Epiphone

Solid sitka spruce top and luxurious appointments in an acoustic-electric cutaway, offered at a steal.

From Epiphone comes the beautiful entry-level acoustic-electric guitar, priced for anyone to afford. Dressed in a beautiful finish, and featuring appointments you'd often find on higher-end instruments, the Epiphone AJ-220SCE guitar sounds just as good as it looks. Built on advanced jumbo body design, the depth of the body and the width of the shoulders create a large sound chamber, presenting tone that's full, deep, and loud. The cutaway guitar body design provides comfort when accessing the upper-register frets on the rosewood fretboard.

The Epiphone AJ-220SCE guitar's mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top brings out rich harmonics, lots of projection, and clarity in tone. A glued neck joint keeps the guitar's neck and body stable, without losing any subtleties in tone. The mahogany neck adds strength, as the wood is quite durable and will stand up to the elements. The acoustic-electric guitar's rosewood bridge and fretboard produces lasting sustain, in a deep appearance.

The SlimTaper D-shape neck and 12" radius add speed and comfort to your playing, while lessening player exhaustion. The Epiphone guitar's ebony fretboard, rosewood bridge, and bone nut produce some of the clearest tone possible, so you can hear your notes with crystal clarity.

At the heart of this Epiphone acoustic-electric guitar is the integrated electronics, letting you plug in and amplify quickly and painlessly. The Nanoflex pickup is capable of conveying all the harmonic and organic dimensions of the acoustic sound spectrum. Nanoflex pickups produce an open sound, conveying natural harmonic overtones. Shadow developed a unique technology that amplifies and shields directly at the pickup. This innovative technology keeps loss of sound at an absolute minimum and guarantees a signal that is completely free of noise. The Epiphone AJ-220SCE guitar's preamp includes master volume, high EQ, low EQ, phase reversal, chromatic tuner, and dynamics controls to dial in your ideal amplified guitar voice.

Dressed in a polyurethane finish and featuring such desirable appointments as sealed die-cast tuners and nickel hardware, you will love the look of this Epiphone guitar as much as its sound. Built under the expertise of Epiphone's master craftsmen, the AJ-220SCE acoustic-electric guitar will sound excellent for a very long time. And at this price, you can't go wrong.

It needs very minor adjustment (humidify it a day or so with a damp sponge in the case) such as smooth the fret ends with the right type file (cheap to buy from StewMac), deepen the nut slots carefully (most folks should have a luthier do this), oil the fretboard and bridge wood, clean off the frets and change strings last. I took out some neck relief and tune mine to 1/2 step low and then let 1/8 turn out if needed to get just enough neck relief to stop rattles.

Good sound, not stellar. But it's not second rate tone and for the price acoustically it is remarkable. Add a good pickup/tuner package from the factory and good tuners, it's a value that is hard to top.
Rated 9 because it has Shadow Nanoflex with tuner and good tuning machines similar to Grovers. The saddle looks and feels like bleached bone, but not certain.

So it has all the basic features we look for in an A/E cutaway dread.
At this price point, it's well built, over-finished in poly which is understandable. The detailing is neat and pretty good wood grains in the mahogany back/sides and spruce top (which is solid).

Setup at fret 12 was almost ideal (3/32" bass side and 2/32" treble side gap). Nuts slots need to be deepened, but leave it to a luthier unless you know what you are doing.

The action over all was good enough to play but can be improved with minimal work as long as it's done right.
This I rate a 10 because it's a good priced guitar with pretty good electronics, good acoustic sound, good factory setup, and good appearance and build quality. It's nearly the quality of a Guild GAD series D25, but those are more money with a nice case and no pickup.

So for performance on stage that calls for a guitar with a built in pickup/tuner, the Epi wins. Value is high and I keep tabs on the better guitar values. I have played Taylors with Expression that I would skip and take the Epi for acoustic tone at a great savings! Sometimes, 'good enough' is all that is needed.

The guitar was in bad need of a neck adjustment and could only be partially played. It had a severe buzzing, the strings were flat on the frets, it couldn't be played, and had to be taken 35 miles to be adjusted. The gas used was costly and having the neck adjusted cost more. The guitar will soon be in great shape, but the merchandise needs to be checked out before shipping. I paid a lot of money for the guitar and I expected it to be playable when I received it.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had an EJ-200 that I liked, but it had a maple neck with some issues. The jumbo shape fit me well and the sound was pretty good, but I'd had to add a Seymour Duncan clipon pickup which was only so-so. I bought this one to get a mahoganey neck, onboard electronics, and a better amplified sound.

