Great D'Angelico guitar with the 335 body, for a lot less than G*****. Extremely well made, well balanced, wonderful tone and sustain. Their really is no downside to this guitar. Very versatile country, jazz, blues, rock etc. What is not said in the description is the neck is a little wider (like acoustic width)than most but this makes chords much easier to play cleanly.(especially jazz chords and bends) The neck is not thick, it is a little thicker than a standard fender neck, but does not effect the tone.(great tone and sustain) These are personal preferences. So if you looking for a versatile guitar that has great tone and playability, here it is.

D'Angelico is back

The pickups are a bit dark for Rock but sound fine for jazz. If you like this body shape and don't mind a fat neck go for it.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series DC Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stopbar Tailpiece:

This is a nice instrument out of the box but clearly needed a little loving attention to get the most from it. My very experienced guitar tech set it up and put D'Addario EXP115s on and then neither of us wanted to put it down. I'm glad I put slightly heavier strings on than I usually play as this makes a lot of difference in the sound and power of this guitar. It can be used for all styles equally well and is outstanding for blues, jazz and rock. I expected the neck to perhaps be an issue but once the action and set up was complete, I would put this up against other top line models from other top US manufacturers. The guitar is made in South Korea to quality standards and specifications that the US based company clearly is checking and assuring.

My guitar tech of 30 years experience with some of the finest instruments in the industry was so impressed that he couldn't stop playing and showing it off. He's very picky about guitars so his interest in obtaining one for himself tells it all as he can play whatever he chooses.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series DC Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stopbar Tailpiece:

I've been playing guitar for ~17 years and never considered semi-hollow bodies. All the ones I've played just didn't feel right in my hands. And on the rare case they DID feel nice, they had a Gibson emblem on the headstock and cost upwards of $3000. I picked this guitar up on a whim and I was pleasantly surprised. Unplugged it sounds full and bright and plugged in, you get a sweet, warm sound that takes VERY well to gain. Finding the feedback sweet-spot is pretty easy and notes just hang out as long as you want them to. The pickups are on the hot side (hotter than my Strat anyways), so this is good for classic rock/jam-band stuff, blues, jazz, and anything where you'd want a warm tone with a little grit.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series DC Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stopbar Tailpiece:

I have never bought a guitar without playing it first...so this was a risk for me. As soon as I opened the case and picked it up my fear was gone. After a little tuning, it played just great (out of the box). The design and the construction are solid and it's looks are supreme. I have Les Pauls and Strats but this bridges the gap very nicely. Well done D'Angelico...and a big thanks to Musician's Friend for the quick service.

I've been trying out many guitars and types, but this one is a keeper. Beautiful sound, design and workmanship. I get compliments on it wherever I go. It's labeled with Made in Korea, but the Company must watch quality control very closely.

Very beautiful, plays so easy, sounds great. Just wish it didn't say made in Korea. Feels better than my ES 135. Wish they would have used some better looking knobs, and the input jack became loose after playing it 4 or 5 times. All I can say is look out G*****, maybe as good at half the price. Showed it to my son Sam, he played it for 2 hours solid. He loved it. We have Gibson's ES 135, Les Paul studio mahogany, Fender American Deluxe Strat 50th Anni., Mexican strats, G&L ASAT deluxe, SGR, and I feel it is just as good as any of them.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series DC Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stopbar Tailpiece:

I found this guitar to be very well made, with a beautiful art deco design theme. It sounded very good even for over-driven blues or rock solo tones. However, I had to return it to MFriend for one reason. I think the guitar came with 010 gauge strings, which I don't use. I replaced the strings with 009s. The weird thing was that the 009s felt like heavier gauge strings! I had to apply more pressure when picking and strumming than I do with my PRS Custom 22 and Gibson Lucille guitars. When I went back to those guitars I found myself picking and strumming too hard. I really wanted to keep the D'Angelico, but couldn't because of this weird situation.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series DC Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stopbar Tailpiece:

Bought the guitar after watching prices for a while. I wish the instrument had come with a trapeze tailpiece but for some reason they don't do that in the white guitars. Everything about the instrument was fine with the exception of the fret edges. Although they were dressed and smooth on the edges, they were not tapered to my taste and the edges of the frets were dragging against my fingers as I slid up the fret board. Not really a problem, a fret file and about fifteen minutes of time took care of the problem. Wouldn't recommend this for someone who is not experienced in working on guitars, but I've been doing my own set-ups and basic "tweaking" of my instruments for 40+ years. I really like the overall looks and feel of the instrument. I was surprised to find that the intonation was right on and did not need any adjustment. Put on a new set of 10-46 strings and went to playing. I play jobs about 2 to 3 times a week but don't really consider myself a professional. I'm retired and although I get paid for performing, I'm kind of living the dream and having a good time doing it. I've been playing Epi. Sheratons for years and prefer them over G***** 335's. The D'Angelico is very comparable. It's about 3X the cost of a Sheraton and 1/2 the cost of a Gibson. I guess you could say that it is right in the sweet spot as far as price is concerned. It also came with a well made plush lined case that fits the instrument. I'm very satisfied.
