OVERVIEW

Dean speed, sustain and tone - for an amazing price.

The ML was created by Dean Zelinsky in 1977 to be the guitar with ultimate sustain and tone. Created with the Dean concept of spreading the mass of the body over a large area, the MLX electric guitar has something more. Dean believes radical string angles add to the resonance that helps a guitar become more alive. The distinctive headstock creates extra long string length, giving the ML a sound like no other guitar! Played by many of rock's elite over the past two decades, the ML has appeared in award winning videos, on stage and album covers, and more importantly, on some of rock's finest recordings.

With a light, basswood body, Grover tuners and a Tune-o-matic-style bridge, you can't go wrong with the Dean MLX!

I got a black one from a pawnshop and love the look, feel, and sustain of this guitar. I felt the pickups were wimpy and upgraded to a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge, making this my best-sounding electric by far. The ML-X has as much sustain as any guitar out there. It has truly amazing chording stability and intonation stability. If you play complicated chords high up on the neck, this is the guitar for you. You can put very heavy gauge strings on the ML-X and it stays happy. The Grover tuners keep it in tune very well, though the nut on mine needs graphite to lubricate it or the strings will snag when tuning. It is big and awkward, though lighter than you would think from the size, and the case is the size of a bass case! The downsides of the ML-X are: 1) the cable jack, which can easily be ripped out if your cable is yanked (the basswood is nice and light but does not grip the input jack mounting screws very well), and 2) the tiny strap buttons. Due to the ML-X body shape, and the angle the forward strap end comes off the guitar, even quality straps are very prone to slipping off. I got a set of those screw-in strap-lock thingys, but the screw gauge on those was miles away from the gauge on my ML-X strap button screws, and again the basswood body is not kind to screws, so I ended up using those plastic pick-shaped strap locks, which I guess work fine if you keep checking they are on nice and tight. On mine, the "ML-X" lettering on the truss-rod cover is way off-center, suggesting a hurried and sloppy manufacturing process. But no one is pretending this is a PRS or Gibson. Bottom line, this guitar is not for everyone, but if you want that wicked look and maximum sustain and note stability, the compromises are worth it. If you are not overly sure of what you want in an electric guitar, there are safer choices for your money.

Like the title implies-all looks and zero substance. This body style, in my opinion, is the single most aggressive, no nonsense, killer look ever designed. The head stock alone deserves one star.

However, the pitiful tuners, muddy pickups, fret buzz, hit and miss paint job, and over all poor craftsmanship make it a total waste of time and money. I set this guitar up, restrung it, and polished it and even had two EMGs ready to put into it, but just couldn't bring myself to do so because there were just too many things wrong with it.

Unless you want this to hang on your wall (which for maybe eighty less I would have kept it to do just that) don't waste your time. If you are new to electric guitar PLEASE do some research and buy an axe that will enhance your learning experience, not stifle it. It is extremely frustrating to try and learn on a substandard instrument you cannot rely on to stay in tune.

Before you buy this guitar, ask yourself "Do I want to spend my time learning or tuning\adjusting\compensating?"

1 star for the head stock and 1 for the body design. Other than that-forget about it.

Dean Zalinsky probably cringes knowing his name is on these.......

Comments about Dean MLX Electric Guitar:

Bought this guitar about two and a half years ago, was the greatest buy at the price. I am a major Dimebag Darrell fan so I always loved the ML look. Perfect to play between the legs sitting or on the lap sitting, allows you to choose your comfort zone. The neck is smooth, the pickups that come stock aren't the best. I had mine tore out and put in a dean dime humbucker in the neck and a Seymour Duncan sh-13 in the bridge. Went from a cheap practice guitar to the best thing to play. Started on a 1964 silvertone and this was a major upgrade. Metal style but with versatility. BUY NOW AND UPGRADE PICKUPS.

