For the price, the Exotica gives you plenty of nice touches. The Grovers and abalone dot markers are upgrades compared to other guitars in this price range. The flame maple looks great. However, maple tops are not the best choice for acoustic guitars, especially when laminated. The tone is considerably brighter and colder than spruce-top guitars. So, there is a sacrifice of tone for looks on the FM Exotica. Also, while it may be more of a personal opinion, it seems like the dark brown neck is a mismatch look for the transparent colored bodies. Overall though, you'll be hard-pressed to find this much value in an acoustic-electric for this price range. If your primary usage will be plugged in, then the maple top may be less of a factor for you. If you're looking for more of an acoustic guitar that will be plugged in only occasionally, you may want to consider looking elsewhere for a spruce top guitar.

I've owned the Blue FM for over three years. It sounded pretty good at the store when I bought it, even with bad strings, and I liked the beautiful finish, so I figured with good strings I'd be OK, and it goes with the decor of my living room. From the beginning it was somewhat hard to tune. The built-in tuner never has given me a true tuning. I tried to gig with it, but the electronics are not up to snuff. I found out that I have to change strings quite often to keep the tone bright and keep the strings tunable. The lower tone strings tend to flatten out after a short time. I use the same strings on all my acoustic guitars, Martin SP mediums. I can keep the same strings on my old beat-up Yamaha for a year and never have problems with tone and tuning. Likewise on my Ovation, which I use the most for gigging. I do have a similar tuning problem with my Takamine, but to a much lesser extent. I've kept the action medium to low and don't get buzz. Over the first year or so, I noticed that the tuning slowly became untrue from the Nut to the first fret. So right now I have to capo to get good tuning for playing. Also, it slowly developed an internal "buzz", that I finally figured out was the battery case vibrating. I fixed that by wrapping the battery with paper to put pressure on the battery case when it is latched in. All in all, with attention, I can keep the guitar in working order, enough to goof around in the living room. And it still looks good sitting in the corner. But...we are changing our decor to Green! So now I have to figure out what to do with this guitar! Anyone want to buy it?

Extremely durable... bad tone

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is very, very durable... I have left it outside in freezing weather, it's been dropped on concrete and it has been thrown in the trunk of a car (on many occasions). I have taken it on tour before as well, despite the inferior sound this instrument has, and it survived a handful of sketchy situations. It is made out of maple though, and is all laminate... meaning, no solid woods and a poor choice for acoustic guitar wood to begin with. When plugged in it sounds like chunky plastic, essentially nothing like an acoustic guitar. I would not recommend it for the price (or really at all). You may love something about it though, so check it out for yourself. But compare it to any solid wood, spruce top guitar and the difference is painful. Even compared to other laminate guitars this one falls short of anything but thin cheesy tone. It is admittedly easy to play despite it's obnoxious size, so that is a plus for some.I got one of these around 8 years ago, and at the time it's funky look and durable body suited my needs just fine (as i was really still learning). Once I later started to clue in about acoustic guitar tones this guitar was a disappointment to me, and was almost impossible to record with. I ended up borrowing a budget Washburn from my brother and it sounded much better. However the Washburn fell apart in a relatively short time while this Dean is still intact. If you like cheesy thin tone, are into funky looking guitars, are extremely rough on instruments or are really into acoustic electrics, check this out. However, if you are interested in being serious about playing the acoustic guitar and are willing to take care of your instrument, go for a solid wood, spruce top guitar and skip the electronics. Electric guitars were invented for a reason...

Exotica FM

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar a little over two months ago and can't put it down. I originally bought this guitar as a "beater" , a guitar I could take camping and what not....but it's so much more. It is so easy to play, the action is great. The strings rest just slightly above the fretboard. It has a very strong construction, and stays in tune amazingly. It's also a very beautful guitar...pictures do not do it justice at all. It sounds great unplugged...very nice medium warm tone. Plugged in it seems to lose it's tone. I have a variety of amps including acoustic amps but it seems to sound it's best if played through a very basic pa system. I won't gig with this guitar....I'll stick to my Taylor's but like I said I can't seem to put it down. Very good guitar for it's price. I think it's worth more than what you'll pay for it. Very good guitar for any range player. If you're looking for a guitar that is strong, looks great, and plays well this is the guitar for you. I would recomend it to anyone.

