I reviewed the Dean Boca 12-string over a year ago and am glad to report that my initial comments and excellent ratings still stand. The guitar has held up well and the action still amazes me. For an inexpensive specialty guitar, it really is a great value. In my previous review, I suggested the use of a compressor and equalizer with the Boca as a way of enhancing the sound and getting more vintage "jangle" out of the somewhat dark Dean humbuckers. I still stand by those comments, but after a year experimenting with the axe, I would like to make an additional suggestions for those seeking to achieve the vintage jangle of a Rickenbacker or Italia Rimini 12-string guitar. I no longer use the standard equalizer. I still use a compressor, but I have found an Electro-Harmonix Knockout pedal paired with the Dean Boca can really get some amazing results. The EH Knockout pedal is an attack equalizer with high-pass and low-pass filters and it makes humbuckers sound like single-coil pickups. Of course, your amp choice is still important. I like running the Boca through clean settings of Vox, Roland JC120, and Fender Twin amp simulations on my Line 6 POD. I hope this amendment to my initial review is helpful to those considering to purchase the Boca or for those who already own one.
Great standard features for the money. The finish (amber) is very nice. Although it is not on the quality level of a high-end Rickenbacker 12-string, I prefer the Boca's wider neck to the Rickenbacker. I've played a number of Rics in music stores, but never owned one. The action on the Boca is simply amazing. It's low and easy to play. No buzzing. The humbuckers are a bit dark for the vintage sound I'm trying to achieve.
It is certainly is a quality instrument and great value for the money.
This is an inexpensive specialty guitar for someone who wants an electric 12-string, but can't afford a Rickenbacker or Italia Rimini. That being said, it's an excellent value and certainly a great instrument for the money. The Boca 12-string has exceeded my expectations and satisfies my need for certain sounds.

When I first got this guitar, I absolutely adored it. I did minor set up work (the string height was too low, causing a little fret buzz), but the intonation was perfect out of the box. Like any 12 string, the first tuning is tune, stretch, retune, and repeat until solid (3X). The finish was perfect, and the construction was rock solid in the unit I got.

Unfortunately, I did return it for a refund. I tried a 45 minute set of Beatles tunes, and when standing, with the strap, the neck would dive to the floor because the body has almost zero weight. It was too much of a pain to keep it propped up with my playing hand after 15 minutes or so. Since I need a 12 string I can gig with, I had to part ways with it. I'm giving it a good rating for two reasons. 1) It plays and sounds great. 2) I would have kept it if using it just to record (ie - sitting down). So, I'd recommend it to a friend if his use was simply home recording. It is a good guitar, just not for use with a strap.

Excellent Value for the Money

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Of course I'd like a 12-string Rickenbacker or an Italia Rimini 12-string, but as fate would have it, I went the bargain route and bought the Dean Boca, and I must say, it really is quite a quality guitar and a bargain. Reviews seemed excellent for the guitar, and I can see why. The finish is beautiful, the Grover tuners are excellent and stable, and the neck feels great. The neck is much wider than a Rickenbacker, but I actually prefer it. I like the retro "jangle" sound these days, and I figured the Dean Boca could satisfy my desire. To be honest, the axe sounds great stock "as is". However, running it through a compressor can really make you love this inexpensive investment even more. Roger McGuinn runs his Rickenbacker 12-string through a Janglebox Compressor and (still, I believe) a Roland JC120 stereo amp. I've been running the Dean Boca through a Janglebox and Vox AC15 and getting excellent vintage sound results. The Boca humbuckers, by nature, will not get the sharp treble of a single-coil Rickenbacker. However, if you run the Boca through a graphic equalizer and/or work the tone on the amp, you can get amazingly close single-coil retro sound. I've been experimenting with several other compressors (Boss, MXR, and Digitech simulations)on my RP500 multi-effects unit and also getting some really excellent results. Before buying, I watched a few YouTube reviews and was worried when one guy said he had trouble getting and keeping it in tune. I've had no such trouble. It's best to tune a 12-string out from the "g" string anyways. In fact, when I received the guitar, it was almost in perfect tune after shipment. The biggest surprise? Besides the look and detail, the action is amazing. The neck plays beautifully. I just couldn't believe it--and I'm VERY picky. Intonation is solid (was tested). The balance of the guitar is a bit tricky, as pointed out in several reviews, but not a problem for me. The lack of individual pickup volume and tone controls is also not a problem for me. When running both pickups together, however, the tone control is less precision and can get muddy. This is my first experience with a Dean guitar, and I'm impressed. The Boca is a great specialty guitar for me, and I feel like it is a steal at the price. Five stars across the board (in its class) for me. Just a great bargain. Great addition to my sonic pallet.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

