When I saw this axe about a year ago I couldn't believe it and when I purchased the EVO it was available in a few different colors and I chose the tranparent black. First off the quality is UNBELIEVABLE, I just knew for the price I wasn't going to get anything amazing, but it was more than I'd imagined. The only problem I've had since I bought mine was the string buzzing on the lower E. I made some adjustments (it took a while) and she's fine. I play some heavy stuff so I needed an axe that could hold up to some retarded punishment and this axe is @#$% near bulletproof. The most amazing thing about it is the sound. The stock pickups were the first thing I was planning to switch out. I was planning to wait until the axe was broke in, but it's been a year and I have no desire to change them out. I've always used the Dimebucker or Emg's, but I promise this stock set is as heavy and with a pull of the pot you've got single coil action! WOW! If you're looking at it you'd be doody head if you didn't at least try it out before dropping 2k on a similar axe. If anything you can buy this and upgrade all the parts and still save thousands (think about it)! I've had it a year and I have 5 axes now (all are tuned different) and this one is my favorite! If I wasn't a struggling musician I'd get another.

I bought mine 3 years ago, I already had a Fender Strat and wanted a Les Paul type of guitar but not wanted to pay the big bucks for a real Les Paul, I tested various guitars and definitely the EVO was the best. I have to admit the guitar has lost some of its quality in 3 years of sporadic use (I do not play live). But for that price is a great intermediate guitar or a second guitar. Now in a more detailed description:Looks: Probably the best feature of the guitar, it looks like an expensive guitar.Electronics: Decent, the pick ups are kind of weak, but again for the price?Set Up: Very bad, the action was terrible, but fixable?Versatibility : To be fair is more than I expected but do not expect to see it in the hands of a professional guitar player.

    Work of Art

I got this guitar with the quilt black finish on it for my 12th Birthday. Almost 8 years later, I'm still in love with it. It plays really smooth and can fit just about any style you like, which is good because I play a lot of them. When the toggle switch is up, it makes an amazing blues sound. With it down, it will make anything from classic rock to metal. I just can express enough how awesome this guitar is. I recommend it to just about anyone.

    Just awesome

This guitar is just amazing! For the price you get an excellent quality instrument that sounds just as good as it looks! I have the Flamed Amber Burst and it is quite striking. Solid Mahogany body with a flamed maple top with a mahogany set neck adds tone and sustain that is incredible. The pickups are good on it they are of medium/high output and harmonics are easily achieved. I am planning to replace the pups with the GFS Zebra Crunchy rails.

    Dean EVO Special Trans Amberburst.

This is a beautiful guitar! Not only does it look great, but it plays great too. It has a special v neck at the joint and this makes the high frets really easy to get to. It sounds awesome and has great sustain. It has a really fast neck too! I love this guitar. The only reason I gave it a nine overall is because it only has the two control knobs. I'm used to four knobs. I would definitely recommend this guitar to anyone who wants a great guitar at an awesome price! Buy it!!!

    Sounds Awesome...Plays Rough

    By Phil Brittain

This guitar is a real beauty. Mine is gorgeous even if it wasn't a scratch and dent. The back of the neck feels like silk and the strings take a long time to get that "old" feel to them. The split coils are very versatile. The sustain is unbelievable. Now the downside...the pickups are not grounded well enough and are frankly not powerful enough for my tastes. Then again, I use Carvin M22SD pickups, which are one of the most powerful pickups known to man. The hardware is simply awful. I've had to replace both strap screws. It's in the middle of rewiring, partially because it was never properly grounded. The wire to the input jack fell off. The guitar experiences too much microphonic feedback and the action has never been very good...compared to a Gibson. A good luthier can remedy that situation though. At first I would have given the guitar all high marks across the board, but the quality stink compared to my Gibson and Jackson that were made in the USA.

    Veddy nice....I like

These Dean EVO Specials are fantastic. They look like quality guitars. More so than the Les Paul Studio. I slapped Gibson '57 Classic Plus in here and it sounds like a $3000 Les Paul. It's just as solid for a quarter of the price.

    Why Pay More?

    By Crow-f.dsr

I play the Evo through a 100 Watt Vox Valvetronix and there isn't a single sound I cannot achieve (classic rock, metal, alternative). I gave the features a low rating because it only has a few features, but they are high quality features and there's no need to replace any of the stock parts. The sustain is incredible. My non-musician friends say it's beautiful, and my guitarist friends love to grab it and play every time I take a break. It is heavy, though, so if you plan to stand for long periods, invest in a comfortable strap. I sold a 1990's Fender Strat Plus to buy the Dean, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. If you want great tone and high quality without frills and a huge price tag, this is your axe.

    great guitar

    By Anonymous

This isn't just a great guitar for the price, it's a great guitar period. Comfortable and easy to play, great fit and finish, came from the factory set up and ready to play, but eventually I lowered the action a bit and it's even better. Finish is amazing. I have the flamed top, not the quilt and I've never seen flame book-ended quite like this,it's almost seamless. I've seen others not so perfect, just the luck of the draw on that I guess. I didn't think much of the coil tap feature before buying, but with the standard 3 position switch AND the coil taps you can get just about any sound imaginable. Quality guitar at a reasonable price.

    Great Guitar

    By Redemption91

    from Red Lion, PA

The pickups are excellent and I love the neck. The only complaint I have is this guitar is really heavy, and after playing a show your shoulder will hurt for another hour. Other than that, this guitar is great for playing chill melodies, or thrashing some heavy metal. It'll take anything you can dish out.

    Best Guitar I've Owned!

    By Xtremidy

    from Sheldon, IA

I've had my Evo for about a year now and have beat the crap out of it, and it just keeps on going. The stock pickups put out a tone that, I think, would easily compare to a pair of Seymour Duncans. I play with a hard rock/metal band and there has not been a sound that I haven't been able to achieve with it. No matter the size of the amp, the EVO always sounds incredible. I traded my Fender Hot Rodded American Strat for my EVO. It has been the best piece of equipment in my setup. The only thing I would change on it is, instead of the Dean pickups, a pair of EMG's would feel right at home in the body of this guitar.
