I have very mixed feelings about this guitar. Over all this guitar gets very average marks. However, it does have the potential to be a monster axe. The B. C. Rich Mockingbird Pro X Custom with some tweaks could easily become your No. 1. Full disclosure I am a huge Mockingbird fan, I have a Mockingbird tattoo. But it is going to take some work before I am a fan of the Pro X Custom.

Let's talk about the pros of this guitar first. The B. C. Rich Mockingbird Pro X Custom is a beautiful guitar. Today we are reviewing the trans red mahogany guitar with a gorgeous quilt maple top. Adding to the esthetics are a bound body, neck and headstock. The binding work is meticulous with very tight seams.

The 24 fret neck has slick diamond inlays along it's rosewood fingerboard. The neck is set with a very smooth flat joint that gives easy access to the upper frets.

The bridge is a more that serviceable Floyd Rose special. The Floyd came well setup and intonated nicely. The action was a tad too high for shred but more that low enough for the majority of players. An easy enough to fix issue. This is about where this guitar stops shining.

The first disappoint with this guitar is the tuners. They look nice enough one quick turn of the tuners confirms looks can be deceiving. I could feel a bit of play in the tuners before the gear would engage. This was not in one tuner but a characteristic in all in the set.

The disillusion continued when plugging in the guitar. The active B.C. Rich active humbuckers leave a lot to be desired. They are thin sounding and lack luster. Knowing the audience of this guitar, these pickups are not going to get you kids the high gain tones you are searching out. Popping the pickups in the middle position to get a bit more bottom gave me more bass. It also resulted in a huge lack of string definition. I am not a fan of active pickups. What surprised me was I don't think active pickup fans will be too happy with the tone of this guitar.

When purchasing this guitar I knew the active electronics would be gutted. There is a high gain prototype alnico 6 waiting to be placed in this beast. What I didn't know then but I do know now is the tuners will also have to be upgraded. With a few upgrades this will be a fantastic guitar. However it is very average out of the box.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

Three Ninety Nine is about what these guitars are at all worth, don't ever pay more, they aren't worth it. They are far from fine instruments, and aren't good for anything more than shredding. The stock pickups are complete junk...I replaced mine with a Zakk Wylde EMG set and it woke up the tone. Its an ultra-shredder now, but trying to get any other type of tone out of it (even before the PU change) is impossible. It just wants to rock and that's it. A good guitar for metal/hard rock, but realize its a one trick pony.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

This is my first BC Rich so I was not sure what to expect. The shape was a concern but I gave it a chance anyway.

    First the pro's:

Out of the box it looked great. Set-up was fine and all it needed was tuning.
The shape fits me to a tee. It sits just right. It is perfect for me.

Other reviews mention fret buzz but none on mine.

The middle pick-up setting is interesting. Both volume and tone controls work on the middle selection and are very responsive. I now use the middle position for most everything. There is so much more control over the tone versus just the bridge pick-up or just the neck pick-up. Of course there is always the bite of the bridge pick-up or the bottom end of the neck pick-up with just a flick of the switch.

All hardware looks good and the chrome shines.

The finish is flawless and the white binding on the gloss black really sets it off. The frets are finished quite nice.

    The cons:

No paperwork was included. No instructions about the Floyd Rose, no warranty card, no set up or maintenance instructions. For a new player this could be an issue.
The odd shape makes it a challenge to set it in a regular guitar stand. Because of the balance of weight you must be careful when setting the guitar down. A guitar stand with a neck holder would help.

All in all the guitar is a hands down winner and gets 4 and 1/2 bangs on the Banger scale. It did not get a perfect 5 because of the of the missing paperwork.

If this baby is calling you to take it home you won't be disappointed.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

Now listen, a simple neck adjustment is needed for fret buzz. The buzz usually happens during shipping and is caused by temp changes. There are many you tube videos on how to do this, if you don't want to do it on your own, take it to your local music store where they most likely will have someone there who can do the adjustment for you. Remember Fret Buzz is not a defect....you all need to learn how to set up your guitar, very handy to know. Cheers...........

