OVERVIEW

Sitka spruce top and luxurious appointments in an Epiphone guitar offered at a steal.

From Epiphone comes this beautiful entry-level guitar, priced for anyone to afford. Dressed in a beautiful finish, and featuring appointments you'd often find on higher-end guitars, the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar sounds just as good as it looks. Built on advanced jumbo body design, the depth of the body and the width of the shoulders create a large sound chamber, presenting tone that is full, deep, and loud.

The mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top brings out rich harmonics, lots of projection, and clarity in tone. A glued-in dovetail neck joint keeps the Epiphone acoustic guitar's neck and body stable, without losing any subtleties in tone. The mahogany neck adds strength, as the wood is quite durable and will stand up to the elements. The rosewood bridge and fretboard produces lasting sustain, in a deep appearance.

Dressed in a polyurethane finish and featuring such desirable appointments as sealed die-cast tuners and nickel hardware, you will love the look of the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar as much as its sound. Built under the expertise of Epiphone's master craftsmen, this acoustic guitar will sound excellent for a very long time. And at this price, you can't go wrong.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

The guitar has a good sound because of it's large body. But you just never know what you're going to get with an inexpensive import! I purchased one for myself and had to send it back for dead fretting. The second one I got was better so I kept it. Then I got one a for a friend (he asked for it) and the neck was so out of wack it took me 3 day of slow adjusting to get it fairly accurate.
These play nice and sound pretty good (with a little work sometimes) especially for the price. They are what they are. Good practice guitars and even decent for a small gig.

This is the second Epiphone AJ-220s I've purchased from Musician's Friend. I kept the first one even though it had a rattle you could hear near the headstock. It was the truss rod, and it was engaged. I foolishly kept that one instead of returning it. I sold it at a loss.

The 2nd AJ-220s I just purchased was horrible. Fret buzz all up and down the neck. I checked the truss rod and it wasn't even engaged. And the solid wood top was of the lowest quality. Needless to say this one's going back to MF.

Hopefully the third one will be the charm. Epiphone does make good guitars, especially for the money. But I'd be very hesitant to recommend this model. I'm glad Musician's Friend has a good return policy. You just might need it.

AJ-220S - Worth it...

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

Some string buzz, raised the action by loosening the truss rod now plays great with no buzz. Put some Elixar Lights on it also, sounds great. Not much sustain, but that's comparing it to my Martin D-18, apples and oranges.... The finish looks awesome and I am a huge fan of the satin neck, very slick and fast playing, not sticky at all like some high gloss finished guitar necks. I'm very pleased with the purchase and would buy another one without a doubt. Try it, you can always send it back but I doubt you'll need to.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

All I did was change the strings using Martin SP Lifespan 10's and this thing sounds AWESOME! Stays in tune, great action! I own older Taylors and this Epi hangs right in there. For the money i's a no brainer. Great guitar!

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar 3 days ago and I'm amazed at the quality vs the price. The fit and finish are excellent. The body has beautiful binding and the sunburst finish is flawless. The neck is satin and super slick, and the fret edges are very smooth. Even the bridge pins fit perfectly. The action is low out of the box and needs no further adjustment. And I can't get over the tone quality. Very punchy with deep rich bass and lots of volume and sustain. I'm very pleased with this guitar and would recommend it to beginners as well as advanced players. Epiphone had a winner here.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

This is the one of the beat guitars you will ever get at this price range. It's got great action, superb sound, stays in tune, and looks killer. This guitar sounds better than most guitars I have played with that cost double or triple. It is extremely fun to play, and has actually made me a better musician. It looks to be very well constructed, and I have found no cons with this instrument as of yet. And for the price, I won't feel guilty beating it up. I am very happy with this purchase, and definitely recommend this axe.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I went out to my local guitar shop, as I usually do at least once a week. I rarely buy anything, I just jam out on their guitars and see if there is anything I might want in the future. I picked this one up and knew right away that it was a great guitar. I bought it on the spot. Everything about this guitar is perfect. The tone is fantastic, it has a great overall sound, and is built extremely well. I have six guitars, this one being my best, and four of my other ones cost more than this. This guitar is a great deal, snatch it up when you get the chance, you won't regret it!

I saw the infomercial video Epiphone sent through my email and I just had to try it, cause I couldn't believe it had fooled all those musicians. Beautiful, great sounding, and dirt cheap the perfect combination for me. This is my everyday guitar to help save some wear on my higher end vintage guitars.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I own MANY guitars and for what I paid for 2 of these, one natural and one vintage burst, I'm still in shock. They play and sound wonderful.
Not quite 50 year old Martins (and most can't tell the difference) and equal to or better in sound than any Gibson, or Taylor at 10 times the price. But also no where near the cost or worry about using them on a job.
The bass response is huge and the high end rings out beautifully and it's incredibly easy to play.(action)
I've gotten nothing but compliments from every one. As with any guitar only the test of time will tell how the construction will hold out. I've had one for nearly 2 years and it is fine. But as far as being cost effective, how can you go wrong.
Being a Gibson and Martin player for over 50 years, I swore never to buy an import, but after trying one of these out I was won over, and saved a lot of money.
          Made my wife happy too!

