Overall, an excellent value. I've never had a bad deal from Musicians' Friend.
Just got my AE128 in. I took it out of the box and tuned it up, and although it's a shallow-body, it had a good sound for dry practice and rehearsal...which is not what I need it for.
I plugged it in to a small bass amp, and, yeah, the good reviews I'd read on this were all true. I can elicit most any sound I like, from warm folksy, to Willie Nelson buzzy piezo...and the gain on the amp gave it a rugged electric guitar sound. Soundwise, on a scale of 1-10, I give it a great Spinal Tap 11.
For years I'd avoided getting an Ovation or Applause because of the round body...all of the ones I'd used were uncomfortable. This one being shallow, it's a bit better than all the others I'd played, and I'll simply have to get used to it...which is worth it for the excellent(!) playability and (oh!) the sound.
I'm not a brand-name snob. I've been playing for 40-years, much of it semi-professionally. This is by far the best acoutic-electric I've ever put my hands on...more than enough "bang for the buck."

The AE128 is a nice looking guitar, but lacks tone. Unplugged the tone is very thin due to it's super-shallow bowl. Plugged in it is harsh and trebly. I had to use it with an acoustic modeler to get anything close to a decent tone.Support from Ovation is virtually non-existent, unless you take it to an authorized dealer within the warranty period. There is not even an Ovation/Applause sponsored forum. Most guitar shops, even authorized dealers, do not stock parts...not even a bridge saddle, which is a proprietary design, and a standard saddle cannot be used (different underside). The action on mine was too high, even after removing the factory installed shim.I would strongly recommend a different guitar. There are many available at or near this price point from Musician's Friend, as well as others.

Comments about Applause AE128 Super Shallow Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
I had a shipping error, the product I order was in ship to a different location and in a different state as well. I contacted Musician's Friend. They told me they would check on it and get back to me, at this point I thought I would never hear from them again, I was wrong on all accounts. I received a reply the same day. They were tracking it down then I was told they would get back to me? Well to make a long story short, I can't tell you if they ever got the original order returned to them but I received my order by the end of the week. I can't say enough good thing about these folks!

Comments about Applause AE128 Super Shallow Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
The guitar looked good at first glance. Let it warm up and I tuned it. When playing on upper neck the tone was good but a bit high due to shallow back. As i played the lower neck i noticed how far away the string were from the fret board. I then plugged it in and messed with the eq. The sound was nasty and the g string was not even picked up by the pick up and there was no balance of gain with any string. Tried adjusting sound but it just got worse. I started looking closer and found several sharp edges around neck and where body met top. Even a closer look made me think the nice looking wood was a foe finish. I may be wrong but it looked like a photo glued to the wood if there was even wood there. Totally disappointed and not the Ovation quality I was used to. I have seen $99 guitars better then this. Not even a kids toy. Musicians friend was great to take it back and gave me the same discount on a real Ovation I am currently waiting on. Hope this one is good. The strings were the best part of this unit.

Comments about Applause AE128 Super Shallow Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
I picked this guitar up used. I figured before I bought it that I would have to put some better tuners on it, compensate and file the saddle and maybe even a little fret filing like Ive read a few others do. But I must say that the tuners are great. They are better than anything I would have bought to put on it. I had to put some new strings on mine when I got it and overall it played pretty good. I knew that it being a shallow back that it wouldnt be very loud unplugged and I was right. Im not crazy about the sound unplugged but its not terrible, when I plug it in, it did suprise me a little with how good it sounded. Maybe a little unbalanced, even with the controls, but overall pretty good. I play alot of lead and I can access the upper frets better on this guitar than any other acoustic electric Ive ever played. I still may file the saddle a little to make it play a little better. When I do that this thing will play better than some electrics. Overall its a solid guitar and for the money, its not bad. I will gig with it
Goold solid guitar. preamp and wood are good, tuners are alot better than expected.

Comments about Applause AE128 Super Shallow Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
This was my very first guitar ever. I have had it for about 10 years. As other reviews said, it is extremely durable and can take a lot of bumps. The only downfall is the hole in the middle isn't supported enough so it caused the guitar to bow slightly which then raises the action and makes it that much harder to play. Maybe I have the old version and they fixed it, but I guess ask around. Mine was perfectly kept in room conditions it's whole life and never left outside. I know the bridge is fine but i'll probably mess with the tension rod and throw some new strings and see how it plays. Maybe my case was rare, otherwise great guitar even when plugged in!
Comments about Applause AE128 Super Shallow Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
I purchased this guitar pretty recently and i have to say its one of the best acoustic's ive played, at least in this price range anyways. I can play a lot of different styles on this thing and the thin body doesnt effect the sound at all it sounds great, its about the same quality as a $500 dollar alvarez at less than half the cost, the finish is beautiful, neck feels good and the roundback body is good for sitting down when you are playing and the inlay around the soundhole gives it a lot of aesthetic touches so all in all I love this guitar and i would recommend it to anyone
Comments about Applause AE128 Super Shallow Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
Over the years, I have owned several different entry level acoustic/electric guitars and they were just that. This is by far THE best acoustic guitar that I have been able to play, not only own. The fit and finish on the AE-128 is exceptional for an inexpensive guitar. The quality exceeds the low price, so don't overlook this model if you're looking for a new inexpensive guitar.