The best electric 12. Period.
What a beauty! As several people have noted, the pictures don't do it justice. We chose the amber burst, and it is simply gorgeous. The level of fit and finish is very high, and the only thing, literally, that I could find to do anything about in that regard was that the nut on the high-E side had a sharp corner. Ten seconds with a fine file solved that. The action at delivery was a tiny bit buzzy on the low-E side, so, raise the bridge half a turn, all the intonation was damn good, except the B strings required a touch, and then, sonic joy! Sounds amazing, feels amazing, great tone, great sustain, sounds good played acoustically, Grovers, D'Addario strings, solid mahogony body with a maple face, rock maple neck, maaan, this is something. And okay, it is head-heavy, I don't care. What do you expect with a small semi-hollow body and TWELVE Grovers, people? All that mass at the head adds to the sustain. All in all, a fine ,fine guitar. We love it.

Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar

By Wayne Knudson

from Vancouver, BC

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I have owned a Dean Boca for about 4 months and have spent a lot of time playing it. This is a fantastic little electric 12-string at a "steal" of a price. I have owned a Ricky 330-12, 360-12 and a Tom Petty 620-12 and with a good setup and some minor modifications the Dean Boca can hold it's own with the Ricky's at a fraction of the price. The neck on the Boca is easier to play than the narrower necks on the 330-12 or the 360-12 and very similar to the wider neck on the Tom Petty. The string slots on the nut of the Boca had to be re-cut a bit to lower the strings and make playing more comfotable. The stock humbucker pickups on the Boca are wound to about 16K which is way too hot for an electric 12-string. At 16K you loose that "jangle" that a good electric 12-string (Ricky) should have. I first replace the stock humbucker pickups with P-90 type pickups wound to about 8K that fit in humbucker mounting ring. The "jangle was back. For an experiment I then converted the stock pickup from 16K humbuckers to 8K single coils by grounding one of the coils. The "jangle" with the converted stock pickups was closer to the "Ricky jangle". This is a fantastic little electric 12-string (especially for the price) and a great alternative if you can not justify spending a couple of grand on a Ricky.
For my needs the Dean Boca has everything that an electric 12-string should have. Two pickups, pickup selector switch, master volume and master tone. The six saddle bridge intonates surprisingly well with 12 strings. The truss rod work very well for adjusting the neck curvature. The machine heads are good quality and guitar stay in tune surprisingly well for a 12-string.
The quality is excellent. The materials, fit and finish are excellent. After a good setup and a few mnior modifications the playability of the Boca is excellent for a 12-string.
The value is absolutely outstanding.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Aside from saying this is a nice guitar that sounds great, had no quality issues, and plays like a dream (note bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and great sustain), I'd like to let you kmow:

If you buy a hardshell case, I REALLY suggest getting the Dean "DHS EVO" case. You can find it online. This guitar is the same length as a Gibson Les Paul, but the body is about 3/8" wider and will NOT fit in an LP Case (I tried it).

Getting a case that is too large to fit is just as bad as having no case at all (sometimes worse). In the event of a drop, I can tell you the wrong size case will result in damage to the guitar (it never ends well).

The full specs for this guitar are available at the Dean Website. I am very impressed with the materials, workmanship (flawless on mine), and how nice it is to play it. I'm a Les Paul and ES-335 guy, and I could play this thing all day long. It's also pretty light - coming in at 7.4lbs.

I plan on buying a second one for my son to use with his band.

Great value. Iv'e been playing since 1973 and own too many guitars - but this was a great purchase to fill a nitch. Great for playing old school 12-string blues, or nailing the Supertramp sound.

