Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Special X3 Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

This is the 7th guitar I've bought sight-unseen from MF (and the 2nd M-bird). So far, I've kept 4 (a chambered LP gold-top, an ultra-light mahogany Tele, and 2 'novelty-guitars' [a Rocketeer and a 5/6 size Ibanez Destroyer]) and had to return 2 (an Epi SG Prophecy and a red Mockingbird--slightly different model than this). I've always wanted a Mockingbird; in the '70s when all those BC Rich 'pointy' guitars came out (Bich, Warlock, Bird, et al), these were the ones that looked great without the, um, 'adolescent' vibe/metal sensibility. This one's not as heavy as the 1st one I tried, and instead of 2HBs w/ coil-taps, series/parallel, a Floyd, and V-V-T, this one has the 3-HB layout of those '60 or '61 tuxedo-white SG 'Les Paul's: 2vol, 2tone, limited switching (the 3-way goes Bridge, Bridge and middle, neck). One Vol/tone pair goes to the neck p/u, the other is for bridge and bridge-middle....not how I'd have done it, either, but it's the familiar Gibson 3 pickup setup (I'm not sure about 3 pickup Firebirds with 3-ways...) for Black Beauties and those SGs. So, how's it sound? It sounds like I'm going to swap out the pickups and re-do the wiring scheme: these pickups seem "OK", but that's it. The bridge and bridge/middle have a pretty abrasive bark to them (which is annoying clean, but fairly rich harmonically with distortion). They sound a lot like a 496R and 496T. THe neck pickup is a lot warmer, and at least as loud as the other 2. there's not a lot of difference between the sound of 'bridge' and that of 'bridge and middle', btw. Mine's going to get JBs with coil cuts, and a S. Duncan Phat Cat (hb-sized P-90) for the neck spot. 3 volumes and 1 tone. 3 on/offs might not be a bad idea, either.
The tuners are nice and tight, inlay looks good, and none of my pots quite scrape the recess's sides like some reviewers mentioned (I can see where they are talking about, though. I've seen the same on PRS carved-tops, too). The finish is great on mine (honeyburst on quilted maple). Mine needed no set-up, either: it arrived intonated and with proper relief. It shipped with D'Addarrio 10-46s, so I'll re-check it when I put on my own 9-42s. All in all, this is an elegant-looking, easy-to-play, comfortable guitar, and mine's bound for ~really~ good tone once I get through 'upgrading' the pickups and wiring. After I ordered mine (it was the Stupid Deal a week ago), I saw it in the Sept. MF catalog--back page SALE ITEMS--for the same price as the SDOTD. Either way, it's worth the full price, and I'm really happy with the one I just got for 1/2 price. Now, where's my soldering iron?~~~~~

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Special X3 Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

This really Suprised me with just how beautiful the maple top was. The pictures do not do it justice. The fretboard and the setup are darn near perfect. It is nice to have a different body style than a normal les paul or a strat. The one down fall if there is one is the bridge and middle pickups. They are really muddy. I think if you put a better set of pickups in this it would go toe to toe with any american made electric costing thousands. It is my second korean built axe and both have flawless build quality. I really can't say enough about how beautiful the maple top is. I don't have a good way to describe it other than everyone that sees if says man that thing is sweet.

Great everything. I love the stock PUP's they sing! Beautiful finish, Unlike the MF pictures, the two lower knobs have the quilt top "carved" out so they fit without scratching the finish. could have been better design. Also the PUP selector switch shorts out in the neck or middle position. You have to wiggle it to make it "on"! No problem in bridge position though. Will open it up or take to my tech. when I can. One big problem is finding a good case, at a reasonable price, to transport and protect this beauty!

Comments about B.C. Rich Pro X Custom Special X3 Mockingbird Electric Guitar:

You can find out plenty about this guitar elsewhere, but there's a few things you should know. There are cutouts in the guitar for the knobs, which don't appear in the advertised pictures for either guitar. Three of the four are slightly oblong circles, and none of the knobs are centered. Inside the cutouts, the finish coat is thin and worn in places, and is not smooth like the rest of the guitar. You have to look closely and feel it to notice. (The knobs do not rub the guitar). I got the tobacco burst with gold hardware, and the color of the guitar seems a bit darker, almost like the version with silver hardware. Also, the back is a darkish brown, not black, like it appears in the picture. When I pulled it out of the box I thought they sent me the wrong guitar. It certainly is not the same as it was advertised. It's almost like a blend of the two guitars. It still looks really nice, and I absolutely love to play it.. I would've rated this a 5, but I rated it a 4 to bring attention to these things. Knowing what I do now, I probably would have still bought the guitar because it was a great deal, and I am happy with it. Though this would have been nice to know in advance. Last thought... I plan on swapping the knobs out for some gold ones. :)

I would not call myself a novice but I'm not really what I would call experienced either. I just love to play. I have always wanted a mockingbird and this one just grabbed me when I found it on sale. I think the pickups sound very good for stock. I will be switching to some dimarzio's in the future. but this will satisfy anyone from the beginner to a professional player who is looking for a great deal. I would recommend this to anyone.

I was a little leary buying this guitar. Mainly because of the price. But I read the reviews and they all seemed positive so I pulled the trigger and bought it. It arrived yesterday and I essentially played it right out of the box. I was pleasantly surprised with the build quality and the sound. A few reviewers said the pickups weren't up to par. But I think they're just fine. The guitar is nice and light and the top is beautiful. This is definately a good bang for the buck guitar.

Bought a Condition One for almost 80% off of MSRP...unbelieveable, thanx MF(again..) Stunning Bookmatched Quilted Maple Top (not a Veneer). Only had to Intonate A couple cents on a couple saddles.. Best Factory Set-Up I've seen, sweet action, good relief, smooth playability. PUPS(Broad Dynamic Sonically Matched) are good enough but some will surely want Hotter Output. Bridge PUP knobs drag on the finish but that will wear away I suppose. Body is 2" thick like a Paul but not too heavy. Strap balance is fine, nice big strap buttons. Stays in tune but is worthy of Sperzals upgrade. Mid position on PUP selector is mid/bridge PUP combo, not sure about that yet, may have to add mini-switch to get all 3 on at once plus middle PUP by itself. Overall, this is the best value I've ever gotten. Including 2 Acoustics(Martin,Washburn)and a Bass I'm @ a Baker's Dozen...my wife(keyboards)agrees, that should be enough. (ESP,Fndr,Gib,G&L,Hag,Ibnz,RWG,Wshbrn) Anyone else out there addicted to guitars? A Healthy Habit 4 Sure.

My other Mock's have balance issues requiring moving the rear strap button up a couple inches. Not this one. The quality of workmanship is way better than I expected from an import. Plays GREAT right out of the box. Required no bridge or truss rod adjustment. The pickups that came in it are a really good PAF style pickup. I'll end up changing to my usual Seymour Duncan's in the future but right now these are doing great. The quilt top on this one is AMAZING. The figure in the MOP inlays is beautiful. Overall an excellent guitar at any price but unrivalled in this price range.
