I reviewed the Dean Boca 12-string over a year ago and am glad to report that my initial comments and excellent ratings still stand. The guitar has held up well and the action still amazes me. For an inexpensive specialty guitar, it really is a great value. In my previous review, I suggested the use of a compressor and equalizer with the Boca as a way of enhancing the sound and getting more vintage "jangle" out of the somewhat dark Dean humbuckers. I still stand by those comments, but after a year experimenting with the axe, I would like to make an additional suggestions for those seeking to achieve the vintage jangle of a Rickenbacker or Italia Rimini 12-string guitar. I no longer use the standard equalizer. I still use a compressor, but I have found an Electro-Harmonix Knockout pedal paired with the Dean Boca can really get some amazing results. The EH Knockout pedal is an attack equalizer with high-pass and low-pass filters and it makes humbuckers sound like single-coil pickups. Of course, your amp choice is still important. I like running the Boca through clean settings of Vox, Roland JC120, and Fender Twin amp simulations on my Line 6 POD. I hope this amendment to my initial review is helpful to those considering to purchase the Boca or for those who already own one.
Great standard features for the money. The finish (amber) is very nice. Although it is not on the quality level of a high-end Rickenbacker 12-string, I prefer the Boca's wider neck to the Rickenbacker. I've played a number of Rics in music stores, but never owned one. The action on the Boca is simply amazing. It's low and easy to play. No buzzing. The humbuckers are a bit dark for the vintage sound I'm trying to achieve.
It is certainly is a quality instrument and great value for the money.
This is an inexpensive specialty guitar for someone who wants an electric 12-string, but can't afford a Rickenbacker or Italia Rimini. That being said, it's an excellent value and certainly a great instrument for the money. The Boca 12-string has exceeded my expectations and satisfies my need for certain sounds.

When I first got this guitar, I absolutely adored it. I did minor set up work (the string height was too low, causing a little fret buzz), but the intonation was perfect out of the box. Like any 12 string, the first tuning is tune, stretch, retune, and repeat until solid (3X). The finish was perfect, and the construction was rock solid in the unit I got.

Unfortunately, I did return it for a refund. I tried a 45 minute set of Beatles tunes, and when standing, with the strap, the neck would dive to the floor because the body has almost zero weight. It was too much of a pain to keep it propped up with my playing hand after 15 minutes or so. Since I need a 12 string I can gig with, I had to part ways with it. I'm giving it a good rating for two reasons. 1) It plays and sounds great. 2) I would have kept it if using it just to record (ie - sitting down). So, I'd recommend it to a friend if his use was simply home recording. It is a good guitar, just not for use with a strap.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Let's face it, buying an instrument online can be a pig-in-a-poke. You've got to trust your online dealer to carry, and present, the best stuff. The Dean Boca Electric is a VERY well-built guitar. BIG BONUS: It actually stays in tune! And, it sounds great. The best sounds I'm getting out of it are with the bridge pickup adjusted as high as you can get away with, and the neck pickup "faded back" a skosh. Use the middle position (both pickups), and you get all the jangle of the bridge pickup, with just a touch of warmth from the neck. This axe plays great all the way up the neck, and is intoned well.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Very nicely-built instrument. I don't often give 5 stars, however, there is just NOTHING wrong with this axe. It's nicely built, stays in tune (which is HUGE with a 12-string), and plays pretty darned nice. It takes some getting used to, just due to the width of the fingerboard, I also play mandolin, bouzouki and mandola, so I am accustomed to double string courses, but, even so, it's taking some time to play precisely.

Just prior to my purchase, I went to the local store to try out a couple of Gretsch electric 12s, and was non-plussed by the build quality and sound. I figured, "well, if the Boca doesn't sound good, I have the option to return it." I was so pleasantly surprised, I decided to keep it, and, to boot, the Boca costs less than half what the Gretsches do. Both makes are Korean made, and I tend to respect Korean build quality. Chances are, the are all made in the same factory anyhow.

Pickups sound great, although the neck pickup is pretty worthless on its own. The Boca does sound decent using BOTH pickups, or with the bridge pickup only.

Dean has a winner here, both in quality, and bang-for-the buck.

A tip for you, should you buy: Due to its nature, this guitar is headstock-heavy, and you would be wise to either purchase a strap that has enough friction to stay in place, or, as I've done, order the D'Addario Planet Waves Quick-Release Guitar Strap System (costs less than a cup of foo-foo coffee), and bring that pup into balance.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I would really give this guitar 2.5 stars, but you can't give half stars.

