Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

All Alvarez guitars are well made. This is a Regent, but fit and finish are more reminiscent of an Artist. MOP and abalone shell are pretty and well done. Binding is smooth and even. Sound is full for a small body. Be aware, a small body may drop some range, usually base and tenor extremes. Also, when hard driven, will become muddy. But, played lightly or finger style, it responds well and the entire body vibrates! Action is low and the neck is close to an electric in thickness and contour. It is very comfortable and easy to play, even for arthritic hands! This is my first folk size, but I am well pleased. This is my fourth Alvarez, and I have owned two for 30+ years! No regrets!

Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I had hoped the Rosewood back and sides would boost the lows and volume for a folk sized guitar. Instead it seemed to eliminate the mids. The tone is muddy on the bottom and too punchy on the top, with little in between.

I may have received a dud, but the nut was filed too deep and wide for light strings (12's), especially at G and B. This threw off the intonation and harmonics (and maybe was the problem with mid-range tonality). It is a fine beginer guitar, but I didn't feel like it was worth spending more to get it set up properly, so it went back.

5-stars to Musicians Friend customer service. Quick and easy to deal with and exchanged for something better (and, to be fair, a little more expensive).

Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I purchased this guitar for a relative who wanted to start playing. I was looking for a Washburn or Yamaha and upon calling, I was directed to the Alvarez. Sure glad I was. This guitar seems better than them in every way. The set up of the guitar was perfect, with nice, light action and a good bridge and nut for the price. Very nice tone and very playable. Hard to believe that a guitar at this price can sound and play as well as it does. It produces rich, warm lows and bright, crisp highs. The mid tones can get lost somewhat, but again for the price, this sounds great. I think the tones are similar to my Seagull S6 which cost much more than this guitar.

Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar to use outside (i.e. hiking, campfires, the lake)without worries of dings and scratches; however, after receiving it and seeing the finish, I'm a little reluctant. Nevertheless, this is a great guitar for what I bought it for, also it would make a perfect beginner guitar.

Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I snagged this guitar with a cybermonday deal, and I am BLOWN AWAY by the value. Sure, it's a laminated top, but it's incredibly resilient. It is a perfect guitar for big kids, middle schoolers, ladies, or anyone with small hands because while the guitar is full size, the shape and scale are just a little smaller/shorter. Also great as a beater or campfire guitar since it's a little smaller but still full size.

The attention to detail and quality control is excellent. The neck, fretboard, frets, bridge, and tuners are reminiscent of a much higher price point. The sunburst is very tasteful. I ALWAYS recommend a setup, but I gave it a two-minute neck tweak out of the box and the guitar was perfectly playable with spot-on intonation.

About the tone. I wasn't expecting much from a small-bodied laminate, but for the price point it was wonderful. It was balanced and loud and had excellent sustain. I would imagine that in just a couple months of playing it would open up quite nicely.

If you can get over the fact that it's laminate (and will therefore be more resilient) this could be a fantastic guitar for you!

Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

I have always played mahogany acoustic guitars. The only time I played rosewood guitars was at music stores. I found the sound brighter with rosewood than mahogany, but found the price prohibitive. This is the first time I found a rosewood guitar in my price range, so I bit! I mostly just practice now days, but I have a consistent acoustic gig on Saturdays. I tried it at the gig at the breakfast I play every week, but felt it was too loud and was a distraction to the people who enjoy the music in the background while they chat, so I went back to using the mahogany guitar. This is quite a compliment to this guitar! I enjoy practicing with it at home. If I played at a gig where I was on stage, front and center, this guitar would definitely be the one I would take :-)

Comments about Alvarez Regent Series RF270 OM/Folk Acoustic Guitar:

very beautiful, much more so than the pics show. I cleaned and conditioned the fretboard, polished the frets, installed a bone saddle, cleaned up the underside of the bridge plate, removed the black pick guard, put on new strings and adjusted the truss rod, and now it plays and sounds much better. Some interesting harmonics going on at different areas on the fret board, of course it doesn't compare to any of my Martins or Taylor in sound, but quality is quite nice, and looks are excellent. SDOTD price was the deciding factor to pull the trigger.
