OVERVIEW

A steel-string approached from a classical or Spanish guitar building perspective.

The D10-E belongs to Cordoba’s Acero series, a line of all-solid steel strings approached from a classical or Spanish guitar building perspective. Most notably, Cordoba is using an integrated neck joint or “Spanish Heel” instead of a traditional dovetail joint to join the body and neck of the guitar. This method of construction offers a lighter weight and more stable heel joint that increases resonance and is less prone to movement as the guitar ages.

The bracing pattern is a hybrid of a Torres style Spanish fan pattern and X-bracing, and allows the top to move freely with an explosive attack and big, dark tone. The D10-E dreadnought appeals to the player looking for the darker, and more dynamic tone that is typically associated with solid rosewood back and sides.

The D10-E also features a solid Engelmann spruce top for added clarity along with a beautiful ebony fingerboard and rosewood bridge and binding. The styling is refined and sleek, using acacia wood on the double ring rosette and 12th fret fingerboard inlays, capped off with Cordoba’s signature elevated headstock with a rosewood strip and Mother of Pearl inlay. The finish is a thinly applied high gloss polyurethane.

The D10-E also comes with the Acoustic Fidelity System II (AFS), Cordoba’s new proprietary pickup that offers both piezo and mic blending capabilities. Other features include a TUSQ nut and saddle, gold Grover tuners, Elixir NANOWEB Light Gauge (.012-.053) strings, and a Cordoba deluxe archtop wood case with built in HumiCase humidification.

Comments about Cordoba D9-E Acoustic Electric Guitar:

Although I have somewhat small fingers, I am more comfortable with a wider fingerboard for my finger picking. I have played all kinds of different brand acoustics and electrics and have always found my "home" with a nut width at least 43mm or greater. This D9e has a 45mm (1.8") that just feels fantastic to me. Some wider nut guitars have thinner (front to back) necks that don't complement a wider nuts. Again, this Cordoba's nut is perfect, well at least for me, and all of my guitar playing friends who have played it.

Being an all solid wood guitar adds that extra level of depth to the overall tone that a laminate back/side guitar lacks. In most cases it is a very slight difference, but one that is audible. The wood finish is nicely matched and looks fantastic, way beyond the price point paid. The appointments are not flashy, but instead very subtle in nature; I love it!

Now the guitar I received had a dead battery reading around 3 volts that was insufficient to power the preamp. OK, I can live with that. But the guitar also came with a set of Elixir strings that exhibited corrosion and required replacement (hey, these are not inexpensive strings to replace). Strange thing is there was corrosion at all because the full length of all the strings were covered with what I assume is a corrosion resistance paper material. The bottom line here is, it is apparent these guitar come directly from there overseas builders without any additional USA quality control inspection before being sold to their intended buyers.

The dual pickup preamp is a very simple layout with volume, tone, and a mic/piezo blend control. I really do appreciate the simplicity of these types of controls and that the designers did not cut the typical huge "barn door" opening into the side. Thank you Cordoba! Also the guitar included a deluxe hard shell case with a built in humidifier. Got to love that. Add it all up, and it a keeper!