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a great guitar if you don't have a lot of money to throw around and want a decent sound. When I first bought it, I changed the strings to phosphor bronze and that helped mellow the sound out because it sounded so so so bright, I almost sent it back. Then I had to lower the action a bit, so it is easy to play. I like the grover tuners. It stays in tune fairly well. However, and I was surprised about this....it sounds like crap when its amp'd. Tinny....I had to spend a lot of time to adjust the amp and the eq on the guitar to where I could stand it. So, this guitar has a a better unplugged sound than plugged. The end result? Its my living room guitar and its pretty. My 16 year old Jasmine, which is falling apart, had a better sound from the start....so. Its not a bad guitar, but almost worth the price that I paid for it. I paid for the flame maple, grover tuners, and the ablalone inlays that was the difference.

I'm in love

By Lucasm

from San Antonio

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar with my 2007 tax refund just to expand my guitar skills on. I or friends who see it can't get over its very elegant look of the wood. The initial reason I bought this guitar was because it is extremely playable, allowing quick, electric guitar like playing on an acoustic guitar. The strings rest a minimal distance from the frets. Out of all the guitars I tried, I settled on this one because it was the most playable I have ever played. It's perfect for me after over a year of owning it.

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

i really like this guitar. i have played some show with it, and it sounds great. the strings are close the fret board, so it's very easy for my little hands to play some tricky chords. i think it's great for the price, of course if money was no object any one would choose something even better, but i couldn't be happier with this one!

bad bracing on a perfect guitar

By John Richards

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had one of these for two years and it was the perfect guitar. Amazing sounds, action and finish. Then the top warped so that the strings were over 1/4" from the frets. Dean gave me a new one, saying that they knew about a bracing problem. The new one weas perfect for about 6 months, then the top warped nad the strings are way above the frets. If you plan to buy one, plan to get all your recording and playing done quickly. Other than that, it is one of the most wonderful guitars ever made.

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have owned this guitar for around 2 and a half years (the transparent red one) and it's still my favorite. I own 3 other guitars including a Taylor 314ce, and this one still goes on the road with me. The pickups and the preamp work beautifully through both acoustic amps and PA systems. You can't find a better acoustic for your money anywhere!!

I am very satisfied!!

By WorshipGuy

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I didn't know what to expect when I opened the box... It is a beautiful guitar and has good action... I do not believe it is all maple though the front and back is for sure. I really enjoy playing this guitar, and I put some Elixirs on her and it is SWEET... You will have to put a strap button on it which takes no time at all! ENJOY!

BUY THIS GUITAR!

By Prince N8

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

When it comes to this price range in guitars, you can't beat a Dean Exotica Flamed Maple Acoustic/Electric. It's such a smooth playing guitar, and it sounds wonderful. But of course it would, it has that specific maple sound that you want. And even if you don't know it, you do want that sound, you just haven't quite experienced it yet. ENJOY!

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just got this guitar a week ago and i love it, it has a great well balanced tone, for a kicka** price. if you're looking at something rather inexpensive, i definitely recommend it. I have played a lot of acoustics and this one gives the gibson and martins a competition, i think the dean plays just as well! May i add very beautiful!

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've owned this guitar for 6 months now, and I am completely in love with it! I own that natural finished version. The flamed maple is unbelievable! The white binding around the body and neck is near flawless. The abalone inlay work is stunning. This guitar has a very smooth sound. It has a wonderful treble sound without being "bright". The bass is very tight, but not boomy. There is not as much bass end as a larger acoustic, but it helps give this axe a voice all its own. This guitar could sell for MUCH more than it costs, and I'd still have to have one. There is a very slight fret buzz on fat open E string when strummed very hard, but I attack the strings harder than most. The string tension is wonderfully loose in standard tuning, allowing me to bar chords far up the neck with little trouble.

Comments about Dean Exotica FM Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for about a year and I love the sound and looks. I recently bought the performer Key Largo and I must say this one sounds better. Dean needs to work on the preamp. I have played with it plugged in and I am very dissatisfied with the electronics. Overall it is a great guitar, especially for a budget.
