarez Masterworks Series MF80C is my last stop on my lifelong quest for a great guitar. I have owned Martins, Taylors, Guilds and others over the last 30 years but none seemed to have that perfect fit of quality, tone and balance. This guitar fits like a glove, plays effortlessly and gives me everything I want in a quality instrument. Inspiration comes easy when the instrument is not in the way. If this guitar were priced at ten times it's selling price, it would be worth it. I believe I have found the guitar for the rest of my life.
