OVERVIEW

An amazing acoustic-electric guitar with great tone and ease of playability.

The very first guitars that Bernie Rico made under the B.C. Rich banner were acoustic. It is with this nod to the early days of B.C. Rich' illustrious past, that they've created the B.C. Rich Series 3 guitar, an acoustic-electric which touches upon and evolves from that classic moment in time. This stunner with flame maple top and headstock partnered with akoume/mahogany back and sides features a fast satin neck and Modern Cutaway body style that helps you reach notes easier. It also comes with a discreet Fishman Sonitone pickup to help electrify your acoustic performances. As with all B.C. Rich instruments, it starts with great sound and playability and then takes it up a notch with boutique guitar visual design elements including a diamond artwork rosette, chrome die-cast tuners with R logo, white plastic diamond and double diamond fingerboard inlays, and white plastic top binding with black inside.

I bought this as a stupid deal of the day, and I'm glad I did. The headstock is finished poorly, in that the brown stain on the mahogany neck bleeds ever so slightly into the headstock. Nothing the folks will be able to see while I'm on stage, but it's still annoying how this passed QC. Plus, the pickguard is a clear, acessory pickguard that you have to apply yourself. I understand the appeal, but I'm bad at that stuff, so I din't like it. However, that's where all the negatives end.

The sound is perfect, very rich and balanced. The stock D'Addario EXP strings feel incredible. The frets were darn near perfectly leveled, and only the smallest protrusion from the side of the neck (amazing at this price point). Neck is a smooth, satin feel, and is one of the best neck I have ever felt. The nut is great, and I thought I would have to replace it, but it's just fantastic. The electronics are ok, nothing fancy, but they get the job done. Tuners are stable, and the strap pin is positioned very well. Overall, amazing instrument. Makes me wish they had gotten into acoustics again sooner. Get this while you can get it on sale.

Bought this on sale for 200 (reg. 400) and seemed like a great deal. Right out of the box I was dissapointed as the flamed maple was not even close to being as pretty as shown when ordering on MF. It did not look like a 400 (reg price) guitar...it looked like a 150-200 guitar. I was willing to overlook this based on the great sale price I got.

Then I heard something flopping around on the inside of the guitar. The acoustic pickup had fallen off and was loose. I thought maybe it will just easily snap back (or be glued) into place.

I started to unwind the bass strings to make room to reach inside and try to fix the pickup. The E and A string came off fine. Then half way through unwinding the D string, the post that the string wraps around stopped turning, while the peg that you turn with your fingers kept turning and quickly became loose and felt ready to fall off. The only way to get the string off now was to cut it. The tuners used on this guitar are cheap diecast tuners with no manufacture stamp on them...so I assume they are made by or for BC Rich. Very dissapointing that BC Rich did not use a quality tuner on a model that normally sells for 400. I have paid much less on new acoustic guitars before that came with Grover tuners, some of the best tuners availible.

If I was dealing with just any one of these issues I could have lived with it based on the sale price. But everything together was too much and so the guitar was returned.

I'm sure BC Rich has some nice guitars somewhere out there, this certainly wasn't one of them. Not a good first impression.

Bottom Line: Based on my experience I would not recomend buying this guitar (not even on sale) because of qaulity issues.

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

This review is entitled "C'mon man!" because I wonder what fellow players expect for such little money. When I started over 40 years ago, such an instrument would have been inconceivable, much less for such a price. I think many of MF's reviewers are overly picky in this regard. If you want to buy an expensive Martin D-35 like the one I own, or a concert Taylor, then you're entitled to complain about minutiae. But I can't carry my Martin around everywhere anymore for fear of theft and damage, and this is where the BC Rich comes in.
Depending on your visual taste, the gray (transparent black) is closer to blue, but is stunning nonetheless. Everything works fine right out of the box, and it sounds terrific amplified.

