Overall I would say this is an excellent guitar for guys who like to hot rod their axes, it plays exceptionally well for the price it has a great neck and sweet Grover tuners on that awesome Dean V headstock, once hot rodded it will easily hang with the big boys! Great guitar for entry level provided that the purchaser can or knows someone who can perform some basic luthier work. I am basing this on the two Dean guitars that I own and also on other reviews here listing problems with wiring and electronics, once I loaded mine with new pots, switch and pickups (all for around $150) it plays like a $700 or $800 dollar axe and a has a killer vintage look, I highly reccomend this axe for the price!
Having some credit @ a local music store I picked up a Dean VX Brazilian Burst for my son for $200. After about six months of collecting dust and him showing no interest it became mine. I liked the guitar because it played well (like a much more expensive instrument) and had a great vintage look with the cream and black zebra humbuckers and chrome hardware. It had a very fasy and playable neck and the Grover tuners speak for themselves.
Physically the neck, body and hardware are above average for and entry level priced instrument, playability exceeded my expectations. The electronics however are a different story, start with the pickups they look great, but their sound is what is to be expected from stock pickups on a guitar of this price range, The switch was bad from the factory, playing one pickup or the other, but not both from the center position, I checked the wiring, no bad solder joints just a defective switch, ironically I had this exact problem with my Dean Dime DB Razorback. I put in DiMarzio 500K custom taper pots, and a new mechanical toggle switch, and loaded it with a pair of Wilde Bill's L500 Twin Blade pickups, For a finishing touch I put some black speed knobs that "Go To Eleven" Now this axe plays and sounds as good as my more expensive guitars and I was even able to order the L500's in black and cream zebra coils to retain the killer vintage look!
Despite the electronics issues I feel this guitar is an excellent value for the money, especially for someone who doesn't have the cash to pay for USA Custom Shop guitars and likes to hot rod their axes. Typically I purchase midrange guitars $400-$600 and then upgrade the pots and pickups so this was perfect. It plays as well as my Jackson King V and my B.C.Rich Kerry King Beast V, even if it didn't sound as good out of the box.

I shouldn't have bought this guitar. Sure, it looks nice but is horrible to play. The action goes bad fast, so you have to adjust the Truss Rod, Which if yours is like mine, won't work. I had to lower the bridge, and now there's fret buzz (and the 22 frets are noiseless). The Pickups are horrible. They give out a muddy distortion, with tons of static sound. The Clean isn't that good either. The only good Things are the grover tuners. I only recomend this guitar to a player who isn't serious about playing. If you want a similar guitar in this price range buy an epiphone flying V. They have a much higher quality throughout. This guitar lasted me for about 4 months before a manditory upgrade (Gibson Sg with P-90 Pickups which i highly recommend). Don't Buy this guitar.

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

Ive had my "Dean VX" for over 2 years now and I just wanted to let all my fellow players know that it has held up VERY well,I bought a "Dean VX" Because I needed an Axe to grab when I was headed out to a buddy's house for a jam session, road tripping or basically any situation where I did not want to use My Mid to Higher end Guitars,In other words a pure "Beater Axe",But the "VX" really stole my heart and pretty much blew me away for being such an Inexpensive, more or less "Entry level axe" it plays very well, sounds gr8,and quite honestly is a much better guitar then a lot of axes costing 2-3 times as much,I know there are a lot of players who might be a bit Leary of buying such an Inexpensive Axe, thinking it probably is a piece of garbage that sounds Crappy, wont stay in tune, and plays like a telephone pole, but this is simply NOT the case, the "Dean VX" is a really Decent all around guitar for the Money.

Great find at a solid price

By Ben Plesser

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

This was my first guitar that I ever bet. Sol, as I named him, has served me well for a while. There was a period when I put him down for a prolonged time because of a faulty input which coincidentally coincided with the purchase of a different guitar. Honestly though, I think that with the revamped electronics I prefer this baby to my $700 Epiphone. Great value, great instrument. Love this baby and intend to rock it out for many more years to come.
The key feature here is definately the maple neck. Its cut perfectly and is so smooth that your hands almost glide as you play this baby.
Everything on this guitar is top notch except the electronics. I had some trouble with the input and the pickups were what you would expect on a standard store bought guitar (iffy at best). We replaced the electronics with an EMG active pickup and since then this baby has been killer.
The value here is top notch. With a little work this can be a great instrument for any guitarist of any level.

