Comments about Breedlove Passport Parlor Satin Sitka Spruce Top Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

FIRST: this is a PARLOR guitar. Full scale neck, but little body. No booming bass. Also, it would look almost comic in front of a large person. In that context, this is a BEAUTIFULLY built instrument with rich bright sound that gently cuts through "the mix".

I'm enthusiastic about this guitar. It is possibly the most responsive, forgiving acoustic I've ever played over the past fifty years. If I reach for a note it seems to know what I meant and produces a clear, clean bright sound without complaining. Very nice companion for contemplative playing on a peaceful evening. Whether I play gently or aggressively, it doesn't fuss, complain, buzz or snap. Comfortable neck, even for a classical player like me. Large frets seem to work right on this guitar. It is a responsive guitar that is warm and bright, balanced and clean. Every string somehow sounds distinct from every other while blending smoothly with precise intonation everywhere on the fingerboard. It shimmers. This little gem delivers delightfully.

One of the finest luthiers in the state inspected it, pointed out the quality features, and tweaked the action, which, out of the box, was okay. But I play nylon mostly so I'm a wimp (not impugning nylon players in general, of course, just myself) and am willing to trade in a bit of sound for a lighter touch. The guitar ships with "12's", stiff. But he recommended keeping them to allow for lower action without buzz, which I agree was a wise call. It is a good playing guitar set up like this. He took the 3 treble strings down a tiny bit at the nut. All six down a tiny bit at the saddle. He pointed out to me details of construction that he sees on high end guitars. He admired wood joinery, quality satin finish, attractive wood grain. The saddle angles away from the fingerboard, which, he said, helps to explain its wonderful electric sound. He mentioned Breedlove has a good reputation, and it appears well earned.

I prefer using no amplifier, so I almost hate to admit that this guitar REALLY shines plugged in. Very easy to get a wonderful acoustic sound through an amp. No booming bass, remember? The amp loved that feature, and returned a wonderfully balanced, warm, bright sound. (I know warm and bright don't usually go together, but this guitar produces both.) I did a recording test using the Fishman pickup and quarter inch output. The strings sustained a good long time, and as it went quiet the recorder showed SILENCE on the screen. Quiet electrics. Nice onboard tuner. I think the quarter inch output recorded a little better through a good A/D interface than the USB, which is what I'd expect. But the USB lit right up on my computer and I was recording in seconds. Includes phase control to help guitar duck neighboring sounds that might cause feedback. Different from notch filter, but serves to help guitar play nice with other loud sounds going on.

Comes with gig bag, which is sturdy, padded, handles and shoulder straps, with extra pocket around head to prevent guitar from flipping out accidentally. Simple, compact package. Almost seems like a travel size guitar, until you play it, and realize what a stout little worker Breedlove put together. Very comfortable to hold. I got rid of a Martin 016NY years ago (redo, please?), a silk-n-steel "parlor" size guitar. I hoped this might sort of replace that one. They are different guitars, but I don't think this takes a back seat to the Martin on any point. I'm very pleased with this instrument. Good job, Breedlove!

Great guitar for the kids. Neck is a little smaller, the body is smaller, the sound is a little smaller but the quality of the intonation and staying in tune etc. is amazing!

Comments about Breedlove Passport Parlor Satin Sitka Spruce Top Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is one of the best purchases I've made in a while. I was looking for a guitar that was small enough to take when traveling, but I wasn't too impressed with the mini versions of the big name manufacturers. I spent a lot of time researching and seeking out other guitars of similar size and price to do some comparisons since I wasn't familiar some of the smaller, artisan manufacturers. I ended up purchasing this one sight unseen after some reassurance about MF's return policy and the price drop.

The finish on the guitar and build quality is outstanding for this price point. It is a bit heavier than other parlor guitars I tried, even others with electronics. I was expecting a more high gloss finish, but was happy to see it was a little more matte than advertised.

The sound is actually quite big for such a small guitar. It had the most mid range and bass response of any of the parlors I tried. All of the others I tried were far more treble heavy, which is sort of to be expected with this size. The sustain is so good it is actually surprising. It is also a very forgiving guitar. I've already found that I am reaching for it instead of guitars I've owned for years. It sounded good out of the box, but definitely benefited from a proper set up. There was a slight buzzing on a few frets prior to the set up.

I wasn't really looking for a built in pickup system when looking at guitars, but it has proven to be a nice plus. It took me a while to finally plug it in, but it really does shine through the Fishman electronics. There is a noticeable difference between the 1/4" jack and the USB connection. The USB could be useful if you are traveling with a laptop, but I don't think it will get much use. The other plus of the electronics is the built in tuner.

Overall, this guitar is really a great value, especially if you can catch it on sale. It even comes with a fairly nice, albeit lightweight, gig bag.