Until this year I have been a U.S.A. made snob. This guitar plays just as well if not better than some I have owned for twice the money. Only weak spot is the electronics. You can tell the tone is there. I think a set of Duncans will complete the package.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

Fit and finish on this guitar is flawless, I looked it over very carefully and found absolutely nothing wrong with it. Most of the time I can find something to complain about but not this time. The setup out of the box is perfect with nice low action and no fret buzz anywhere on the neck. This is guitar number 20 for me and of the 7 purchased online this is the 2nd one that did not require at least some work, All it needed was a quick tuning. The pickups sound great, I am very surprised by just how nice this guitar looks and how well it sounds and plays.
The pickups sound good clean and have a nice punch to them when using the overdrive channel.
I have been playing for 45 years now and have acquired 10 tube amps over the years so I'm not judging this guitar using a practice amp.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar as a "Deal Of The Day" and the first one that came had a broken horn on it and was obviously a used guitar, but they refunded my money quickly so I could buy another and trusted me to send the other back. 2 days later a "Perfect" one arrived and I have been satisfied ever since. If you have the money opt for the "Pro-X, Not Pro-X Custom as the quality is just that bit better to a professional who is very hardware picky. I use this guitar to just jam and have fun on and like dive-bombing with the Tremelo. There is nothing negative to say about the guitar itself, but you will need a setup as BC Rich sucks at giving you a guitar ready ton play out of box.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

This Guitar came with everything needed and set up for playing straight out of the box with very little tuning needed. I immediately found that the guitar was slightly lighter than I expected, and was extremely comfortable. The fret buzz is an easy fix. The pickups appear to be slightly weak with little bass, but decent for this guitar (May be difficult to get that deep heavy sound and those screaming harmonics, that I would figure this guitar would be chose for). The finish seems slightly darker than seen on here, but I feel it suits the guitar a little better and the chrome finish matches beautifully. The tuning knobs engage slightly after they had been turned, but not so bad that it would become annoying. I was surprised that mine came with a calendar though? The Floyd Rose Special doesn't seem to have the same tuning and other problems that I have had and experienced in the past with the sinister gates custom and I feel that the Floyd rose would be difficult to the players without any experience about it. I found it to be one of the best guitars I have had the pleasure of playing so far. I didn't like the fact that it came without any papers such as: warranty card, receipt(receipt is emailed to you), or instructions. Bottom line is that this guitar is an absolute beauty, and will I will never grow tired of this guitar. It is made for absolute shredding and I will suggest this guitar for anyone looking for a great addition to their arsenal.

This guitar was what I expected and more. It sounds great, and I love the Floyd Rose system, you can really crash the artificial harmonics. Tuning is not as simple anymore, but that is to be expected with this setup. Not a good beginner guitar, but a great guitar all around. I got the flat black with gold trim, and it looks really sharp.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

Bought this axe not knowing what to expect. I was really looking into the Jackson pro series but saw these guitars came at a better price and denser wood, mahogany. Right of the bat I gotta say the paint job is excellent, as well as the body cut and head stock cut and inlays. I got the trans red and the paint job is right up there with really high end guitars such as the ESP NT lines. However I was a bit disappointed with some of the construction, such as the slotted nut had dents and bangs in it as well as the floyd rose. Don't know if this was from shipping or installation. Korean made blah blah, I have a Jackson Dinky from Korea, same price, and the construction is way better on the Jackson. It took some hefty adjustments to get the Floyd Rose floating correctly and to get rid of fret buzz, but when it was finally locked in this guitar turned out to have really great feel. The neck is just perfect for blistering metal.
As for the pickups, well they sound terrible to me. They are active pickups but not high-gain active pickups. They sound bassy, although if you have a high gain amp they will retain clarity with surprisingly no hum. I put in an AHB-1(the stock wiring work was decent) and the tone sounded a hundred times fuller and denser with richer harmonic content. Would I buy another BC rich? Probably not, but I would recommend this guitar to metal heads looking for a war machine in the intermediate price range. With proper pickups, it's tone is right up there for playing brutal metal/grind with the Jacksons, LTDs, Ibanez, and at a better price with a unique look, although a bit weaker construction.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