Comments about Dean MLX Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a great deal, the action out of the box was great, I barely had to adjust it, the neck is nice n straight, one of the best necks I've ever felt, only problem is the frets could use a little smoothing on the edges. The tuners work perfectly, absolutely no need to upgrade them. The nut however could use an upgrade (I'm replacing mine with a Graph Tech TUSQ XL). The intonation was only slightly off, took minor adjustments, there are no rattling sounds coming from the bridge it feels nice and solid. The pickups it comes with are definitely tolerable, but I recommend a swap for something you prefer, but the ones in it seem to be modeled after dimarzio super distortions, you can get some creamy blues tones out of 'em, and definitely some pretty rich harmonics neck or bridge position. The electronics (pots, jack, switch, etc.) all work extremely well, I may change the pots out just for the sake of doing so. Overall a great guitar, especially for the cash, HIGHLY recommended.

Comments about Dean MLX Electric Guitar:

I've had my MLX for a little over a year. It's been great. I only gave it a 3.5 on features because there's really nothing exceptional about it. The pickups aren't horrible, but aren't great. There's no tremolo, however the bridge it uses makes it very easy to palm mute. The tuners are nothing special. The biggest annoyance to me is that it goes noticeable out of tune just from bending the strings. I don't know if it's the strings I'm using, or how I play, or the tuners, but I constantly have to re-tune it. I would not use this guitar to play live.

Blues Guitar too? how about YES!!!

Comments about Dean MLX Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar for Christmas this year. I ask for it because it was used under condition 1, looked good, and I knew I could use Dual Humbuckers. When I opened it up I was very surprised to see it looked like a brand new guitar! The guitar has a little weight to it, not very much maybe 8 or 9lbs. the neck is lightly finished so you can feel the grain (not like a Gibson though, but its still a nice feel) If you have sweaty hands you will probably like the way it feels. The Grover tuners were a little loose and came out of tune slightly in between playing, but I tightened them up the way I like and its fine now, so don't let that scare you. strap locks are tight. The pickups have a very nice clean sound. both the neck and bridge together have a very bright and sparkle tone thats great for jazz and blues. If you like U2 you might find this guitar can give you some similar sounds. Individually the bridge pickup is bright yet balanced and the neck is warm and smooth. Now, the fun part. the dirty sounds are great, now I'm not much for metal (playing it, I love to hear it though) but this thing is crunchy and has some great bight for only $220 and the harmonics ring and scream too, its super stellar. overall I think this guitar is a great buy, you really will get your moneys worth out of it and I believe it will last you for many years of great guitar playing.

I purchased this guitar in black and its wonderful. It stays in tune for weeks thanks to the Grover Tuners. the pickups are great but i would suggest putting EMGs in it. thats a personal preference. the action is way fast too. i had heavy guage strings on it and the second fret almost touched the string! Great guitar for its price. I have only 2 complaints though: 1) The output jack comes unscrewed REALLY easily. just be sure to screw it in tighter every once in a while. 2) 22 FRETS! its unbelievably aggravating when you want to play something with 24 frets but you only got 22! Bottom line.. If your looking for a decent guitar, BUY THIS NOW! its deliciously eye pleasing too :P

Comments about Dean MLX Electric Guitar:

I first must say, I'm shocked and appalled: that they don't charge more for these babies.I bought one of the used ones (tight budget at the moment) and, while it wasn't the specific one I selected, it's better. When it came in, it was wired with two volumes and one tone. But since I always leave them full out anyways, that's all right with me. Perfect.Practically bullet proof finish. The Grover tuners (first time I've ever had an axe with them) are spectacular. The pickups hold up better under distortion than previously said. Holds a tune for days if you don't bump the tuners or elselike. This is simply a spectacular guitar. It's supremely built, with a slim and fast neck, velvety raunchy sound, and flawless construction. The only thing I could reccommend is that you get strap-locks (I use metal washers...1 dollar instead of 20, though it is harder to change straps) because the stock strap buttons are a little small.
