Nice Guitar for under $300. I'm a drummer with a home studio. I had a budget for an acoustic electric guitar. I did a bunch of research in the $200-$300 range. This one seemed to be the one. While the body is a bit light, the guitar overall is a nice sounding piece. Everyone who plays it, enjoys it. The guitar has a nice full sound. It's great for recording acoustically using mics. The electronics sound really good too. Again, a full range of sound.
Pros
- Feels good
- Looks good
- Sounds good
Cons
- May Need Some Adjustment
Best Uses
- At home

I haven't been able to put it down. The only thing that I don't like about it is that there is some fret buzzing that I'll have to get around to fixing soon. Other than that, it sounds great, the vintage sunburst is beautiful, the tuner is pretty accurate and it's comfortable to hold!

I bought this as a used item to have a backup acoustic-electric for gigs etc...The overall quality of this guitar is amazing!!! It sounds pretty good unplugged just change the strings (I use Martin phosphor SP) I plugged it in to my roland-ac 60 and it sounds very "tinny" at first but make a few adjustments to the onboard electronics and you can get a pretty good sound out of it. I am not ever too concerned with the finish of a guitar but this one looks really great (I bought mine in natural). I have this guitar hanging on the wall by my bed and grab it anytime inspiration hits me. It is a keeper for shure!!!

You cannot find a better guitar for the price. It arrived in perfect, playable condition.
The sound is amazing. I am very, very satisfied with this AJ. I'd buy another one in a heart beat if I needed another acoustic guitar.
Comments about Epiphone AJ-220SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
It needs very minor adjustment (humidify it a day or so with a damp sponge in the case) such as smooth the fret ends with the right type file (cheap to buy from StewMac), deepen the nut slots carefully (most folks should have a luthier do this), oil the fretboard and bridge wood, clean off the frets and change strings last. I took out some neck relief and tune mine to 1/2 step low and then let 1/8 turn out if needed to get just enough neck relief to stop rattles.
Good sound, not stellar. But it's not second rate tone and for the price acoustically it is remarkable. Add a good pickup/tuner package from the factory and good tuners, it's a value that is hard to top.
Rated 9 because it has Shadow Nanoflex with tuner and good tuning machines similar to Grovers. The saddle looks and feels like bleached bone, but not certain.
So it has all the basic features we look for in an A/E cutaway dread.
At this price point, it's well built, over-finished in poly which is understandable. The detailing is neat and pretty good wood grains in the mahogany back/sides and spruce top (which is solid).
Setup at fret 12 was almost ideal (3/32" bass side and 2/32" treble side gap). Nuts slots need to be deepened, but leave it to a luthier unless you know what you are doing.
The action over all was good enough to play but can be improved with minimal work as long as it's done right.
This I rate a 10 because it's a good priced guitar with pretty good electronics, good acoustic sound, good factory setup, and good appearance and build quality. It's nearly the quality of a Guild GAD series D25, but those are more money with a nice case and no pickup.
So for performance on stage that calls for a guitar with a built in pickup/tuner, the Epi wins. Value is high and I keep tabs on the better guitar values. I have played Taylors with Expression that I would skip and take the Epi for acoustic tone at a great savings! Sometimes, 'good enough' is all that is needed.

If you are looking for great acoustic tone on a budget, this guitar will fullfill that need and then some. I own this guitar and have been very pleased with the playability and tone.

I have had this guitar for almost six months now, and can't find a single thing I don't just love about it. I even chose this because the sound and quality were, in my opinion, over all better.

Played one at Guitar Center and it was awesome, but I like my acoustics new and untouched so I ordered one new. When it arrived it was completely unplayable. The bridge was set too low, and the frets were unleveled and peeling up from the bevels. Got the exchange delivered a few days ago. there are good and bad things about this guitar. I'll start with the bad. First, it does not have Grover tuners as advertised. Which is strange because most new Epi's come with them. Not a big deal though, you can get a set of Grover 18:1 for about $40 online. Of course, the strings were crappy so had to change those. The guitar did not come set up well at all. I had to do a truss rod adjustment, and a little bit of filing in the nut. That being said, it is a great guitar now! Great tone and projection that stays balanced. Super fast neck that plays almost like an electric. Ebony fretboard and solid top for $300? You can't beat that. Great electronics with an accurate easy to use tuner and phaser. I gave it a 4 for quality because the craftsmanship is typical Epiphone, fake inlays, uneven fretboard stain, plastic nut and bridge, but what do you expect for $300. You can't find a better guitar than this for the price.
Comments about Epiphone AJ-220SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:
I just bought this guitar today. I was looking for a guitar that had a cutaway and was acoustic electric, and i found it. I first picked this guitar up and strummed it. It sounded awesome! This has a great tone. I thought that it had a better tone than most of the other guitars i played. The reason i did a 4.5 for quality was because the "e" on the pickguard was peeling a bit, but other than that, this guitar is excellent and i will use this a lot.