Out of all the instruments I have owned, this is by far the best! The easiest to play, the fullest sound, and not to mention the best value, especially for a very reasonable price. When I pick it up just to mess around I can't put it down. This is hands down the best purchase I have made over the years. I wish I would have discovered it sooner.

Great value for the price. Nice low action - mine had NO BUZZES all up and down the fretboard. Good little "cabin guitar" - for when you just gotta have one around. Had mine sent to my folks house 1,100 miles away so I wouldn't have to travel with a guitar on airplanes. Delightful instrument, lived up to and exceeded my expectations - its not a Gibson, and I wish it was short scale, but this was a fun little purchase. Thanks MF, ya done good ! (I'm gonna get another one and send it to my In-Laws house.)

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

But when you hit, wow. Great value, if you can get a good one. Although called 'Advanced Jumbo' it is really a round-shouldered dreadnought. Made in Indonesia. Cons: They tend to come set up too low, causing some fret buzz. I've seen two that required a new saddle, as there would have been too much relief in the neck after a truss rod adjustment. But Gibson will send you a saddle for free, if it's necessary. I have also seen some minor cosmetic defects.Pros:Most have tone ranging from good to great. Most that I've seen have very well finished frets. I'm actually keeping the only one that I've seen with rough edges, because of it's fantastic tone. Summary:If you want an inexpensive solid top guitar, for either a starter or a beater, this is perfect. After all, if it's not quite right, and it's something you can't fix yourself, Musicians Friend will make good on it. What have you got to lose?

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

Your not going to find a better low-end guitar with a solid spruce top! The sound is bright without being tinny. Open chords sound like there coming from a much more expensive guitar. It also looks very clean and the natural finish has a classy look, especially at this price point. My only negative is the Epiphone logo on the pick guard. I took mine off. A minor thing but it detracted from the looks.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I ordered this for a young man in my church who had played my J-45 (the very expensive USA version of this guitar). I order inexpensive guitars often for students and beginners, and I expect to do some set-up work on them. But this one was ready right out of the box. A sticker on the back of the neck says "100% set-up and inspected in the USA by 15." Well, 15, whoever you are, you did good! The sound was excellent, too (solid top makes a huge difference). So much so that I compared it head-to-head with my J-45. It was so close that I re-strung both with the same new strings and compared them again. Again, very, very close. Maybe just as good as the J-45. So, I rate this as one of the great values in starter guitars. Parents and beginners: you can get a pretty good guitar for half of what this one costs. If you can pay a little more -- this is a GREAT choice.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I really love this guitar. Sounds great. Stays in tune pretty well but I'm always needing to bring it back after a song, if only a little bit.

Here's my big issue... I bought this guitar from Musician's Friend. My purchase experience was great, however, when the guitar arrived the high E string buzzed when played open. I lifted the action via truss rod and got it to play major chords pretty well, but anything above fret 5 on the high E would buzz to the point that you can't tell what the note is. Totally unplayable when moving up.

I called MF and the tech told me to read around online on how to fix it. He even suggested I file the frets down. NOW WAY! I'm not a guitar repair guy and I'm not going to attempt something like that. Anyway, he offered an exchange but I'd have to pay shipping back.

Here's the jist of this review... if you order online you're likely getting a guitar that hasn't been opened since leaving the factory. I doubt MF checks playability before leaving the warehouse. I could exchange it, but there's no guarantee that the next one will be better. It really just needs to be setup properly by a tech. So, I either pay for shipping back to MF and wait for a new one to arrive OR I use the money I would've spent for shipping on taking it to a competitor to be setup properly.

I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but you need to consider these possibilities when ordering online. Going local may be best if buying a new guitar.

Excellent depth and range of sound after changing to lighter strings and a minor trussrod adjustment. Plays easy and sounds great, especially for the price. Volume sounds like it is amplified.

I bought a blemmed AJ-220S, figuring it couldn't be all that bad. Well, the blem was inconsequential. When I patched it up, and re-strung it (nearly always helps a new guitar), I had this sweet, smooth player. Crisp yet warm tones, and oh so clean neck. One of my better 'cheapos'. Love it!

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

Don't get me wrong, it's a good beginner acoustic. But there's the key word: beginner. This was my first guitar and due to its limited use (I'm more of a bassist) it suited me. In these guitars it's sort of a hit-or-miss. It is possible for you to get a very good quality instrument from this deal. However, it is also possible to get one from the other end of the spectrum. Mine fell in the middle. There is buzz if you play on the higher frets and on the high E string the every fret above the twelfth sounds like the twelfth. The only way to tell the quality is if you have a chance to play the instrument you'll buy in the store. If not, I wouldn't get this unless you're a beginner

After my buddy set the guitar up it sounded great.
Bridge had to be shimmed and neck adjusted.
I have been ripped off a few times because I am
a beginner but this guitar is fun to play and in my
opinion well worth the money. My experienced
buddies have offered to buy it from me which speaks
                        volumes.
