I recieved mine the other day and opening the box to see my guitar it was a nice surprise to see the guitar in "ready to play" condition. It really does need the turners changed to somthing a little nicer but hey, you get what you pay for!! This by all means is a nice guitar. I have a Fender and a Gibson so by comparision it lacks a little in craftsmenship. But overall it's pretty decent. I changed the tuners and put a hotter pick-up in the bridge position. (A dimebucker which you can also order from this site). I work in a local music store (the guitar tech guy) so I've seen and worked on my share of guitars!! The hardware on this dean guitar I would rate a 7 out of 10. It will wear and last a long time. (Except the tuners I will rate them a 3 out of 10) The neck which is one of the most important parts of a guitar is surprisingly very well made and the frets were polished nicely and has very good action. The underside of the neck is very smooth and finished well also! The stock pick-ups were decent but would recommend a differnt one for the bridge, but thats just me. The selector switch is good and solid and the volume and tone potiometers (pots) were smooth and not scratchy when plugged in and playing. The body of the guitar is finished nicely with only very few minor and I mean Minor flaws that dont amount to a hill of beans!! Mine had a couple of very small scratches on it and that was only if you were loocking really close under a light. The finish on the body is very delightful, but does seem to get scratches and dings in it pretty easy. The top-coat is a brittle poly or arcrilc urethene. But hey, guitars look great with some battle scars on them!!!! But anyway, overall for the little amount of money for this guitar its well worth it!!! The awsome shape itself is worth the money. The balance issue that Ive read from other reviewers has not been a problem for me. I use wide leather guitar straps that dont slide around like nylon straps do.(A tip to remember) and I would advise to put strap locks on this guitar to, the strap buttons that are on this guitar are placed in a not so traditional location. Whether your a beginner or in a band or giging this guitar will hold it's own!! With only a few minor modifcations this guitar will reach limits of other guitars costing much, much more. Try it out!!! The price is right!! ROCK-ON!!!!

I enjoy this guitar and have only one complaint. I ordered the natural finish based on the photo I saw on Musicians Friend, but the finish is not even close. I was hoping it would look stained with the wood grain showing through, like the photo, but instead, it's a dark toffee color and very little wood grain shows through. It looks like a kind of ugly brown. I ordered my son a Dean Vendetta in the same finish, and it is also an ugly brown. I would recommend you get the black. Otherwise, this is a nice guitar. It plays well. It's surprisingly light, and not as headstock heavy as I expected it to be. Can't go wrong for the price.

Great Guitar For The Price

By David Goodwin

from Michigan

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

I love this guitar regardless of its lower end quality. It's been the only guitar I've played for the past year since I got it. I love the feel to it, produces a better tone than my epiphone/warlock/ibanez, and it's super light making it easier to carry it around from jam session to jam session. It does de-tune your strings easily (especially when bending), but thats what a tuner's for! Love this guitar!
I love the feel of the neck; very sleek, very fast. The pickups aren't the best but I've been able to get a good tone from them using the combination of my marshall amp & overdrive/wah pedals.
The wood (like any low priced guitar) does feel cheaply made, but that doesnt really bother me. Like I said before, the neck is great for faster playing. When I ordered mine, it got delivered to my house with a fret mark missing (BRAND NEW GUITAR) what??
Great guitar for the value. This price? I mean, come on. Anyone can start playing if they decide to buy this guitar.

Lots of problems

By metalfan-cSw4B

from ON. Canada

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

This guitar just feels cheaply made. From the wood that was used for the body,to the crap tuners that constantly slip out of tune.Right out of the box there were noticeable flaws, like the output jack was loose because of poorly mounted screws and the neck pickup did'nt work, probably because of the bad wiring that was mentioned in most of the reviews, but these problems might be just with my guitar. The Ml XM is not all bad though. The Neck seems well made with a really nice feel to it that you would expect from a company like Dean, also you gotta love the body style. My biggest problem was the paulownia body was not very well constructed and has a very hollow sound to it.While this may be a budget guitar and you get what you pay for there are a lot of better quality guitars in this price range. My advice for someone looking for a low cost guitar is to shop around or spend the money for one of the more quality dean guitars.

Look at the price

By Ol'Sarge

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

I've had it about a month, something to re-learn electric on (playing bass and acoustic for years). Seems like excellent quality for the price. Sure it has some quirks (hum from the output jack, doesn't like to hold a drop tuning), but the tone is great from the bridge pickup, the neck is fast and comfortable, it holds standard tuning very well. The headstock shape seems to make the strings want to jump out of the nut, but so far it hasn't been a major issue. If you're just starting on the guitar and want something with looks AND tone to keep you motivated, I'd say this should be on your short list. It does have faults, but remember: You're paying $170 for a mean-looking, decent sounding guitar.

only for parts

By Tennesseeripper

from in a van down by the river

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

This is my second or third review of this guitar, and when I did my earlier ones, I had no idea what I was doing. This is my first guitar, but I would not recommend it. The tuners are absolutely terrible. They slip after every bend you do. The pickups are decent, but they're not my cup of tea. The wood for the body is cheap. I have several dents all around my guitar, and I have no idea how they got there. The neck slot is cracked, the finish is bad, the neck itself is good though. I would use it for parts maybe, but other than that nothing. The soldering job inside the guitar is terrible. You can tell that they don't fine craft this particular instrument for quality. They sell it because it looks cool, and nothing more. It would make a good start guitar with some adjustments, but that's all it will ever be: a beginner's piece of junk. But it's my first guitar, so I feel obligated to keep it. haha

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

ive had this guitar for almost a year and i am begining to resent it. the neck is amazing, but thats about the only good thing. the soldering on it is horrible and it should be rewired right away. decent sound for such a lackling guitar ill say, but the excess noise is unbearable. dont waste your time unless you want this for a project

Good beginner's guitar

By Ben Grimes-5QclN

from Prescott Valley, AZ

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

The Dean ML-XM was my first electric guitar. I purchased mine in the summer of 2007. I still own mine, it's the transparent black model. This guitar has some good pro's; the weight of the guitar is very nice and light, the pickups and electronics stay in good shape, the neck has a good medium profile, the action was nice out of the box, the tuners stay in tune well for only being covered, and overall is just a comfortable guitar to play. But, I ran into a few problems as well; the intonation has always been off, even with adjustments, and the input jack and strap buttons keep coming loose. Personally, I don't like the tone of the instrument, but the notes are even and come out like they should. In all, this is a good beginner's guitar, good to learn on, but as you become a better player and start seeking tone, this isn't the instrument to use.

Ehh

By StitchRovito

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

ok i bought this guitar because i was looking for a cheap metal guitar to play around on as opposed to my strats and i have a dean bass that i love so i figured i would try it out. It was definatley not what i expected. There isnt much bottom end on the pickups which will definately need replace with Seymour Duncan Invaders and it doesnt do well with chorus or any other eddect for that matter. Also it doesnt stay in tune very well. however after i spen t four straight days fixing it up and messing with the neck (which was in wrong when it came in the mail) it stays in tune a little better. overall its not a terrible guitar, just not one that should be bought with the intention to sound like Dimebag Darrel right away. However its one of the BEST feeling guitars i've ever played and the natural finish is gorgeous. I'll be a dean man for life now

Shred For Less $$$

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Dean ML XM Electric Guitar:

I bought this very "ML" last month and have not put it down since, If your in to solid bottom end pounding rhythms, this is your guitar. The tone this axe sets out is simply volcanic. I do suggest a decent "metal" pedal for added fun, but even clean this guitar holds it's own...buy it now before Dean figures out this instrument is a power house, and jacks up the price.
