OVERVIEW

Modified for higher performance.

Part of Charvel's Production-Mod Series, the So-Cal Style 1 HH is jammed-pack with high-performance specs and mods. The 25-1/2" scale alder body is crafted into the ultra-comfortable So-Cal shape and is mated to a 1-piece quartersawn maple neck. The compound radius (12"-16") fretboard is fleet and sweet for chording on the low end and extreme bending in the upper range of its 22 jumbo frets. The So-Cal is powered by a DiMarzio Evolution humbucker in the neck position and a DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge. Just as Eddie established in the '80s, all you need is a volume knob to control this beast. Grover Mini Rotomatics tuners and Floyd Rose FRTO2000 double-locking tremolo maintain rock solid tuning even after the most vigorous whammy-workout. The molded, rectangular SKB hardshell case with TSA-approved latches is ready to handle the rigors of the road (or the air).

DiMarzio Evolution humbucker

Designed for maximum impact and power”to get a tight, aggressive, loud sound. It incorporates a patented dual-resonance coil configuration that senses more harmonic overtones than ordinary humbuckers. Works in almost all solidbodies and most semi-hollowbodies as well. The Evolution makes the lowest notes jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

DiMarzio Tone Zone humbucker
The vowel-like open wah-wah feel of the PAF Pro and FRED is combined with tremendous midrange and bass for a sound that really kicks hard. Because the lows, mids, and highs are all boosted, using a Tone Zone feels like cranking up an extra set of tone controls. It adds further dimension to the sound of your amp - that elusive edge that can make a good-sounding rig into a great-sounding one. Notes seem to get bigger after they're picked, and burn hard as they sustain. It's the right stuff to wake up your amp. Ballsy, aggressive tone has plenty of drive in all the right frequencies, abundant gain to push preamps and power amps, and sensitivity to pick attack that gets the most out of any style from metal to blues. Hot enough to qualify as a high-output pickup but with a wider dynamic range. Hard picking will produce a lot of power and softer picking will be much cleaner and quieter.

Okay. I don't own it yet so I'll break my reasoning into categories...Internet research: The independent guitar shops are giving it glowing reviews. The guys on YouTube who own these are in love. I searched thoroughly for someone, ANYONE who would say ONE bad thing about this axe. I haven't found a negative thing yet.Seeing is believing: I went to my local b&m to play the San Dimas model, which I played along with the Wildcard and this one. I felt this one (the So Cal) fits me better. I felt the DiMarzios are cleaner and brighter, but still get nasty (real nasty) when you want them to. The Seymours in the San Dimas did not impress me and sounded muddy...IMO. The Wild Card had Seymours also in a HSS config, same thing...didn't like the pups. Plus, I didn't like the rosewood fretboard on the wildcard. So, the So Cal it is!I played it au naturale through a Marshall JCM 2000 with no effects. It has bell chime cleans," Strat-like blues spank with no or low or med gain. As I moved up the ""gain scale"" on the JCM I got everything from Alex Lifeson to Dimebag. Yes"," it is that versatile. Some are ""put off"" that these new Charvels are made in Japan. Don't be. Same high quality materials different assemble point. Who cares? By the way", my research has found that EVERYONE working on the line in this Japanese factory (also producing Jacksons, EVH and others) have to have graduated a recognized luthier school/program. I'll bet that not even Fender and Gibson USA require that. P.S. Yes, Charvel and Jackson were bought by Fender in 2002, if you didn't know.Bottom line, if you want a Strat type guitar, but the HSS just doesn't scream quite enough than this is a high quality alternative. Can't wait to get mine! Peace-n-love...peace-n-love...Features - I gave it a 10 only because the features it DOES have are great. However, it does not have many. That's what I really like, a basic/stripped down rock/metal machine! If you want tone control(s), coil tap, etc... move along. This thing has a double locking trem, volume pot and 3-way pup toggle. That's it and I love it.Built like a Sherman tank! I wouldn't bang on the painted finish too much, but other than that its solid as a rock. The rolled off neck edges (almost scalloped?) are buttery smooth, but the fretboard remains flat and highly playable....and FAST!At first feel, you'll realize that this axe has the quality of many guitars TWICE the price.Rock solid axe, with some features found on custom shop models. Very asthetically pleasing. With a hardshell case! Duh... No brainer. I will be buying within weeks.

Very nice guitar for the price. Comes with great pickups. Gigged last night for the first time with it and it performed well. The only drawback to this guitar that you should know up fromt is the need to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod. If that's a deal breaker then Ibanez make great ones too. I just like the feel of this a lot.

Thanks and hope this helps.

You have to play it to appreciate it!!

This is my first Charvel as well as my first Floyd Rose guitar. I absolutely love it. This guitar can play any kind of music from any genre. The cleans are classic fender and with the humbuckers, it can cover the meaty Gibson tones, too. The floyd is korean or chinese but stays in tune perfectly ( It's the same Floyd that comes on the Ltd. Kirk Hammett KH-602).

The Dimarzio pickups are very nice and well balanced. I've never used Dimarzio's but I now understand why so many people praise them. The evolution neck pickup is so warm and can nail blues, high gain soloing, low gain rythm, and clean strumming. The tone zone bridge can do whatever you want it to, your imagination is the only boundary.

