        Comments about D'Angelico EX-SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is a beautiful guitar, built well and just wonderful to look at. Tone is very satisfactory and great for jazz and blues through a clean channel. I use it mainly for amateur recording. I have no opinion as to road worthiness but the attention to detail is awesome. Playability is great with low action and no buzzes anywhere up or down the neck. Going to restring with flatwound strings so should warm up the tone even more. For the price, this is definitely a guitar worth having and playing for years to come.

          Comments about D'Angelico EX-SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

          Really I'd give this guitar a 4.5.

I've owned one of these for a year. I mainly use it to record and write songs on. The workmanship is flawless. As with a good archtop, every note and position will sound with equal volume with equal picking strength. It is extremely expressive for lead work compared to all my first name solid bodied guitars.

          Positives:

The look was breathtaking. But then, I love archtop guitars. The action is very low. Frets nice. Tuners great. Inlay work is well appointed. There is even inlay on the back of the headstock. It is on the edge of gaudy. The guitar pickups sound full, yet clean. If strummed with reasonable force (more on this later), they pickups are warm with distortion. The guitar is a fine jazz box and would really deliver some nice old style country lead guitar. Blues too.

Soundwise, this is not a guitar for everyone. Mr. D'Angelico built guitars for jazz and some country (Old Country) guitarists, not for thrash metal, hard rock, etc. Interestingly, light touch shredding seems to come across well. Effects pedals respond well to the signal from the guitar. Overall playing this guitar is more a coaxing of great sounds. Banging or slamming will not deliver much.

While the guitar is a high quality build, it isn't heavy duty compared to a good Les Paul, or Heritage, or Stratacaster. And it wasn't perfect. Very nice, but not there are some negatives:

I don't think the guitar will take a lot of abuse, either cosmetically, or physically.

The guitar came setup well action wise, but my first impression was the pickups were set close to the strings as my heavy picking would overdrive the pickups, but not in a good musical way. I lowered the pickups a few twists and that took care of it, but doing it robbed a good bit of the expression from the guitar. Then I realized that many jazz guitarists pick with their fingers like Wes Montgomery did. So then I put the pickups back up where they were, and adjusted my playing to a lighter touch, and all is well. If I want to go crazy on something, I will use one of my solid body guitars.

This might be a positive or a negative. The neck is not as wide and the strings are closer together than most Gibsons, Heritages, or most guitars. Not a problem once one adjusts a bit. Original D'Angelico guitars were known to have slimmer fretboards so there is a touch of lineage with this trait.

Despite being a thinline hollowbody with tone blocks, the guitar will feed back much more easily than the semi-hollowbody and solid body guitars I own. I do have fat hollow bodies that feed back more easily than the D'Angelico. Feeding back can be good or bad depending upon what you are doing with the guitar.

The last negative was that occasionally the tailpiece would "clack" onto the body of the guitar. Back in D'Angelico's day, guitarists didn't jump and dance around the stage. Tailpieces were anchored to the base of the guitar and slung forward loose toward the bridge. This guitar's tailpiece is like that. The "clack" sound was surprising and disturbing the first time it happened. I cured it with a 10 cent felt spacer from the hardware store. The unanchored tailpiece could pose a problem with players jumping around.

All in all, for the money this is a wonderful guitar. It has been very handy for recording many types of music. With it's expressiveness, it has delivered everything asked of it.

            Comments about D'Angelico EX-SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Bought without prior playing. Every bit as beautiful as the pictures. Terrific action. I have played for about a week and I was surprised at the clarity and warmth, yet it growls when dirtied up. Sounded glassy with a slide. More lightweight than other semis.

This guitar is a top quality instrument. D'angelico makes some the best guitar strings in the world, so I took a chance buying it before playing it and I'm glad I did. If this company made guitars, I would have to check them out. I have been playing over 40 years, and this guitar is good for every style. The craftsmanship is super.