I've had my Boca for a few years. I always like the sound of 12 strings and thought I would give this a shot because the price was so low.

The neck is very wide compared to most electric 12 strings, that's the good part. The quality wasn't so great. Lots of buzzing when it came. Adjustment fixed some of it but not all. There were frets that weren't level.

It sounds OK using the bridge pickup or the bridge/neck combined. The neck pickup by itself I found to be too muddy sounding. The body looked nice but I'm not sure how much the hollow body helps the sound. It's kind of cheaply built and the sound is a little tinny. Might actually have been better with a solid body.

That said, it's not a bad instrument depending on what you want it for. If you just going to dabble occasionally with a 12 string, it's pretty good and a nice price. But if you think you might want a 12 string as a serious part of your arsenal, spend a little more money for something else. There are other options without spending well over a grand for a Ric.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I've had my 12-string Boca for a few years now, Craftmanship was top-notch. Head heavy, sure. It's a 12-string. Low action, great tuners provide reliable tuning when playjng live. You can't beat the jangle with new strings... I've taken mine to my loyal local music store (Rentals and lessons keeping them alive.. along with a bunch of Brand X lameness hanging on the walls), and told them them to market this 12-string guitar line. The Dean Boca 12-string series, in any finish, will amaze any player and make any owner like me an advocate for this guitar. Get one! Then tell someone. No S.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

I only received the guitar 2 days ago and didn't have a chance to spend some substantial time with it yet.
Out of the box it was out of tune. Not that I expected to find it in tune but I read several other reviews for this and other guitars, here and elsewhere how the guitar just received was in tune, ready to play.
The neck relief and 12th fret action seem to be OK. So seems to be the action at the nut.
I did a quick tune up and played it shortly. The unplugged sound is pretty good. Plugged in, it sounds good but nothing out of the ordinary.
There is a little buzzing but I think that comes from the bridge, from the infamous retainer spring wire. I'll need to investigate that more.
The neck feels very good. It is wider than on 6 string guitars but that's a positive, at least for me and my fat fingers. I do have to get used to it though. But in the end I prefer this width for a 12 string.
The Grover tuners feel good and operate smoothly.
The fretboard is much darker than what is shown in the pictures. That's another good thing as I will not have to ebonize it now.
The frets could have been better polished. They look polished but feel a little rough when bending. I will address this when I go thru the full setup.
Now for the "not so good" part. The neckplate has a smudge that I tried to clean up and I can't. It is probably some dried up glue of polyurethane that was used for the finish. I tried scraping it with my fingernail and it looks like very little came off. I don't want to use anything harder to scrape so I do not damage the chrome plating. I contacted Dean. Maybe they can suggest something to help remove this smudge or maybe they'll send a replacement neckplate. Interestingly, a couple of the tuner buttons seems to have the same kind of smudge but much smaller.
While the black finish on the back and sides appears good, on the front there are some fine abrasion marks between the bridge and the upper F-hole. I don't think it will be a problem with a good polish.

Saw a couple of bad reviews due to this model being "top heavy". This is what I did with my DEAN. I relocated the strap button to the neck plate screw. I used the screw furthest from the strap button. Just remove one screw, refasten the strap button and it will be LESS top heavy. Not perfect but much improved balance. Also, be sure to use a strap that is NOT slick on the backside. I prefer an leather strap with some roughness to it. Much easier to play.

Comments about Dean Boca 12-String Electric Guitar:

Aside from saying this is a nice guitar that sounds great, had no quality issues, and plays like a dream (note bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and great sustain), I'd like to let you kmow:

If you buy a hardshell case, I REALLY suggest getting the Dean "DHS EVO" case. You can find it online. This guitar is the same length as a Gibson Les Paul, but the body is about 3/8" wider and will NOT fit in an LP Case (I tried it).

Getting a case that is too large to fit is just as bad as having no case at all (sometimes worse). In the event of a drop, I can tell you the wrong size case will result in damage to the guitar (it never ends well).

The full specs for this guitar are available at the Dean Website. I am very impressed with the materials, workmanship (flawless on mine), and how nice it is to play it. I'm a Les Paul and ES-335 guy, and I could play this thing all day long. It's also pretty light - coming in at 7.4lbs.

I plan on buying a second one for my son to use with his band.

Great value. Iv'e been playing since 1973 and own too many guitars - but this was a great purchase to fill a nitch. Great for playing old school 12-string blues, or nailing the Supertramp sound.