I paid Musicians Friend for next day shipping and insurance, and that was a really good choice. When the guitar arrived, it had some damage on the back, so I called Musicians Friend. They emailed me a shipping label, and the next day, I took it to UPS and sent it back. Here's the best part--MY REPLACEMENT ARRIVED THAT SAME DAY!!!

I was not only blowan away by the service, but also by the guitar. It sound great, it's set up perfectly, it has a built in tuner (what a concept, Marting and Taylor), and I've not had any fret buzz or string noise at all.

I actually like my replacement AJ220 (made in Indonesia) better than my original, damaged guitar (made in China) due to better tone and a lighter shade of mahoganey on the neck. My first guitar (50 years ago) was a Gibson, and I presently own a Martin 12 string (for the past 28 years), but I enjoy playing my cheap Epiphone AJ220 more than I do my Martin. The sound is honest, the neck is true, the finish is beautiful and the price is exceptional.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar as a back-up for my much more expensive Collings Guitar. I wanted a guitar that I didn't have to worry about playing at church and could be banged around without fear. I was very impressed with the playability. There was a little bit of buzzing with heavy strumming, but nothing significant and with an acceptable range for such an inexpensive guitar. I would expect to make some adjustments. I have even had to make adjustments to much more expensive instruments. I am entirely satisfied.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Excellent guitar for anyone looking for something better than the cheap stuff, but not ready to invest on the 1K plus stuff. This guitar plays and sounds as good as more expensive acoustic guitars I have played. And, it looks nice too.

I picked this up a couple of years ago to have a travel guitar that wouldn't cause me pain if it was damaged or stolen. The metal "E" on the pick guard fell off after a few days, but other than that, no material defects. I like it without the "E" since it makes it look more like a Gibson from a distance. I've used it for both live performances and recording. It is a solid guitar with a great sound. I've owned other similarly-priced guitars and this one is by far the best sounding/playing guitar I've found in this price range.

Mine was fairly playable right out of the box. I adjusted the neck a little to improve the action. I like the onboard tuner as part of the electronics, but the pickup system isn't anything to write home about. Sounds much better using a microphone to amplify or record verses the onboard system.

This is my second aj220, bought as a gift for my grand-daughter. The natural finish is nice, but I was surprised to see several blemishes and scratches near the battery door. I received it about a month before her birthday so I could return it if I wasn't satisfied. After playing it a few days, I decided I could live with it even though the fret ends were not dressed properly, I will need to have some work done to it. The action was okay, new strings made it sound better. These are good axes for the dough, and certainly are good enough to play out when you don't want to risk taking expensive guitars to bar gigs. I've used one of these for about 2 years on jobs where the Gibsons shouldn't go. Overall a good sounding and good looking guitar for the money...my expensive accoustics are not 6 times better...but are 6 times the money. Add a small budget for the luthier, and you'll have a fine player. If mine gets broke, I'll buy another aj220 to replace it. jm

Nice Guitar for under $300. I'm a drummer with a home studio. I had a budget for an acoustic electric guitar. I did a bunch of research in the $200-$300 range. This one seemed to be the one. While the body is a bit light, the guitar overall is a nice sounding piece. Everyone who plays it, enjoys it. The guitar has a nice full sound. It's great for recording acoustically using mics. The electronics sound really good too. Again, a full range of sound.

I haven't been able to put it down. The only thing that I don't like about it is that there is some fret buzzing that I'll have to get around to fixing soon. Other than that, it sounds great, the vintage sunburst is beautiful, the tuner is pretty accurate and it's comfortable to hold!

I bought this as a used item to have a backup acoustic-electric for gigs etc...The overall quality of this guitar is amazing!!! It sounds pretty good unplugged just change the strings (I use Martin phosphor SP) I plugged it in to my roland-ac 60 and it sounds very "tinny" at first but make a few adjustments to the onboard electronics and you can get a pretty good sound out of it. I am not ever too concerned with the finish of a guitar but this one looks really great (I bought mine in natural). I have this guitar hanging on the wall by my bed and grab it anytime inspiration hits me. It is a keeper for shure!!!
