The C. B. Gitty "Diddley Bow" Kit will surprise you with what you can do with just ONE string. This is how the Blues began…and many cultures around the world have uni-string instruments. All you need in the kit is here, and basic tools like drill, saw, screwdriver, file etc are all you need. Want to find out how BB King and (yes) Bo Diddley got their start? It's right here.
A diddley bow is a one-string instrument whose lineage goes back thousands of years. The first prototype diddley bow (in the style also known as a Musical Bow) was painted on cave walls in France upwards of 15,000 years ago.
Traditionally, diddley bows were made using a plank with two nails/posts with a tightened string stretched between them. When that string is plucked or struck with a stick, and a smooth hard object is used as a slide and moved up and down on the string, different pitches result and melodies can be played. You can see a picture of the style of diddley bow built from this kit above.
Makes a great project to do with kids too. Order today.

Comments about C.B. Gitty Cigar Box Diddley Bow One-String Guitar Kit:
I've built several of these diddley bow kits and they're historically authentic, with the exception of using a new guitar tuner instead of a bent nail or whittled tuner. A cigar box makes a great resonator and these diddley bows sound nice and loud.
These kits are just a little more involved than the C. B. Gitty "Pure & Simple" kit (also sold on Musician's Friend: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/c.b.-gitty-cigar-box-pure-simple-3-string-slide-guitar-kit). You'll need to cut a hole for the neck to go in...but it's still a very easy instrument to build. Great for pedagogy.
The guitar is played with a slide (provided) and is a great way to learn the slide guitar concept.
Blind Willie Johnson started out on a one-string "diddley bow" cigar box guitar and used a pocketknife for a slide. He developed his unique slide style from learning songs on a single string. It's a process heard time and again from many old blues legends.