People spend more on dinner for 2,a nice bottle of wine, parking, tax and tip. Here you have an excellent instrument that will last for years, and which you can afford to entrust to the airlines without buying an extra seat.

Lots of very functional products are now made in China or Indonesia for reasonable prices, and this BC Rich Acoustic 3 is a prime example.

It does have a good feel and the sound is pretty good as well. When you play it unplugged it doesn't seem to project the sound very loudly. Good sound when plugged in. Good quality for the on sale price I paid.

One can never have too many quality instruments at bargain prices-- hard to pass up this one-- and beyond some adjustment to the truss rod (some fret buzzing right out of the box) it feels and sounds amazing.

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

I don't often write reviews but I'm compelled to write this one. I was expecting to receive a guitar whose craftsmanship, quality and sound were on par with other low priced guitars (bought it during the stupid deal of the day promotion). I was surprised that this acoustic plays about the same as a guitar I bought several years ago for three times the price.

The neck is slim and fast to play. The guitar already came set up properly so the action was very good. I normally tune the whole guitar down a half step, so once I did that, the action was perfect without any buzzing.

This guitar is very loud not plugged in. Most people will misinterpret this as having too much high end but that's not the case, it's just that the high frequencies give you the impression that's something's askew. It mic's beautifully when recording with an SM58 and sounds great plugged directly into an acoustic amp or board. I usually record both at the same time (SM58 and board) to capture the widest possible sound range.

This is now my go-to guitar for recording and live performances. Also, it's lightweight and well balanced for playing live. Next time it's on sale I will definitely buy another as a backup...

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

So no, it's not a Taylor. BUT BC Rich has been knocking it out of the park with their imports for years and this axe is no exception. For the money, this is a fantastic sounding, playing and looking guitar that will serve most of your needs as a beginner or backup guitar. The bridge, neck and nut really seem of higher quality and the fact that it came with D'addario EXP strings and decent Fishman internal electronics is a huge plus. It even came with the 9V battery installed and was setup pretty close to the low action I prefer. The truss rod and tuners turn like butter and mine is staying in tune very well contrary to a few other reviewers here - after a few turns to make the neck even straighter. Bottom line - this is a great guitar for your arsenal.

One was the beauty of the Tobacco burst finish and second the light weight, Third, Can't beat this price.. I as surprised that the volume and tone controls were inside the of the sound hole, No big deal, other than that, I would buy this instrument again. Quality and craftsmanship is very high! Sounds very good! For the money It's a keeper! Enjoy!

Overall I'm not too happy with this...when amplified the E-A-D strings "hog" the sound, regardless of the amp. I also find the action to be clunky unless I use a capo on the second fret or higher, open chords are hard to play and tough on the hands and fingers. I didn't expect an expensive guitar, but frankly I have ROGUE'S which played MUCH better out of the box. I don't really want to spend a lot of time turning this sow's ear into a silk purse. It IS pretty and well balanced, but...

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

Got this as a scratch and dent for less than a C note (can you figure that out?). So even if it was not the greatest guitar I would be happy, but WOW I am awed at the great deals here @ Musician's Friend (been using them since the early 1980s). As a SnD I was expecting some sign of either, scratches or dents - but found neither. Nor could I find any imperfections with this guitar, period.

So about whether or not you should buy one - the answer is an resounding yes! The guitar has stayed in tune since I got it and have been playing frequently with this guitar both acoustically and electrically. The controls are just inside the top of the sound hole - not too easy to get to but most times the volume and tone are set and forget - you can adjust it at the amp or control pedal.

Acoustically, it has a rich, deep sound, nice and bright as well. Well made and beautiful (mine is the natural). Not much else to say - if you prefer outside controls or built-in tuner, this one doesn't have it. But for sound this one is hard to beat. (Which is more important?)

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

I've owned this guitar for about two weeks now. It was perfect out of the box. I just had to tune it and start playing. The red finish is beautiful, it plays nice, and it sounds good plugged in. The volume and tone controls are in the soundhole, but are easy to use. I would have liked a built in tuner, but for the price I paid I can't complain.

