Comments about Danelectro Hodad Electric Guitar:

I own one of the original (Evets Corp) Hodads. These are true tone monsters but the new manufacturers screwed up just a little. The Evets models have a Bigsby style Vibrato with a chromed roller bridge, and sealed, high-quality Gotoh tuners.. Message to Musicians Friend, and all Retailers: Pressure the factory to bring back the original. Even so, this guitar, if they retained the original build quality, is still a
tone monster and a ton of fun for pocket change.

Comments about Danelectro Hodad Electric Guitar:

I cannot believe that there are not more reviews of this great guitar from Danelectro. Out of the box the set-up was pretty decent except for the "floating bridge" based on how the neck mated with the body. The metal bridge provided was same tele-like bridge as on all reissue Danos, but it was not secured against the guitar body, thereby killing some sustain. Danelectro should have used a different bridge so that it could be secured closer to the guitar body. The finish was a beautiful gloss black w/o any flaws, even the headstock decal looked very professional especially compared to my 56-U2 Dano. I was somewaht diappointed that body was not completely hollow around the back of the bridge like on the other Dano reissues because that would give it a slightly more vibrato/reverb effect and made it more acoustically alive. The PUPs are great, real vintage output at 6.79k ohms for the bridge and 6.48k ohms for the neck in dual coil mode. Engaging the coil tap push-pull pot (for single coil mode) drops the output to 3.5k ohms for the bridge and 3.33k ohms for the neck. These PUPs provided the vintage Dano jangle that they're known for (i.e. beautiful articulate clean tones and very good overdriven tones that don't quite get into classical overdriven LP territory). The dual (or humbucker) mode make the guitar more versatile than the traditional Danos such as the 56-U2 or the 59-DC (i.e. Jimmy Page model). There's also a push-pull pot to put the bridge and neck PUPs out-of-phase with each other which is more useful with some decent amp gain and one of the PUPs vol pot turned slightly higher than the other to get a twisted nasal hollow type effect. There are a total of 8 possible PUP selections using the 3 way and the push-pull pots. All selections have useful tones that kill and all genres of music except metal are possible. Note that with both dual mode bridge and neck PUPs on, they are in series (as opposed to a Tele/Strat/LP wiring where the PUPs are in parallel) which means the output is effectively doubled (i.e. 13.28k ohms) which is killer since it's like having a volume boost when engaging both PUPs as opposed to other guitars where engaging both PUPs makes the volume go down. As a footnote I had the bridge replaced with the Schaller Hannes bridge by a qualified luthier (Thankyou Peter Taylor, Chellee.com). I would rate the guitar 8-9 out of 10 before the Hannes, but now its a solid 10. Now, unplugged the guitar is very acoustically alive and outperforms my 56-U2 which I did not believe would be possible because it was not completely hollow like the 56-U2. The modified Hodad basically blows all my other guitars out of the water. Short of getting a custom built guitar to my specs, I don't think there's any off-the-shelf instrument that can give me the tonal performance and satisfaction as this Hodad. I might need to get a couple more (i.e. Blue sparkle and red sparkle) as spares. Except for the bridge issue, highly recommended.

Comments about Danelectro Hodad Electric Guitar:

I absolutely love this guitar. Not too heavy, great neck with easy access to the upper frets, and unique style make it one of my main go-to guitars. I rewired it so I have multiple single coil combinations instead of hummers, but that is just my style and not a reflection on the stock wiring. True to the original Dano tradition, with a touch of Mosrite, it is a great guitar, and for the price point, you can't go wrong.