I highly recommend this guitar for anybody, if for no other reason than the neck on it. It is super smooth and extremely fast with great action and perfect fret work. Give this guitar a shot and you will not, WILL NOT be disappointed. Great job Charvel!!

BTW, the Japanese factory where these were built has been closed down so get one while you still can!!!
Simple, straight-forward but perfect. A single volume knob and a selector switch for the two humbuckers. Nothing is in the way, and if something ever fails it's alot easier to work on.
Feels like it should cost alot more than it does. Really well built and the case is the same as the U.S. made Fenders, only it has Charvel engraved on the top. Overall, I was highly impressed.
I didn't buy it from this fine company, but the price they are selling it for is still a good value.

The thing that drew me to this guitar is I had a Charvel Model 4 in 1986 and I really liked it. Since I usually use a Les Paul or Strat I thought I needed a guitar with a Floyd Rose like I had in the 80?s, I used to love picking up the guitar by the wiggle stick in an effort to have more stage presence during gigs. When I opened the box I was expecting what I remember in the 80?s, not so? This thing was pristine! Perfect in every way, I was worried about buying a guitar online without playing it. I didn?t know a fret job could look this good, it?s ridiculous; I mean I don?t know how they get the frets to look that good. The Guitar is built in Japan and I remember making jokes back in the 80?s about anything made in Japan, similar to what we think of things made in China today. Japan has come a long way since then, just look at Toyota! I am excited about this guitar; it blows away my old Charvel Model 4.I gave it a ?4? on features and here?s why: I really wanted an HSS. I don?t care so much for a humbucker in the neck position so I will need to change out the pick guard and switch (may put a tone control in there as well). Charvel has one of these out that has HSS, but it is green and has a rosewood fingerboard. I didn?t want green and I thought it was be nice to have a maple fret board. The bridge Dimarzio pickup is good for metal music but I really don?t care for that, I prefer a 59 but I will keep the Dimarzio in there for a while.? Beautiful fretwork? Original Floyd Rose? Very fast neck? Great sustain? Awesome original Fender headstock? Stunning paint job (mine is red)? Superb feel/playability

The only thing that is holding me back from a ten is the build quality. Otherwise it is a very nice guitar with a great tone and very fast quartersawn neck
Everything I need, and I have to admit those pickups sound very good on a clean setting, but I do wish that there was a coil split in the volume knob.
The soldering was my only issue as there were stray wires that didn't make the full connection, along with a few melted spots on the wire casings. The paint was close to perfect, but I did notice the slightest ripple in the clear coat on the back of the guitar.
The parts, woods, and that awesome hard case are well worth it

outstanding, fast neck

By Killingtime

from East Tennessee

I recently bought a Charvel so-cal (ferrari red) from this site and the fit, finish and playability is awsome. The neck is everything Charvel promises it to be and more. It's the fastest easiest neck I have ever played. The rolled edges on the frets and fretboard make this neck awsome. The Dimarzio pickups tone zone bridge, evolution neck clean up really well, not the clean you get from single coils on a strat, but really good. The distortion is what it does best, It really gets dirty, so you should be able to dial in pretty much any tone your looking for just roll off the volume some and adjust the three way selector to the pickup configuration you want. overall its an amazing guitar. The case it comes with is tough as nails too. A great buy. I love mine and its now my main guitar

Ask me a question

I purchased one of these guitars and I am amazed at the feel and playability of the neck. I have always been a strat guy so, the body fits me like a glove. Great tone and a great value. Sounds great through my Marshall TSL 601.

So Cal

I was contemplating between a Charvel so-cal and a Music Man y2d. I had played a Music Man and was severly impressed with its neck and craftsmanship. I ended up buying this one (although mine is made in USA and a slime green)without playing one first.. All I can say is I do not regret paying $1099.99 for it even though who I bought it from bought it from Charvel for $659.99. This is an incredible guitar. I cannot get over the fact of how great the neck feels and looks. Whatever Charvel does to make their necks the way they do, they are doing something right. If you buy this guitar you won't have any regrets.

Overall this is a great value guitar for this price point.
There are so many things I like about this guitar Comfortable neck that is very fast. I was looking for a guitar with a floyd rose and this one didnt disappoint. I may change out the tone zone to a more classic sounding pickup but otherwise I wouldnt change a thing.
Great quality guitar but needed some setup work out of the box.
Great value!! Well made guitar and it even comes with a hard shell case.

Perfect Super Strat

I like everything about this guitar. I have six other electrics but this one became my go to guitar as soon as I played it for the first time. The Tone Zone is a nice warm chunky pickup that sounds great for rhythm and leads. If you like Strats and Floyd Rose trems its a perfect guitar to have.
Very simple design. One volume, and 3 way pickup selector. One thing that bugs me is the truss rod adjustment is at the neck heel and somewhat of an inconvenience but I switched strings from 9s to 10s and still haven't had to adjust it so its not really that big of a deal.
I can't find any flaws. Fretwork is very solid and the neck is a work of art. Very fast and smooth. The Floyd is the next best thing to the original German made Floyd. Its the Korean made Floyd but its made with hardened steel and its a quality piece. It stays in tune perfectly unlike some of the cheaper knock offs.
For the price it can't be beat.