Great value in an electric 12string

By Guy Lester

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Let's face it, few of us not dedicated to the Roger McGuinn sound need an electric 12 string. If that is your main sound, save up and buy a Rickenbacker. But I compared this to the DiPinto, which I liked, and the Italia, which is also good, as well as the Burns. and there was not enough difference to warrant the extra money for an instrument that I will use as an occasional ax in my musical toolbox. I plan to upgrade the controls -- perhaps coil splitting and definitely separate volume and tone controls for each pickup -- but I find this a cost effective platform from which to work. I definitely do not feel like I settled for less but rather that I made a smart selection. Give me free Ric, my friends at Musician's Friend, and I will treasure it. But I am happy with this purchase.
The features are a little spartan but based on the price very much in line. It is missing the ability to set intonation separately for each of the paired strings.
I received this guitar yesterday and went over it closely. I found nothing wrong and no shoddy workmanship.
Here is where the Dean Boca 12 really shines. It really is very much better than you might imagine for a guitar at this price point. The finish is well applies with no lumps, bumps or sags. The frets are well dressed at the edges of the fret board. The setup out of the box was almost spot on and felt quite easy to play (especially considering that this is a 12 string). The pots and three-way switch feel like good quality. The neck is reasonably comfortable for a 12 -- not quite as good as my Breedlove but so much better than the junk with off-brand names made in China sold on eBay. The pickups sound pretty good and are hum-free.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

This is a good guitar for the price. The finish (amber) on mine is flawless and the sound is similar to considerably higher end instruments. The workmanship left a bit to be desired. There were areas inside the F Holes that were un-sanded, but i like it enough that i kept it and sanded it myself. Mine is intonated nicely, and holds a tune better than other 12 strings i have owned. My biggest gripe is that it is headstock heavy which is to be expected from an instrument like this one. I compensated by removing one of the neck bolts and adding a strap pin (top left bolt as you are playing the guitar). Putting my strap on this pin changed the balance drastically.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

This guitar sounds pretty good. Very little set-up.The one thing that bothered me was the visible glue looking in the f-holes. But the main reason I bought this guitar was for the width of the neck, wider than usual 17/8 inches at nut. I made it a six string. I have big fingers. It seems like guitars today have narrower necks. I thinking of buying another one for back-up.

SWEET 12 STRING

By Southerntroubador

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I had read a few reviews before I decided to buy this gem! When I first received it (in excellecnt condition) I loved it. My only issue was with a replacement set of strings. The two G-strings would tune close, but be off enough to sound bad. All I had to do was make sure the string that was not the octave was a WOUND string. After that no more problems with the tuning. That was over a year ago, I love it even more now. Songwriter/singer/musician- Ronnie Cryingsky.

Musicians Friend used Boca 12

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I was looking for an acoustic 12 when I spotted this gem in the used section. Not sorry at all I purchased it. Tremendous value, neck is good, tuned write up to a440 with strings provided. don't know what the strings are but seem fairly light, I ordered a set of Earnie Ball slinky 12 's thinking I would have to change, so far the slinkys are still in the bag. Seems to be holding tune very well. I keep all my guitars in the music room which is heated and they all hang from the head stock in holders. I have found this to be much better than leaving them in the cases and also if you can grab and play, you play each of them more often. Rated 8 out of 10 overall only because I have nothing to compare it too in a 12 string electric, so there is probably something out there in a 10 range. But the action on this guitar approaches that of my martin f-50, which is better than my gibson or my strat
Only feature I would add is a separate tone and volume control for each pickup no matter which combination you have selected. Not a biggie as there are so many ways to set tone/volume/pickup switch now that it is hard to remember how you liked it best.
unbelievable for a 12 in this price range and as good as my 63 martin F-50, my 70 strat and my 2004 Gibson j200
What can I say I bought a Musician's Friend used. Rating was slightly used. If anyone ever had there hands on this guitar I could not detect it. Not a scratch, not a dent, nothing wrong that I can see. I waited a week of heavy playing before writing this review to see if I could find something wrong. So far nothing

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I had been wanting a 12 string guitar for a long time and stumbled upon this one while browsing Musicians Friend. Reviews were solid and I am a sucker for hollow bodies. I was really looking for a full bodied dreadnaught style 12 string but after seeing this one listed and its fantastic price, I decided to try it. I am so glad I did! First impression out of the box was one of a kid at Christmas. I was giddy before I played it!! This guitar is beautiful!! Color was just what I was hoping for. It matches my Heritage Cherry Sunburst Les Paul perfectly. The finish is super nice. The guitar "feels" quality if that makes sense. After a quick tune, playing was fun and the sound is fantastic. It can be played totally acoustic but sound is understandably low. Plug it in and great things happen! Add a chorus pedal and the sound is out of this world. I did read in the reviews that the guitar is neck heavy. This is true but not un-bearable. Not a deal breaker by any means. I am very happy with the purchase. This is my first Dean guitar but may not be my last. Get one of these before the price goes up!