If your reading this then you seen what I did, A thing of beauty. I must say that they built this with the looks being NO.1.It does not stop there with a neck thru body and a battle tank for a bridge. Headed off by active pickups with independent volume and tone for each one for perfect blending of your tones. It would be very hard to find a better deal at this price anywhere. I did find the strap knob on the top cut away in the back threw the balance of the guitar off, I know some guitars are made like this but I hate it and have moved this under the top cut away to bring it back into balance, ( don't do this if you don't know what your doing )I am sure they did this just for the looks. I also found that the intonation was out on all the strings by a lot and have redone the bridge and have upgraded to a 10-46 set of strings and tightened up the springs to make up for the change. don't let the changing in the bridge scare you every guitar I have bought has had to have the intonation set and I recommend you have a music store you trust and have it set and you will be glad you did, this guitar plays as well as it looks and I would suggest it to everyone. This is one well built guitar and you will be proud to own it and play it, and one that can be seen from across the room and the envy of all your friends wanting to play it.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

After receiving two Epiphone Explorers that were flawed... 1st one had a crack in the neck, second one needed a fret level job real bad! I decided to go with another BC Rich! (Musicians Friend replaced them both times with no hesitations). I have about 15 of them. Ranging from USA custom models down to the reproduction of the Gunslinger..... Each and every one of them has always exceeded my expectations!
The mockingbird plays great after a few small tweaks to the set up.. I tune a half step flat, so a little spring adjustment, neck tension adjustment and lowered the action... BAM, plays and stays in tune perfectly!
The pickups are very good, but not as powerful as the EMG 81/85 configuration that I have in some of my other guitars. I prefer passive electronics, but I also enjoy my guitars having their own characteristics. For that reason, these pick ups will remain in the guitar. If they all play and sound the same, why have a bunch of guitars, right? Anyhow, thumbs up to BC Rich for continuing to make quality that I can count on!

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

Picked up the Trans Red version. The Floyd Rose was setup perfectly right out of the box. Plugged into the tuner, tuned up and started playing right away. This guitar plays in tune, even through dive bombs. I can rail on the whammy bar and it comes right back in tune ready for the next song.

The stock active pickups seem a little weak, but they sound great. Excellent bass and good highs. I will likely replace the stock pups with some EMG or Seymour Duncan in the future. But for now they fit the bill.

The finish is flawless. Chrome hardware looks great.

What a joy to play. What are you waiting for?? Grab yourself one now!!

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for a while now, and I have to say I love it. I have a few other electrics, and this one is my favorite so far. Once I switched the stock strings out with some heavier gauge ones (10's) it sounds even better. For the price it is more than worth it. After some heavy use it did acquire some fret buzz, but this was easily fixed at my next string change. The sustain is much better than I expected with the Floyd Rose Special. I was thinking of changing the sustain block with a different one, but I have not decided yet. If I do, I will let you know how it turns out. I might also throw in some EMG pickups, a friend recommended that I try the EMG 81X. The overall tone is great for hard rock and metal, I also played a bit of blues mostly clean and it sounded pretty good too. The Trans Red finish it beautiful, and I have received many complements. One thing I am curious about is weather or not the top is 1/2" maple like the normal Pro X version. Other than that, the pickups, and tremolo it seems to be the same guitar, with the exception of the finish, which sells for $1000+ online.

Great guitar for the price, easily worth its value and then some. Get it setup right by a professional and you will love it. This has become my go to guitar for jamming.

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

Plays great. Looks cool. Has a great Metal, Punk, Hard-rock tone. The clean tone is fine, but not as great as I had hoped. The finish looks a little different in person than it does in the pictures. It sort of has a 70's bowling ball look to it. Its not bad, just a little different than I expected. I only have two issues with the purchase. 1. There are no instructions for the Floyd Rose tremolo. If you aren't familiar with how to tune them look it up on the web or you'll never get it in tune. 2). There's no instructions for the electronics and its setup a little different than I would have expected for the center switch position. At first I thought there was something wrong, but evidently that's just how it works.

All around good solid guitar with many perks. Not much to say when the product is very decent and a bargain for the price. I have the metal flake. Only thing is I have to do is take to music store to adjust the action. Not a biggie but I called Musicians friend and they split the cost with me. I will be recommending Musicians Friend to everyone I know from now on. Best customer service ever. Great sounding rock guitar.
