OVERVIEW

Sitka spruce top and luxurious appointments in an Epiphone guitar offered at a steal.

From Epiphone comes this beautiful entry-level guitar, priced for anyone to afford. Dressed in a beautiful finish, and featuring appointments you'd often find on higher-end guitars, the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar sounds just as good as it looks. Built on advanced jumbo body design, the depth of the body and the width of the shoulders create a large sound chamber, presenting tone that is full, deep, and loud.

The mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top brings out rich harmonics, lots of projection, and clarity in tone. A glued-in dovetail neck joint keeps the Epiphone acoustic guitar's neck and body stable, without losing any subtleties in tone. The mahogany neck adds strength, as the wood is quite durable and will stand up to the elements. The rosewood bridge and fretboard produces lasting sustain, in a deep appearance.

Dressed in a polyurethane finish and featuring such desirable appointments as sealed die-cast tuners and nickel hardware, you will love the look of the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar as much as its sound. Built under the expertise of Epiphone's master craftsmen, this acoustic guitar will sound excellent for a very long time. And at this price, you can't go wrong.

I am overwhelmed with my recent purchase of this guitar from Musicians Friend. I gambled on a Level 4 needs repair. From the photos I could not see any scratches or blemishes in this guitar.
It arrived promptly today as all my orders from Musicians friend do. I opened the package and there was what seemed to be a perfect guitar. All the stickers were intact as well as the protective film on the pick guard. I got out a light and closely inspected it. The only blemish was a small dot on the pick guard the size of a pin head. The neck was straight and the action was low with no buzz anywhere on the fretboard. The final test was how it played. It plays like butter. smoothest guitar ever.
I own several guitars including an Epiphone DR100. I now know why a higher grade Epiphone is so much better.
This is now my favorite guitar. I'ts the one I always go to when I am ready to play. I play a lot and keep my guitars close by so I can grab one when the mood hits me.
Thank you Musicians Friend. You never let me down. This gamble was more than worthwhile. Fantastic price for a fantastic guitar.
I would urge others to gamble on the Used Condition 4 guitars. I was a winner on this one.

This is the second Epiphone AJ-220s I've purchased from Musician's Friend. I kept the first one even though it had a rattle you could hear near the headstock. It was the truss rod, and it was engaged. I foolishly kept that one instead of returning it. I sold it at a loss.

The 2nd AJ-220s I just purchased was horrible. Fret buzz all up and down the neck. I checked the truss rod and it wasn't even engaged. And the solid wood top was of the lowest quality. Needless to say this one's going back to MF.

Hopefully the third one will be the charm. Epiphone does make good guitars, especially for the money. But I'd be very hesitant to recommend this model. I'm glad Musician's Friend has a good return policy. You just might need it.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

The guitar has a good sound because of it's large body. But you just never know what you're going to get with an inexpensive import! I purchased one for myself and had to send it back for dead fretting. The second one I got was better so I kept it. Then I got one a for a friend (he asked for it) and the neck was so out of wack it took me 3 day of slow adjusting to get it fairly accurate.
These play nice and sound pretty good (with a little work sometimes) especially for the price. They are what they are. Good practice guitars and even decent for a small gig.

This is a great guitar for the money. I changed the strings as soon as it arrived and filed the saddle down. I reset the truss rod and the guitar opened up. This guitar is very well made. I'll keep it.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

Epiphone AJ220S is one nice dreadnought in every way. I played a vintage sunburst in a music store and of all the guitars under 200 I liked it the best. It has pretty looks, slim neck-profile which I like, good balance to the whole guitar and most importantly it has a good sound. However, like most other guitars in this price it doesn't produces the bass notes as strongly as I would like. I personally like a guitar that produces well-defined and strong bass notes. So, I decided to go with the Takamine GD20 which is not as pretty and 50 dlrs more expensive, but, it produces the bass notes really well and it also has a slim neck-profile with a satin finish body and neck which I like. It also has a solid Cedar top which I like better for finger style playing which I'm a big fan of instead of the solid sitka spruce on AJ220S. If you have only 200 or want to only spend 200, then, you can't go wrong with the Epiphone AJ220S.

I just bought this guitar in Vintage Sunburst & I was blown away by it's appearance, sound & playability. Had I'd been able to get something like this 40 years ago, I'd a been in "hog-heaven." This is great for both beginners & pros as well. My no. 1 guitar is the Epiphone EJ200AE, but this is my second, no doubt.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I bought a blemmed AJ-220S, figuring it couldn't be all that bad. Well, the blem was inconsequential. When I patched it up, and re-strung it (nearly always helps a new guitar), I had this sweet, smooth player. Crisp yet warm tones, and oh so clean neck. One of my better 'cheapos'. Love it!

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I ordered this for a young man in my church who had played my J-45 (the very expensive USA version of this guitar). I order inexpensive guitars often for students and beginners, and I expect to do some set-up work on them. But this one was ready right out of the box. A sticker on the back of the neck says "100% set-up and inspected in the USA by 15." Well, 15, whoever you are, you did good! The sound was excellent, too (solid top makes a huge difference). So much so that I compared it head-to-head with my J-45. It was so close that I re-strung both with the same new strings and compared them again. Again, very, very close. Maybe just as good as the J-45. So, I rate this as one of the great values in starter guitars. Parents and beginners: you can get a pretty good guitar for half of what this one costs. If you can pay a little more -- this is a GREAT choice.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I really love this guitar. Sounds great. Stays in tune pretty well but I'm always needing to bring it back after a song, if only a little bit.

Here's my big issue... I bought this guitar from Musician's Friend. My purchase experience was great, however, when the guitar arrived the high E string buzzed when played open. I lifted the action via truss rod and got it to play major chords pretty well, but anything above fret 5 on the high E would buzz to the point that you can't tell what the note is. Totally unplayable when moving up.

I called MF and the tech told me to read around online on how to fix it. He even suggested I file the frets down. NOW WAY! I'm not a guitar repair guy and I'm not going to attempt something like that. Anyway, he offered an exchange but I'd have to pay shipping back.

Here's the jist of this review... if you order online you're likely getting a guitar that hasn't been opened since leaving the factory. I doubt MF checks playability before leaving the warehouse. I could exchange it, but there's no guarantee that the next one will be better. It really just needs to be setup properly by a tech. So, I either pay for shipping back to MF and wait for a new one to arrive OR I use the money I would've spent for shipping on taking it to a competitor to be setup properly.

I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but you need to consider these possibilities when ordering online. Going local may be best if buying a new guitar.