Nice guitar for anyone

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

I got this same guitar in a shop near where I live. I got it cause I was tight on money and wanted a nice guitar. This one caught my eye and so I took my chances. I love this guitar, it's a good weight, got a comfortable neck and good tone. Only issue I had was the jack input got shorted out but that was easily replaceable. Also one day I dropped it when my strap came loose and to my surprise it was just fine. Nothing broke, nothing chipped, it just got a little out of tune.If you want a good guitar for a good price, I'd suggest get this one, of course not the best but get it and make your own changes and it can be your favorite!

Hm...

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

Uncomfortable to use if you don't know how to hold a flying vee.The pickups are weak, but deliver a plethora of different tones. The guitar itsself comes with three knobs that can be used to cycle through around 20 individual sounds.Through a great amp, this thing is awesome. The tuning holds almost 100% of the time, even with massive bending. A great metal and grunge guitar.

Fly

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

Ever since I began to play guitar over 17 years ago I have wanted a flying v. Well about two years ago I got this one and it has rocked ever since. I play in a band and we play everything from rockabilly to heavy metal to old time country and my Dean V has been great on every one. I have had no technical and no finish issues at all. Quality for this price is second to none and the look is as fierce as you can get without buying any of the Dime guitars. The only thing I would have added is a floyd but hey that just gives me a reason to get another Dean guitar.

Awesome V

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

My parents bought this guitar for me for Christmas this year. It wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it was exactly what I needed. The minute I plugged it in (I used a Vox AD30VT, now upgraded to an AD50VT), my guitar playing entered a whole new level. This guitar absolutely ROCKS. The zebra humbuckers are nice, heavy enough for a nice crunch, but not too heavy. I can play anything I want on this guitar. The only thing I didn't like were the stock strings, which I changed to Ernie Ball hybrid slinkys. And its a V, so you know it'll make you want to shred. Mine is the braziliaburst finish, which is gorgeous. And the grover tuners not only match the guitar but also do their job very well. Overall, this guitar is an absolute steal, and rocks as hard as any I've played.

Comments about Dean VX Electric Guitar:

I've had mine for ten years now, ordered from Musiciansfriend. In that time, I've added a GFS Power Rail in the bridge, a new 500k pot to the neck, and gone through several sets of strings. I've dragged this thing through mud, thrown rocks at it, pulled frets 15+ off, thrown it across the stage... I have TRIED to kill this guitar, and it refuses to die! My Jacksons are still going strong, but it is more resilient than my BC Rich and outlasted my strat by a long shot.

Needless to say, When I test a guitar, I put it through the gauntlet. Aside from durability (which I'd say it passes), it has a great feel and small neck - very comfortable to wrap your hands around. The action requires a bit of work, especially at the first string change, but is no more problematic than any bargain axe. The tuners are solid once you lube or carve out the nut and it retains tuning fairly well. This guitar does require a delicate touch to properly tune though; the neck bends easily (I prefer that though - I play with my feedback).

My biggest problem was that the pickups suck. For some reason, this guitar is insanely loud compared to my Les Paul and tele, and retains this characteristic even after changing pickups. With a fresh 500k volume pot on the neck, I was comfortable with only changing the bridge pickup. Stock setup is about as muddy as it gets. The electronics are failure prone over time, so be prepared to resolder a connection or replace a component every now and then. I've only had the volume pots fail, personally, and I still use the busted bridge pot with success. The frets are comfy too, but personally I prefer smaller (vintage Fender). This is a hot rodders guitar, through and through.

This is a metal guitar - it doesn't do what teles or hollowbodies do and is fairly limited sonically, but it is great for metal. Through an Engl it is fantastic for black/death metal, and through old school Randalls it is a sludge machine. For the money, I'm impressed. I want another!
