Comments about Breedlove Passport Parlor Satin Mahogany Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just purchased the Breedlove Passport Parlor in Mahogany from MF. I only have the guitar a few days so I can not comment on the long term use of the guitar.

On initial inspection I was pleasantly surprised that the guitar body was in a satin finish and not a high gloss as advertised. After ordering I found some pictures of the guitar on line. The high gloss finish looked too reflective for my liking. I checked with Breedlove and they said that they did make a run of satin finish on this model. The the second pleasant suppress is that the guitar was made in Korea not China. I have owned several other guitars that were made Korea and have always been impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of the instruments. Breedlove also includes an allen wrench for the truss rod adjustment, a spare saddle, saddle shims, an owners manuel, and a Fishman users guide with the guitar.

The guitar set up out of the box was good. The neck was only needed a slight adjustment of the truss rod. The action was acceptable for most players but a little high for my taste. (Sanding a bit off the saddle brought the action down to my liking.) The string tension was a little stiff for me and I change the strings from the 12's it came with to 11's. The frets were perfectly polished and seated. There was no string buzzing or dead spots down the length of the fretboard. The satin finish was evenly applied with no imperfections that I could find. The tuning keys offered accurate and smooth tuning with no string slippage.

Acoustically the guitar has a nice sound a little tight but I attribute that to its small body size and mahogany construction. Electrically the sound improves greatly. It has a balanced tone that offers a nice presence. The built in tuner is easy to use ( even if the guitar is unplugged ) and the preamp controls allow enough versatility to achieve a nice amplified sound. As I intend to play the guitar amplified this works well for me. The guitar also has a USP output jack for recording. (You will need a micro to standard USB cord to connect it.)

The few negative things I found were annoying but did not affect the overall quality.

Changing the strings on this guitar is a challenge. The strings get hung up in the valley before the saddle. I needed to lift each string (with a little screw driver) out of the bridge valley in order to get them over the saddle.

It is a 12 fret guitar and the position of the strap button is on the underside of the neck heal making it difficult for your hand to finger past the 12th fret when a strap is being used.

The gig bag that comes with the guitar is terrible. Is has absolutely no padding and offers no protection. I highly recommend getting a hard shell case or high end gig bag for the instrument. I purchased the DLX Classical Guitar Case from MF and it fits really well. The guitar is a little short for the case, but that space is a great place to store my rolled up guitar strap.

All and all the guitar plays and sounds great. If your looking for a 12fret parlor guitar this instrument will be a great choice.

Comments about Breedlove Passport Parlor Satin Mahogany Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar from Musicians Friend, and initially did not bond w/ the sound. But I realized it was the strings I didn't like. I changed them several times, changed the bridge to bone, and finally reached a sound that I really liked!
It has a surprisingly loud sound for such a small guitar-- well-balanced and warm. The size is comfortable to play. Recently, I traveled with it and it was light and easy to handle. Glad I kept it!