Hard to beat for the price, or more ...

    By Jim Burt

    from CO

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Listed as used, I could not detect any evidence it had ever been touched. Naturally, the first thing I did while tuning was break the high G string, like every other 12-string I've ever had. Fortunately, I had also gotten a couple extra sets of the D'Addarios this ships with. Using the bridge pickup with a "Nice Crunch" on my old Boss GT-3 provides a very reasonable approximation of the Byrds jingle-jangle effect I was looking for on a quick Mr Tambourine Man opener. On the neck pickup, it's pretty easy to get the sound a little too muddy for my taste, but that's a pretty common 12-string problem. So far, it's far exceeded my expectations for sound quality, and while I haven't experienced other 12-string electrics, and could never justify the cost for a Ric, it sure blows the socks off the acoustic 12's I've had in the past, even my well-used Ovation Ultra. The Humbuckers have a nice growl when you get serious and crank it up, but still have a nice clean sound on lower levels. While I lack the expertise to start messing with bridge or truss rod setups, so far I haven't seen any need to have it tweaked. Looking inside the body through the F-holes it's a tad ugly, but who cares? All in all, I think it's a great value, especially the "used" black finish unit I got, and I'm sure I'll enjoy plunking around with it for a long time.
In sum, it exceeded my expectations, especially for the price.

Took delivery of my sunburst Dean Boca 12last week, and after a bit of tweaking (raised the bridge, relaxed the truss rod a bit) it played very well. Action is great, tone is wonderful. Sounds hottest with just the bridge pickup playing, of course, but with some EQ and compression,. all settings can be made to sound just wonderful. It's a great looing axe as well. Will be enjoying it for many years. Will probably use it on gigs in the fairly nearr future.
Quality seems just fine throughout. Like I said, I had to tweak it a bit to get all notes to ring without fretting out, but that's pretty normal for any new guitar I get.
You can't go wrong for the price. Well worth more.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I just got this 12 string due to not wanting to spend over 2ooo.oo on a RIC, so I took a chance. It came shipped tight as a drum was in very good to excellent condition I tuned it up and away we went, It sounds and plays really well for the price and where it's manufactured. Maybe the American Guitar Companies should start producing this type of instrument here in the US and put Americans back to work.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I agree with all of the comments on this guitar. It is an excellent guitar with good sound, good action and (at least on mine) nice workmanship.

The problem that we've all noticed is the balance of the guitar. I've solved it by putting on locking strap locks and hooking the rear of the guitar strap to my belt with a cat collar. I can stand with no hands on the guitar and it stays straight and level.

WIth the balance issue resolved, the guitar is perfect for me.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

THE PICTURE DOES NOT REALLY GIVE THIS GUITAR THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES.I GOT THE AMBER SUNBURST. WHEN IT ARRIVED IT HAD A KIND OF ORANGE LOOK TO IT.I LOVE IT.I READ ALL THE REVIEWS.I STARTED PLAYING WHEN I WAS 10. THERE IS NOTHING I DON`T LIKE ABOUT THIS GUITAR.iT IS NOT TO HEAVY. THE NECK IS NOT TOO WIDE. YES, THE WIRES SHOW A LITTLE. THIS IS ONE ACTION PACKED,SLAMMAN,HOT WIRED, LITTLE AX. I REALLY LIKE THE FACT THAT IT IS SMALLER THAN MOST 12 STRING ELECTRICS.I COULD GO ON BUT WHY? GET ONE WHILE YOU CAN. I DID NOT FIND ANY 12 STRING ELECTRIC GUITARS IN THE ORLANDO AREA.I THINK ONE STORE HAD A RICK FOR $2,5000. JUST BUY THE DARN THING!!!!!ROBERT FROM ORLANDO FL

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Great looking guitar. Great sounding . Great price . Only 2 criticisms . As pointed out in previous reviews , it is a little neck heavy and wires are visable thru the f hole . Other than that , I couldn't be happier .