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

I have seen very mixed reviews for this guitar but figured I would try one out anyways for the price and I got the short end of the straw.

This guitar is very beautiful, looking like a much higher end guitar than it is. That is kind of where the pros stop for me.

The guitar has a warped neck, most noticably around the 5th fret under the A string. I have not been able to get this worked out yet and may result in me returning the guitar. This is TBD. I don't know that I will be able to get this worked through.

The sound of the guitar acoustically is fine but amplified suffers. The sound is not that clear and that is pretty disappointing as I bought this for doing small venue amplified acoustic gigs.

I took a risk. Some people love these guitars and possibly if I can get the neck issue resolved, I will too but for now, I would not recommend this guitar.

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

Anyone who complains about this guitar not being perfect right out of the box, would probably also complain about the currency bills used if someone gave them free money. My B.C. Rich seemed to me to so perfect that I wonder if they set it up in the custom shop before sending it out UPS.
Other guitars I own and play are Gretch ELectromatic pre 1999, Fender American Telecaster, American made Martin Acoustic, an Epiphone Sorento 62 reissue and others. Point is I know what good guitar plays and sounds like and this B.C Rich Series 3 is a worthy instrument. I really wanted an other American made Acoustic Electric but lucked out when I bought this DEAL instead. No Regret!! what-so-ever.

Comments about B.C. Rich Series 3 Acoustic-Electric Cutaway Guitar:

I've been playing for 35+ years. I needed a new beater acoustic electric to play small clubs without bringing my increasingly valuable old instruments out. This was a "STUPID DEAL" for a ridiculous price. I looked at the specs and said well, if it's unuable I'll just pass it on. It has Fishman electronics and it had my initial on the headstock, lol.. MAN....was I surprized. Very light and resonant. Perfect intonation. Great neck if you play mostly electric like I do. Compensated bridge. Best bang for the buck I have ever seen. It sounds as good as many MUCH more expensive guitars I have owned/played. That big white R on the headstock is easily scrubbed off and you could stencil anything you want up there. It isn't perfect out of the box. The nut on mine was cut to high and I had to fix that. Otherwise... It's really pretty sweet for what it is. The inlays are plastic, it is cheap. It isn't finished with lacquer. It isn't made from exotic woods with interesting grains and patterns. It isn't a work of art. But from 10 ft away no body would notice. If you are a beginner or a novice, don't expect it to be perfect out of the box, but really what is? You are going to have to set it up. (I suspect that's why they are blowing them out) But if you have a few skills and want a performance grade instrument for next to nothing it's a great deal. It even came with decent strings on it (Dads), but I don't care for coated strings.

Well, this thing arrived in beautiful condition. Running through my Acoustic practice amp. Warm and satisfying. Did I spell that right? I kinda like sitting and looking at it. Remember I'm the trumpet and bus driver, but I know guitars. I will fill our twanging needs. Personally I don't feel it's as light as noted. I has a great balanced feel. And the electric is not over driven. The shipping department here are on the ball. Always amazed when Buster Brown showes up.

Beautiful instrument faithful to photo but... Neck very narrow at the nut and action a mile high.Difficult to play and tune even with clip on tuner. (Maybe because the action was so high?) With all the attention paid to everything else about this guitar, I don't understand why they dropped the ball at a simple fix affecting the most important thing about this guitar; the PLAYABILITY! I could have gone through the hassle of grinding the bridge down, hoping for the best, but since I don't care for the neck profile of these instruments, decided on another brand of guitar instead. Great custumer service from the person who assisted me at Musician's Friend.

Easy to play, low action, great feel and body shape is sweet.I was surprised and happy to use it.. Little upset the paint is not consistent on the sound hole and back of the guitar. Not dried at factory properly and sprayed correctly.Other than that it stays in tune and has a nice sound and well worth the price..
